Product Description
This authoritative and up-to-date atlas of Namibia is a milestone in atlas production in southern Africa. Beautifully produced and designed, and illustrated throughout with colour maps and breathtaking photographs, this atlas is meant both for the serious student and for the general reader and traveller. The team of authors has been contracted by the Ministry of Environment and Tourism. The chief author, John Mendelsohn, is a South African-trained scientist who works as a consultant in Windhoek. This is a work that will last for many years - it won't be replaced for decades - and contains a wealth of recent information rendered in graphic and cartographic form. It is comprehensive in its coverage: in addition to a series of topographical maps of the country, it deals with the climate, geology, fauna and flora, land ownership and uses, human demography, the economy and social services. The text is accessibly written and not jargon-laden, and the maps and photographs (many taken from satellites) are fascinating to look at. ... Read more

Chapters: Caprivi Strip. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 61. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Caprivi, sometimes called the Caprivi Strip (in German: Caprivizipfel), Caprivi Panhandle or the Okavango Strip and formally known as Itenge, is a narrow protrusion of Namibia eastwards about 450 km (280 miles), between Botswana on the south, Angola and Zambia to the north, and Okavango Region to the west. Caprivi is bordered by the Okavango, Kwando, Chobe and Zambezi rivers. Its largest settlement is the town of Katima Mulilo. The strip is administratively divided between the eastern Caprivi Region and the western Okavango Region. Inhabitants of the Caprivi Strip speak a number of African languages: most are in the Bantu family, although there is also at least one language in the northwest of the strip (against the Namibia/Angola border) which is a Khoisan language: Hukwe. The Bantu languages include Yeyi (or 'Yei' or 'Yeeyi'), Mbukushu, Gciriku (or 'Dciriku'), Fwe, Totela, and Subiya. Perhaps a majority in the Caprivi Strip, especially in the capital town of Katima Mulilo, speak Lozi as a lingua franca. Many also speak some English and Afrikaans. Village in the Caprivi Strip The area is rich in wildlife and has mineral resources. Of particular interest to the government of Namibia is that it gives access to the Zambezi River and thereby a potential trading route to Africa's East Coast. However, the vagaries of the river level, various rapids, the presence of Victoria Falls downstream and continued political uncertainty in the region make this use of the Caprivi Strip unlikely, although it may be used for ecotourism in the future. Within Namibia the Caprivi Strip provides significant habitat for the critically endangered Wild African Dog, Lycaon pictus. Product Description
Namibia, officially the Republic of Namibia is a country in Southern Africa whose western border is the Atlantic Ocean. It shares borders with Angola and Zambia to the north, Botswana and Zimbabwe to the east, and South Africa to the south and east. It gained independence from South Africa on 21 March 1990 following the Namibian War of Independence. Its capital and largest city is Windhoek. Namibia is a member state of the United Nations (UN), the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the African Union (AU), the Commonwealth of Nations and many other international organisations. It has been given many names: the land of contrasts, the land God made in anger, the ageless land. For many years it was known only as South West Africa, but it adopted the name Namibia, after the Namib Desert. It is the second least densely populated country in the world, after Mongolia. The dry lands of Namibia were inhabited since early times by Bushmen, Damara, Namaqua, and since about the 14th century AD, by immigrating Bantu who came with the Bantu expansion. It was visited by the British and Dutch missionaries during the late 18th century. ... Read more

Product Description
The dismantling of the apartheid regime in South Africa caused massive transformation in both geographical and economic terms, not only in this country but also in the region as a whole. As the post-apartheid government enters its second term, this captivating volume assesses its progress in unravelling the geography of apartheid, both in South Africa itself and in its relationships with other countries in Southern Africa and Africa. It also considers the ways in which South Africa, now that it is no longer a pariah state, has begun to position itself within the current global economy. Examining South Africa's land and agriculture, mining and minerals, manufacturing, tourism, corporate finance, the labour market and transport, the volume discusses the challenges of balancing growth and redistribution, the extent and nature of progress, change and relationships within the regional and global economy. A compelling investigation into the economics of South Africa's neighbouring states in relation to their natural resources, colonialism and inter-relationships with themselves and with South Africa leads to a focus on the region as a whole and its relations with the global economy. ... Product Description

This work analyzes the social and environmental impact of colonial conquest and pacification of Africa through a case study of the Angolan-Namibian borderlands. These areas were exposed to three different systems of colonial expansion: German, Portuguese, and British (South African). This study demonstrates the interactions between social and environmental factors, structures and processes and shows that colonial conquest needs to be acknowledged as a major problem.

It includes in-depth analysis of the late 19th to 20th century processes of social and environmental change at the village, household, and individual levels. It illustrates how refugees managed to restore a workable environment without massive outside aid and despite colonial exactions.

Product Description
This thesis describes small-scale farming in Northern Namibia and estimates the impacts of HIV/AIDS on these small-scale farmers. The aim of this study is to quantify the impacts on farm households that can serve as basis for potential policy interventions for mitigating those impacts. The first part of the thesis describes the results of Farm Economic Household Surveys. The second part analyzes the impacts of HIV/AIDS on agricultural production systems. It is the first time that household demographics data are combined with agricultural data to model the impacts of HIV/AIDS on small-scale farmers. The study uses household level data and regression analysis to estimate the effects of adult mortality and health-related reduced labor supply on farm output. Four storylines and a set of sub-scenarios are defined to estimate the impacts of HIV/AIDS. The storylines are composed of HIV-related illness and AIDS-related deaths of household members by gender and migration status in combination with average household education and age change assumptions. For the worst case scenario, losses of livestock and off-farm income were also applied. ... Read more
