Product Description
Namibia's Post-Apartheid Regional Institutions is an examination of the development of regional policy-making and organizational behavior of Namibia's regional institutions in their founding year, as they were established after independence from South Africa in 1990. The study emphasizes the importance of focusing on the microlevel dynamics and communications of public organizations in order to understand the intricacies of decentralization, in Namibia as in other parts of the world. The author shows clearly that a focus on the capacity-building activities of elected regional councils and parliaments can reveal important aspects of the strengthening of new democracies. Joshua Bernard Forrest is Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Vermont and an expert on state-building in sub-Saharan Africa. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Extreme Imperialism
Short, but very well written account of German exploitation and destruction of the Herero tribe of German Southwest Africa (today, Namibia)in the first decade of the 20th Century. One underlying theme carefully worked out is how racial prejudice influenced the conduct of the suppression.Kaiser Bill comes off very poorly in this matter. Had he not given the revolt his high level of attention, perhaps the suppression would have been much milder. ... Read more

Product Description
The Occupation of Namibia analyzes the historical factors that led to the initial occupation of Namibia by South Africa in 1915, and explores the diplomatic and legal arguments used to justify this occupation. The author offers a unique perspective on Namibian history that has been ignored by both apologists for South Africa as well as by critics of white minority rule. While most studies concentrate on whether the United Nations had the legal authority to assume responsibility over the mandate for Namibia, this book argues that there were British colonial regulations that took precedence over any claim by South Africa to possess the Namibian mandate independently of Britain or the U.N. This study documents how South Africa attempted to remove British influence from Namibia, and how Namibian history was falsified by South Africans to justify their rule over Namibia. This analysis promises to influence the nature of the negotiations that will occur between an independent Namibian government and the republic of South Africa over the future status of Walvis Bay, Namibia's primary port, which remains under South African occupation. ... Product Description
The struggle for Namibia's independence from the regional perspective of southern Africa over a period of 45 years from 1945 to 1990 is the subject of this detailed study, which is based on extensive research in the region. This regional focus on Namibia's decolonization complements existing approaches to the study of Namibia's decolonization, which emphasize either the internal dynamics of occupation, resistance and collaboration inside the country, or the international diplomatic efforts as a result of Namibia's unique position in United Nations diplomacy. The work throws light on issues such as the relationship between Namibian nationalist movements and other liberation movements of southern Africa in the light of Soviet-Chinese rivalry in the 1960s. It also analyzes the role of independent southern African states in Namibia's search for independence. In particular, it examines frontline state diplomacy during the negotiations and subsequent implementation of Security Council resolution 435 of 1978.Finally, the study discusses the regional war between Angola and South Africa in the light of the South African "Total National Strategy", Cuban internationalism, the changing policies of the Soviet Union and the American policy of "linkage" in the 1980s, which set the conditions for completing Namibia's decolonization during the final years of the Cold War. ... Product Description

The 1904 war that broke out in present day Namibia after the Herero tribe rose against an oppressive colonial regime—and the German army’s brutal suppression of that uprising—are the focus of this collection of essays. Exploring the annihilation of both the Herero and Nama people, this selection from prominent researchers of German imperialism considers many aspects of the war and shows how racism, concentration camps, and genocide in the German colony foreshadow Hitler’s Third Reich war crimes.

Product Description
At the beginning of 1977, several members of the United Nations (UN) Security Council prepared a joint diplomatic initiative to resolve the deadlock over South Africa's illegal occupation of Namibia. In this book, Hans-Joachim Vergau, a key participant in the ensuing negotiations, analyses the multifaceted political and diplomatic developments - as well as dramatic setbacks - that followed the initiative."This book provides a precise view of the long diplomatic struggle to achieve Namibia's independence through UN activities from the perspective of one of Germany's most influential diplomats. Hans-Joachim Vergau's commitment to the cause of independence bridged dangerous periods, including those during which Western powers and even his superiors did not apply the necessary pressure on South Africa. They prevaricated, until the apartheid regime started to crumble." Prof. Dr. Helmut Bley, University of Hannover ... Read more

Product Description
This study describes the manner in which the Herero of Namibia struggled to maintain control of their own freedom in the face of advancing German colonial control. It illustrates how the Herero-German war destroyed Herero society, but it re-emerged and adapted to colonialism. The study ends in 1923 when the death and funeral of Samuel Maharero - first paramount of the Herero and then resistance leader - was the catalyst that brought the disparate groups of Herero together to establish a single unitary Herero identity. ...
