Product Description

Ancient Wisdom, Modern Science is a collection of essays examining the experiences of Native American tribally controlled colleges and universities working to “Indianize” their math and science curricula. Inspired by the writings of the late Vine Deloria and other Indian scholars, tribal college faculty and key administrators are attempting to take control of the science curriculum and create courses and entire degree programs that link Native and Western ways of knowing. With growing confidence, colleges are validating traditional tribal knowledge and exploring scientific concepts from a Native perspective.

From the supplier: The National Native American Teleteaching Network is a network that links secondary schools and community colleges on American Indian Reservations. The network is federally funded and not only links students with teachers, it provides training opportunities for student teachers that they would not normally have. In some cases students are able to have access to courses taught several states away. The network has also been used to develop a waste management degree program over several sites. The network uses two telephone lines, one for transmission of data and one for teleconferencing. Each site has an At & T Overview scanner to allow transmission and correction of homework and other assignments. Each site also has a color printer, a 4800- baud modem and a AT&T 286 based computer.

From the author: Geographers have played an important role in the great debate over the size of Indian populations in the Americas at the time of European arrival. Carl Sauer was a major influence on his graduate students, on historical demographers at the University of California, Berkeley, and on a younger generation of historical geographers. Even in the face of more conservative estimates by other scholars, Sauer and his students and other associates have consistently argued for large numbers of Indians. This reflects, in part, Sauer's emphasis on examining evidence for numbers in geographical context: environment, food production, and settlement number, size, and location. Keywords: geographical context, historical demography, Native Americans, Carl Sauer.

Excerpt: Santa Rosa Junior College ("SRJC") is a community college located in the city of Santa Rosa in Sonoma County, California. Founded in 1918, it is the tenth oldest community college in the state. Santa Rosa Junior College was modeled as a "junior" version of nearby University of California at Berkeley. It was intended to be a feeder school for the U.C. system, and still is to this day, with a special program designed for the direct transfer of students to various campuses in the U.C. system upon the completion of certain prerequisites. It has a remarkable number of accomplished professors for a community college, and is consistently ranked as one of the top community colleges in the nation. The school also has an unusually large grant and scholarship system that is the legacy of the Doyle family, resulting in one of the largest trusts for any community college in the nation. SRJC is located 52 miles north of San Francisco and has a beautiful and traditional-style 100-acre (0.40 km) campus with ivy-covered brick buildings on a backdrop of rolling green lawns, dotted with ancient oak trees, redwoods, flower gardens, and manicured lawns in a park like setting in the heart of Santa Rosa, California. In addition to its state-of-the art classroom facilities, laboratories and conference winning athletic programs, the campus houses a Planetarium, an Art Gallery, Summer Repertory Theater, and the Jesse Peter Native American Museum. SRJC began offering evening classes in Petaluma in 1964, and in the early 1970s held classes in leased spaces throughout the city. In 1985, the Board of Trustees purchased a 40-acre (160,000 m) site in east Petaluma, and in 1995 the first phase of construction of a Petaluma Center was completed. The Petaluma Center officiall... Product Description
"Go one day by railroad, one day by horse and buggy, a third on horseback, a day on foot, and then on all fours until you climb a tree. And when you fall out, you'll be in Rabun County."

In Mountain Legacy, these are the directions that guide the reader to the formerly isolated, poverty-stricken valley of the Appalachian Highlands of north Georgia, where, one hundred years ago, a man founded an 1800-acre farm school, and students could get an education by combining poetry with plowing, mathematics with milking, and psychology with sorghum syrup making.

Part One of this nonfiction book (384p.), with bibliographical references and index, tells the story of Andrew Ritchie's struggles to get an education, himself, and then to return to the valley to build Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School, despite almost insurmountable odds.

Part Two addresses a unique time period in the school's history, the junior college years of the Great depression and World War II, andthe personal stories of those students, who later became advisers topresidents, educators, scientists, physicians, mathematicians in theearly space program, and heroes of the Bataan Death March and theDoolittle Raid over Tokyo.

Part Three shows the changes after WWII, the Foxfire years, and thevisions for the future of a unique school, where dreams of aneducation and the escape from poverty can still come true. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS THE THINKING BLACK WOMAN'S BIBLE!
Gayle Pemberton is, simply, BRILLIANT.This collection of essays from an important intellectual spoke to the core of my triumphant being.I love the angst and the jubilation that peppered her road to self-actualization;I love the matter-of-fact way in which she deals with everyday racism andignorance; her essay on "triple consciousness" is breathtaking. It is a must read; more than that: it is a must read again, and again, andAGAIN AND AGAIN. . .

5-0 out of 5 stars Wry, witty, subtle, mordant essays
This book is terrific!A moving, funny, insightful, challenging memoir of growing up black, female, and brainy in the 50's, 60's, 70's and beyond. The title essay, in which Pemberton's father integrates a fleabag hotel, isunforgettable.I also loved "Antidisestablishmentarianism,"about watching the Mousketeers on TV as a young girl, under the eye of atruly amazing grandmother.Pemberton was included in Philip Lopate'santhology, "The Art of the Personal Essay"-- with good reason. She's outstanding. ... Read more

The offices of ICC are located on Highway K, near the tribe's business district, on the Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe Reservation near Hayward. Managing Editor and Indian Country Communications Chief Executive Officer Paul DeMain (Ojibwe/Oneida) started the newspaper after returning to the Lac Courte Oreille area from Madison, Wisconsin, where he worked as Indian Affairs Advisor for Wisconsin governor Tony Earl. DeMain had previously worked for the tribe in the capacity of a public information officer from 1978 to 1982 and published the tribe's publication, The LCO Journal American.
