5-0 out of 5 stars spiritual leadership
Cool book for a hot topic... what I loved about this book was the freedom I felt to explore the sweat lodge experience from my own cultural perspective. The author understands the true spiritual message of all pathways to God, which is about the universality of the holy spirit... that the sweat lodge experience is not just for native americans; it is a true spiritual means and so it transcends any one pathway, as all true spiritual means do. Astutely, the author used the words of native american shamans to make that point.

5-0 out of 5 stars Such interesting facts and information on Native American customs
I am ashamed to say that I have known very little about Native American customs and beliefs. That has all changed with Irene McGarvie's book which goes far beyond how to build a sweat lodge - it's symbolism and effects.Instead I get to find out about core beliefs, from health, spirituality, religious practices and even the fact that homosexuals and transsexuals were considered especailly gifted as "they were thought to be people who had two souls in one body and could therefore represent both sexes."Perhaps if we in modern, Western America could take to heart the knowledge and understanding of our world that Native Americans had and have, we would all be far better off.Thank you Ms. McGarvie for bringing this knowledge to light in an easy to read and fascinating book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect
The book showed up quickly and in perfect shape. A must read book that has easy to follow instructions on how to build your own sweat lodge.

5-0 out of 5 stars the sweat lodge is for everyone
I found this book very informative. Having never taken part in a Sweat Lodge before and wondering if I could sit in a small, hot, crowded space with a sweaty bunch of strangers??? Yes! with the help from this book, I now understand, 1. the mystery surrounding the sweatlodge, and 2, the etiquette of the sweat lodge, with the fear of the unknown removed, I now feel comfortable and excited about particapating in a Sweat Lodge, I have and idea of what to expect and with out the fear the possiblities are possible. The book also gave me a insight into the history of the Sweat Lodge around the world and the use of Native American imagery. I also came to understand that it is not just about crawling into the lodge, but the active part of participating in the gathering of materials and the construction and blessing of the lodge which makes the experince so much more powerful.

I want to thank Ms McGavie for removing the blanket of mystery surrounding the Sweat Lodge for the everyday person, so we can all enjoy the experince and understand the need to preserve this wonderful tool from our Native American brothers. This book has openned up the possiblities of participating in a Sweat Lodge for me with understanding and loving guidance.

4-0 out of 5 stars Really Enjoyed
This is a fun and informative read. My husband has pondered the building of a sweat lodge and now has the information tools to finally do it! I particularly enjoyed learning of the evolution of sweat baths of different countries and cultures through the ages. Ms. McGarvie's lighthearted spattering throughout, illustrating personal experiences with the various styles of the "sweat", makes this book especially enjoyable. I will recommend it to many friends. ... Read more
