3.5: grim, gripping enough, flawed, with excellent narration
"Hard Truth" is certainly a grim tale, with violence and a dark theme running throughout. Even one of the two main females, the guest character Heath Jarrod, struggles with her disability as a secondary thread. That thread, which allows for contemplation about her specific problems and the treatment of similarly afflicted people, at least also provides an opportunity for some personal gain and aid to others in the midst of the grimness.

The darkness of the story, with its degradation of children, bothered me less than I expected and certainly less than many reviewers. Perhaps it was the quality of the narration by Barbara Rosenblat, which was smooth and balanced, or perhaps because the details were not over the top for me. The pace was reasonable, with some sluggishness headed toward the half-way mark.

The main interaction with the perp goes on for an unusually extended stretch compared to a typical detective novel or thriller, which would have more scene changes and back and forth. I guessed the perp fairly early, although without certainty enough to take the edge off.

Two negatives: I'm a big fan of strong, talented women, but there aren't really any good-guy men in this one. I suppose Anna's husband a thousand miles away is probably a good one, safely out of the way this time. The small religious "family" is run by scum, and the author wastes no chances to get her digs in about fundamentalists (easy, somewhat tedious, pickings with characters like these) and more negative commentary about religion than necessary.

Serial killers are depraved!Beware!
Nevada Barr is my kind of writer.Strong, secular, humanist, nature-loving and a woman.I can't understand the murderers she writes about.But, I know they exist.I've had just enough darkness in my life to identify with her protagonist.When Anna Pigeon rights the wrong, I am vindicated.But, like Anna, I know too much to live a traditional life, now.Yes, most of her other Anna Pigeon mysteries have less painful situations.So, start with them, experience the National Parks and their beauty.I take comfort thinking there are rangers and police who, like Nevada Barr, keep their sanity when very bad things happen.

Uncomfortable but well written mystery
I agree with other reviewers that this is the darkest and most chilling installment in the series so far.It's not the sort of topic I choose to read about and I, too, noticed the relative lack of engagement with the natural park setting that drew me to this series in the first place.Neither is there much in terms of further developing the Anna Pigeon character. But that said, as far as a mystery story goes, this one was well done--enough so to give me a nightmare.

Chilling Graphic Exciting
This was my first Nevada Barr book. This book only averaged a 3 star from the readers but I think it was a very exciting read. The villian is a real villian and the heroes are true heros. Very graphic not for the faint of heart but definitely a thriller.

good story but chilling...
I've always loved the spunky Anna and she is great in this book as always. It's the plot itself that I found chilling. Children being abducted and molested, a cult of ex-mormons, all taking place in the remote Rocky Mountains...well, you get the picture. You are on the edge of your seat the whole book. It's certainly not a cozy series any longer but still a very good series.

The author is a great author, but I'm getting a little spooked by the plots. I think I liked her earlier books better when you could expect the men to always be the bad guys! ... Read more

no key
The good news is that this book is extremely lavishly illustrated with color photos, and surprisingly cheap for something so well produced.

The main thing I don't like about it is that there is absolutely no key, or any other method for identifying an unknown plant. To be able to use this book successfully, you must be able to look at a plant and know enough to guess its family from among the 45 families of flowering plants that are listed in alphabetical order. If you don't know a monocot from a dicot, or an aster from a wild rose, then you're out of luck. Most people can probably learn to identify most members of the buckwheat family fairly easily, but how many will be able to place its atypical members like bistort and mountain sorrel? This book also will not help you to learn how to place plants in their families, except by osmosis. For example, the introduction to the orchid family doesn't mention the characteristics that are most helpful in placing a plant in that family: parallel-veined leaves and flowers with bilateral symmetry. A cross-shaped stigma helps to place a flower in the evening primrose family, but you won't find that out from this book.

For this reason, I would suggest that most people who aren't already expert botanists buy the Laws Field Guide to the Sierra Nevada instead of this book. The Laws book has a very easy to use key. Horn's book might be more useful if you want more detailed information after having already keyed the plant out using Laws.

The other thing I don't like about this book is that it relies completely on photos rather than diagrams. That works sometimes, but other times it adds to the difficulty of identifying the flower. For example, one of the most helpful clues in identifying a flower is usually how many petals it has, but many of the photos show a large plant that has tiny flowers, so you can't make them out. I find the line diagrams in Laws much clearer.

Handy guide with plentiful photos
I took this wildflower guide with me to Yosemite and Tahoe areas, and found it helpful. The photos are clear and colorful. The species are grouped by family (Rose Family, Milkweed Family, etc.) and scientific names are shown beside the common names. A typical species description is about one-third of a page, straightforwardly written, sometimes with a paragraph on "similar species" to help you distinguish among them. The introduction very briefly covers the Sierra's geology, plant distribution (zones), habitats, and how to use the book. The appendices cover: Identifying Serra Nevada Conifers (illustrated, plus a Simple Key); Terms You Should Know (botany basics); Glossary; General References; Index. Because of the glossy paper, this book is fairly heavy for its size (214 pages) so it may not be feasible to take on long hikes where packweight could be a factor.

Great Story, easy read, could not put it down.
This book was very good. A must read for all those who dream of freedom that we will never have again. Yes there were hardships, but no one to tell us that we could only build a certain way or someone to come and take your children if you had too many. The only one who will ever be able to own this much land again ....the Government! How sad. Read this awesome book!

Fantastic reading
This book is a real page turner. Once I started reading it I could not put it down. It was satisfying from beginning to end and I did not want it to end. I highly recommend it.

Interesting read...
The struggles and hardships survived by this family should make us think twice about whining when we've had a bad day at the office, the dog throws up on the carpet, there's a traffic jam on the way home, the cable guy is four hours late, or any of the other happenings we find annoying in our modern lives.(how about that three-day trip to town and back?)As an animal lover, I skimmed over the semi-graphic descriptions of trapping animals.Other than that, an enthralling read.

A wonderful book!
I was turned on to this book by the authors great nephew. This woman's tale of hardship, perseverance and determination is one to be admired by all. An easy read and a wonderful adventure.
