Product Description
"With Kinseyesque diligence [Moffatt] catalogues the sexual habits and fantasies of his students. . . . His book vibrates with quirky authenticity." --New York Times Book Review "Useful for understanding the student experience . . . throughout the United States. . . . Beautifully written, carefully researched . . . a classic."--John Thelin, Educational Studies "Michael Moffatt is a multitalented, multidisciplinary scholar . . . who writes without a trace of gobbledygook. He deserves a wide following." --Rupert Wilkinson, Journal of American Studies "One of the most thoughtfully crafted case studies of undergraduate culture . . . ever written . . . a book every professor should read." --Paul J. Baker, Academe Coming of Age is about college as students really know it and--often--love it. To write this remarkable account, Michael Moffatt did what anthropologists usually do in more distant cultures: he lived among the natives. His findings are sometimes disturbing, potentially controversial, but somehow very believable. Coming of Age is a vivid slice of life of what Moffatt saw and heard in the dorms of a typical state university, Rutgers, in the 1980s. It is full of student voices: naive and worldy-wise, vulgar and polite, cynical, humorous, and sometimes even idealistic. But it is also about American culture more generally: individualism, friendship, community, bureaucracy, diversity, race, sex, gender, intellect, work, and play.As an example of an ethnography written about an anthropologist's own culture, this book is an uncommon one. As a new and revealing perspective on the much-studied American college student, it is unique. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Incredible Book
Most books on "college kids" are nothing but anti-youth statistical messes.Moffat's generous phenomenological approach to the subject and refusal to make any broad generalizations make this book a truly amazing document. His analysis of "friendliness" as the dominant trope in American society, demonstrated in the micro-society of the dorm, is superb, as are his eye-opening conclusions about the trends that govern undergraduate sexuality.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Anthropological Study of University Students
The author is a faculty member in the Anthropology department at Rutgers University who decided to do a study of the students in traditional immersion fashion. To do this, he joined the incoming freshman class as an older student returning to school and lived in the dorm. The resulting book is a fascinating read, particularly for someone who was actually entering college around the same time as Moffatt's study.Moffatt covers the group dynamics, the forming and shifting of groups, and many of the aspects of college life.

5-0 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down!
One of the few college texts I actually READ. Required for a freshman anthropology class (this is almost 8 years ago now), I was thrilled by every word in this book...Easy to read, interesting, entertaining...Imistakenly loaned it to someone who never gave it back and have regrettedit ever since.A must read for anyone interested in a look at collegeculture through the eyes of someone doing it again, 20 years aftergraduation. ... Product Description
Grand Manan Island, a 200-year old fishing village in the Bay of Fundy, has been overwhelmed by globalization, technology, and changing government policies. Changes on the island call into question the myth of the rural idyll and point to an urgent need for reconsideration of urban-rural divides. In less than a decade, the island community has faced the degradation of the wild fishery and rapid growth of aquaculture, an increasing presence of multinational corporations, new federal initiatives with respect to aboriginal policies, and widespread social dysfunction.Joan Marshall uses over twelve years of intensive ethnographic research to chart the nature and pace of social and cultural change on Grand Manan, showing how it relates to globalization and environmental degradation, as well as to a confluence of outside sources. The personal stories of the Grand Manan people bring to life their local struggles and show how their community, like other rural and fishing communities across Canada, is being inexorably changed by forces outside their control. ... Product Description
Off Limits examines a group of Rutgers artists who came together on the Rutgers University, New Brunswick, campus during the 1950's and revolutionized art practices and pedagogy. This groundbreaking book features more than 140 illustrations as well as interviews with Allan Kaprow, Roy Lichtenstein, Lucas Samaras, George Segal, Robert Whitman, and Geoffrey Hendricks.Essays are by Simon Anderson, Joseph Jacobs, Jackson Lears, Joan Marter, and Kristine Stiles. Also included is "Project in Multiple Dimensions," a previously unpublished statement by Kaprow, Robert Watts, and George Brecht about their commitment to art and technology, and an uncanny prediction about the future of art.

Rutgers was clearly the place to be for experimental artists during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Allan Kaprow's first Happening, Roy Lichtenstein's first Pop paintings, George Segal's earliest figurative tableaux, and photo-Fluxus events and Conceptual Art by Robert Watts and George Brecht all were made or took place on or near the Rutgers campus.Simultaneously, Lucas Samaras was painting with smoke on aluminum foil and embedding razor blades in boards, and Robert Whitman was making installations incorporating film projections, the forerunner of video installation. This innovative group boldly rejected the then-fashionable Abstract Expressionism and created startling new artforms that still prevail at the end of the century. ... This discography documents the full range of Brunswick label recordings through 1931, when the American Record Corporation purchased the label. The data includes affiliated or subsidiary labels such as Vocalion and Melotone. Brunswick recorded a wide variety of music in both New York City and in a variety of regional locations within and outside of the United States. This collection of material provides a unique cross-section of the music and musicians of the time. Much of the information derives from surviving company files and from issued recordings. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing and comprehensive
I own this volume, as well as the Volume 3, Chicago and Regional volume and despite the frustration at the date of 1931 to end the project (which is stupid), kit's a wonderful, surprisingly complete book. Many of the original card files are missing and Ross Laird had to reconstruct the files, and he did a wonderful job.

I'm very happy to have this important series of books, but it's priced very expensively. ... Read more

Product Description
Life was not easy for Jamelie during her early years in Southern Lebanon. The role of young females was limited to household chores with education available to very few, although Jamelie struggled to learn at every opportunity.

Later, as the sixteen-year old bride of a man twelve years her senior, young Jamelie leaves Lebanon for a new life in the United States. Although sad to leave her family, Jamelie embarks with high expectations of a better life for her and her new family.

Once in the United States, however, she quickly realizes that the streets are not paved in gold as she tries to settle into a cold, barren attic apartment in a working class city in New Jersey.

JAMELIE, JAMELIE shows the determined optimism of a young immigrant woman, illiterate and uneducated, as she attempts to survive in a strange land. Within almost as many years, five children are born to Jamelie and just when the family seems to be managing financially, her husband becomes ill and dies. As a young widow Jamelie must now take complete charge of her family - physically, mentally and financially.

The book is filled with descriptions of life in New Brunswick, New Jersey, as Jamelie struggles to raise her five children in an environment that will make them successful in life. While instilling in her children a love of God, self and others, she educates herself and advances in her work, eventually becoming Johnson & Johnson’s Mother of the Year.

But JAMELIE, JAMELIE is not simply the story of one woman’s struggle to survive; it is the story of one woman’s love of life! Throughout the book, Jamelie’s optimism and sense of humor has the reader laughing out loud at some of her antics.

Jamelie’s legacy is seen in the last section of the book where her five children and fifteen grandchildren, in personal essays, recall their own unique experiences with this incredible woman. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes you appreciate what you have!
Okay, I'm the author's son, but I wouldn't be writing these words were I not truly convinced that this is a great story. They don't make women like my grandmother anymore. She never knew the meaning of the word "sacrifice".My mother's description of my grandmother's harrowing boat trip from Lebanon to her new home in the United States will make even the most hardnosed cynics quiver. And her tending to my debilitated grandfather (due to a stroke) while raising my mother and her brothers and sisters (5 in all!) in a closet-sized attic apartment and working double shifts at a tape company truly makes me appreciate everything I have.Yes, this story has been told before, but this one has a fresh point of view unlike anything else I have read previously. My mother has not only written a chronicle of our family's history, but a truly endearing story of one woman's struggle in the face of unfathomable obstacles - and all for the sake of being able to live in America. ...
