Product Description
University communities have the potential to serve as models in the development and application of sustainability principles and practices, not only by what they teach and study, but also by how they operate facilities and engage with off-campus partners. With the oldest endowed campus-wide sustainability program in the country, established in 1997, the University of New Hampshire has become a leader in advancing a campus culture of sustainability. The UNH experience provides a unique window into the development of a new and integrated approach to teaching, learning, research, and operations. It is also a valuable guide for other institutions that aim to enhance the quality of campus life while reducing their environmental footprint. The book's organization along four functional domains (curriculum, operations, research, and engagement) allows faculty, staff, students, and managers to focus on sections of particular relevance to their university roles. Each chapter develops standards of best practices and presents interesting case studies to humanize the larger effort. ... Read more

Product Description
In this lively interdisciplinary blend of history, education, and material culture, Jennifer J. Popiel examines ideological and cultural shifts in French child rearing and maternity from pre-Revolutionary France to 1833. She shows how ideals promoted in Rousseau's educational treatise Emile (1762) anchored women more firmly in private life by emphasizing their critical role in their children's early education and development. Emile marked the beginning of a widespread shift toward domestic nurturing, with an emphasis on self-control, autonomy, and gender difference. This "domestic revolution" not only drove new genres of literature, clothing styles, and toys, but as Popiel persuasively argues, it also set the stage for greater civic participation of women and children. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Accessible reading even for the non-historian
Jennifer Popiel's book, Rousseau's Daughters: Domesticity, Education, and Autonomy in Modern France, received the David Pinkney Prize at the 2009 meeting of the Society for French Historical Studies. The Society awards the prize annually to the best book in French history by a North American scholar. It is the highest distinction that French historians can offer their colleagues in North America.

I am not an expert on French history. I'm not an expert on the history of women's roles in society. I am, however, interested in learning more about women's roles in society and in the family, and this book definitely gave me new insight and a broader perspective, and turned upside-down several preconceived notions I had about the "traditional role of the wife and mother."

I wish everyone who participates in debates over "the mommy wars," the traditional role of women, the place of stay-at-home moms versus those who work outside the home, and anyone else who thinks he or she is an expert on what that place should be, would read Popiel's book and gain a much deeper insight into why many of our preconceived, 20th-century, American ideas about what women should be like are based on very recent history.

I would probably give this book five stars were I an academic with a more complete knowledge of the nuances and background it would take to fully appreciate the research presented in this book. As it is, I'd give it four and a half stars for the average reader. The first chapter, while important in its insights, is academic and perhaps a tad dense for the non-French history buff, but it is still very interesting even without such a background of knowledge. The remaining chapters are very interesting, engaging, and easy to read even for a layperson such as myself.

I highly recommend this award-winning book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars History and Atmosphere Nicely Combined
I happen to be a Dartmouth grad (1934) but I believe this compilation will convey to any interested reader more than just the history of this venerable Ivy League institution. Itwill also acquaint him/her with thedistinct flavor of this institution which is so "miraculouslybuilded" in the hearts of all who have studied there, or even visitedthe campus. (This title is from a song that isa favorite of the gleeclub). Why do I believe this? Well, the editors included just aboutevery essay, song and poem that we alums best recall, plus many others with which I at least was not familiar. As am example, if you buy the book, besure to read "My Dog Likes ItHere" by Corey Ford. That alonewill give you a picture of what makesDartmouth and Hanover tick.AndPresident Eisenhower's widely quoted address to the college's commencementexercises about burning the books isincluded to give readers a look at how the outside world views theacademic side of college life. I couldgo on citing the verycomplete contents of this fascinating compilation, but perhaps I've said enough to convey my enthusiasm. All I can suggest isthat I am convinced that a perusal of them will, I am sure, be well worthyour time and effort. ... Read more

Product Description

James Freedman, the fifteenth president of Dartmouth College, began life in a struggling middle-class Jewish family in a provincial industrial New Hampshire town. By the time of his death from cancer in March 2006, he was one of the most celebrated educational leaders of his generation, perhaps of the twentieth century. Finding the Words is Freedman's account of the first twenty-seven years of this astonishing trajectory in a life made difficult by depression, but sustained throughout by a love of books and learning, a life that would transform the culture of American higher education.

His mother's fierce and bruising ambition instilled in him an overwhelming drive to leave his mark upon the world. His father, a revered high-school English teacher who was timid outside the classroom, introduced him to the rich world of literature--and also passed on to him his doubts and insecurities. Freedman retraces his intellectual formation as a student, educator, scholar, and leader, from his early?obsession with book collecting through his undergraduate years at Harvard and his professional training at Yale Law School. This same passion for language and ideas defined Freedman's leadership at Dartmouth, where he deftly countered lingering anti-Semitism, fought entrenched interests to open the way for women and minorities, reformed and revitalized the curriculum, and boldly reconceived the school's campus.

This moving and inspiring book vividly depicts the formative years of a man nourished by lifelong learning, whose rise from humble beginnings to heights of achievement will serve as a model for generations to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Enjoyable Read
This book was a delight to read...engaging and whimsical.Mr. Hart does a very good job providing the reader with an enjoyable autobiography. His political and religious views are conservative, and this book is a chronicle of how those views clashed with the Liberal Establishment of Dartmouth College.

For conservatives, Mr. Hart is like an undiscovered friend. In all honesty, though, even Liberals should find that this book is worth reading...even if you find yourself on the wrong side of Mr. Hart's philosophical fence. ... Read more

Product Description

As one of the most prestigious high schools in the nation, St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire, has long been the exclusive domain of America's wealthiest sons. But times have changed. Today, a new elite of boys and girls is being molded at St. Paul's, one that reflects the hope of openness but also the persistence of inequality.

In Privilege, Shamus Khan returns to his alma mater to provide an inside look at an institution that has been the private realm of the elite for the past 150 years. He shows that St. Paul's students continue to learn what they always have--how to embody privilege. Yet, while students once leveraged the trappings of upper-class entitlement, family connections, and high culture, current St. Paul's students learn to succeed in a more diverse environment. To be the future leaders of a more democratic world, they must be at ease with everything from highbrow art to everyday life--from Beowulf to Jaws--and view hierarchies as ladders to scale. Through deft portrayals of the relationships among students, faculty, and staff, Khan shows how members of the new elite face the opening of society while still preserving the advantages that allow them to rule.

5-0 out of 5 stars Uncrossing Customs
This selection of essays should be read by the American College student body across the U.S.The essays shed a light to the level of maturity the "typical" American college student possesses and demonstrates more than they illuminate facets of other cultures.I found myself stunned by the level of ignorance and apathy demonstrated by the "average" American student in the respective stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awakening at Dartmouth
Very engaging reading about foreign students lives prior to their education here. It's a revealing look at what they brought with them in life experience compared to what they saw in the average American student. They contend with the clash between the beliefs and values of theirupbringing and the shallow nature of the sheltered American student.Avery well written, thoughful response to the blending of their priorexperience, their expectations of study in the U.S. and the self discoverythat results.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful look at American and Ivy Culture.
Enlighteningly refreshing look at American and specifically Ivy Legue culture. International students reflect on their lives abroad and their experiences in Dartmouth College and the surrounding New England community. The students and alumni that have contributed their short autobiographiesto this compilation contemplate their diverse backgrounds and grapple withthe American culture, to which they are compelled. Some of the stories arehilarious. Some are heartbreaking. But all are profound. The students takegood aim at social and philosophical questions imposed by their newcommunity and search for their identities in a place that canonizesmonotony and conformity. This book can not be put down until it's finished. ... Read more
