Early in 1870 a New York Times article on Santa Fe noted that the city was "so much unlike anything in America that one feels a stranger in a strange land." New Mexico's Hispanic culture often clashed with what outsiders considered to be American. Public schooling in New Mexico became one means of transforming Hispanos into Americans.

Hispanos themselves welcomed the opportunity to educate their children, although they wished to do so in ways that made sense within their own community and cultural patterns. From the earliest years of the Territory through the 1930s, both Hispanos and Anglos sought to provide equal educational opportunities while preserving aspects of Hispanic culture. These efforts, though not always successful, made New Mexico an intriguing exception among Southwestern states in educating Hispanics.

It is thought best that I should give, in connection with the catalogue of collections made by the party under my charge in 1880-'81, a brief statement in relation to the collections described in the catalogues, and the information obtained in regard to the Pueblo tribes.

Our explorations during the field season of 1880 and 1881 were restricted to the Pueblo tribes located along the Rio Grande and its tributaries in New Mexico. The chief object in view was to secure as soon as possible all the ethnological and archaeological data obtainable before it should be lost to science by the influx of civilized population which is being rapidly thrown into this region by the extension of railroads into and through it. Not only are the architectural remains being rapidly destroyed and archaeological specimens collected and carried away by travelers, excursionists, and curiosity hunters, but the ancient habits and customs of these tribes are rapidly giving way and falling into disuse before the influence of eastern civilization.

Our party, consisting, besides myself, of Mr. Galbraith, archaeologist, Mr. Morancy, assistant, and Mr. J. K. Hillers, photographer, proceeded to Santa Fe, N. Mex., where an outfit was secured for the season's work. From here we proceeded to Taos, one of the most extensive pueblos in the Rio Grande region. This village is situated on the Rio Taos a few miles from the Rio Grande, and just under the shadow of the Taos Mountains. It comprises two large sections, one on each side of the Rio Taos. These are compactly built and each six stories high. The industrial pursuits of these Indians are principally pastoral and agricultural, they having a good market for their products in the Mexican village of Fernandez de Taos, containing a population of about 4,000 Mexicans and eastern people.

The party spent several days here making investigations and collections. The collection made was small but quite varied and novel, though few of the articles obtained were of their own manufacture.

Quite a number of stone implements were secured, among which were some stone knives, pipes, a number of rude stone axes and hammers, arrow smoothers, &c. The pottery obtained here is chiefly of the common type and resembles that from San Juan, from whence in all probability it was received by exchange and barter. Earthenware, so far as I can learn, is not now made in Taos, except by a few families where a Taos Indian has married a woman from San Juan or some other tribe where the manufacture of pottery is carried on. If this industry was ever, practiced by the Taos Indians it must have been at a remote period; in fact there seems to be no tradition of it now among them.

Since UNM’s early days its leaders have wanted the state’s flagship university to be a distinctly New Mexican place, what one writer called a “pueblo on the mesa.” Now Van Dorn Hooker, who served for many years as the university architect, has written a history of the architecture and planning of this beautiful campus.

UNM’s third president, William George Tight, fell in love with New Mexico in the late nineteenth century. His visionary appreciation of the creative genius of Hispanic and Pueblo architects, artists, and craftsmen led him to hire an architect to remodel UNM’s first building along the lines of the mission churches that dominate New Mexico’s Indian pueblos. This decision set the tone. In the mid twentieth century many UNM buildings were constructed in the Pueblo style, some of them designed by John Gaw Meem, the greatest practitioner of Pueblo-style architecture.

Hooker’s account will appeal to anyone who has ever studied, taught, or worked at UNM. But its significance goes far beyond nostalgia. New Mexico was still a territory when the university was founded. And because the founding of UNM coincided with the arrival of the railroad in New Mexico, the growth of the university coincides with Albuquerque’s transition from small town to city as well as with the territory’s attainment of statehood and the changes it has experienced in the course of the twentieth century. Lacks content, too many mistakes
I got this hoping to have a comprehensive guide on the NMTA.The explanations could have been much more effective by giving concrete examples or, especially, the substance of what we are required to know for this exam.Instead, the standards were laid out in more layman's terms.For example, if the standard says that we are to understand child development, then she explains why it is important.This explanation did not, therefore, prepare me for the test questions about Piaget's philosophy or Bloom's taxonomy.The preparation guide lacks adequate content.Since there isn't another guide out there, this is better than nothing.I think it'd be great to have a revised edition that fills in the holes.Also, there are quite a few typos.One - towards the end of the guide - even has the explanation of the standard in the wrong place.Then it is repeated in another section.(Basically, the editor missed a lot...)If you get this book, be prepared to look to other resources to fill in the holes...
