3-0 out of 5 stars Pueblos, Spaniards, and the Kingdom of New Mexico
Definitely an engaging work. I wanted to read this book because I was researching my family history. The Paso del Norte names I was looking for were not there, but the information on the conquest and re-conquest of New Mexico certainly made clear the events and it's people. I felt it was treated equally given the Indian-Spanish wars. Alicia. A descendent of Paso del Norte families.

5-0 out of 5 stars knowledge of situations involving the players
This book is obviously written by a person very knowledgable about the Spanish colonial times in New Mexico. It is easy to read. It shows how all of the people groups survived resource poor New Mexico.

3-0 out of 5 stars Rehash of outdated Research
I had Dr. Kessel in a 300 level History of New Mexico class back in 1986 and this book was a bit of a disappointment compared to the class. The book is a thin summary of Colonial New Mexico History from 1598 to the resettlement in the 1690's.There is no new primary research just a re-hash of older circa pre-1950's historical interpretations and the author's older material.Dr. Kessel claims to be balanced but this book is heavily biased in favor of the Pueblo Indians and a strong Black Legend taint.Dr.Kessel characterizes the Spaniards in the tired old stereotypes and the Pueblo Indians positively despite some despicable behavior by somelike Esteban Clemente (page 101).When a Spaniard does something negative he is cast as a villain and when a Pueblo Indian does the same deed he is cast positively. When a Spaniard performs an apparent good deed it is cast as though there are always bad, hidden motives. Also, when the action is between Church and State/colonists he unfailingly excuses the Priests/friars and casts the colonists as villains.I hope Dr. Kessel conducts some original research with a more temperate attitude before writing about his subject again.Example of rhetoric used:when Spaniards conduct negative activities they are described as "henchmen" (page 67, 101) and when a Pueblo Indian conducts negative activities he is portrayed as caught in a "dilemma". There are so few books on this topic it is ashamed that Dr. Kessel lacked a bit of self awareness (conscious word choices)while writing.I would recommend Marc Simmons over Dr. Kessel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chronicling history through the relation of linked, lesser-known true stories
Written by John L. Kessell (Professor Emeritus of History, University of New Mexico) Pueblos, Spaniards, and the Kingdom of New Mexico is a narrative history of the seventeenth century of New Mexico, accurately portraying the tension between the Pueblo Indians and Spanish colonizers. Chronicling history through the relation of linked, lesser-known true stories, Pueblos, Spaniards, and the Kingdom of New Mexico offers its own interpretation and analysis of the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, the Spanish reconquest in the 1690s, and much more. A welcome addition to Native American and New Mexico state history shelves, especially recommended for public library collections.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pueblos, Spaniards, and the Kingdom of New Mexico
Kessel has again delivered a hard-to-put-down narrative of Spanish New Mexico that would serve as a perfect accompaniment to a college-level course on my favorite subject: New Mexico! ... Read more

Alamogordo was unusual for a Southwestern town at the time in that it was a planned community, the planning being carried out by Charles Bishop Eddy's and John Arthur Eddy's Alamogordo Improvement Company. . The Eddys saw a library as being necessary for their community and they gave financial support to the Alamogordo Woman's Club to start the library. The Civic League retained ownership of the library until 1958 when it was sold for one dollar to the City of Alamogordo. . The library had resided in a series of rented rooms until 1962 when a library building was constructed at 920 Oregon Avenue. The building was 10,280 square feet (955 m) and cost $175,000. John Reed of Albuquerque was the architect. The library building was doubled in size in 1987 to 20,764 square feet (1,929.0 m) at a cost of $871,042. The architect was again John Reed. In 2001 a block of land next to the current library was donated to the city to be the site of a new library building, planned at 40,000 square feet (3,700 m). Product Description
Purchase of this book includes free trial access to www.million-books.com where you can read more than a million books for free. This is an OCR edition with typos.Excerpt from book:EDENTATES OR TOOTHLESS ANIMALS(Edentata)The edentates stand at the bottom of the series of the non- marsupial mammals. In distribution they are almost entirely restricted to South America, the best-known members of the group being the ant-eaters, sloths and armadillos. Of these only the ant-eaters are strictly "edentate" or without teeth; so the name is somewhat misleading, although none of them have any front teeth (incisors) and such teeth as they do possess are often rudimentary and decidedly primitive in character. In former ages we had in North America gigantic beasts of this order, as is shown by the fossil remains of the megalonyx and mylodon, huge sloth-like animals, which existed along with the mastodon and sabre-toothed tigers and doubtless served as the chief source of food supply for the latter. When we think of these former giants it is disappointing to find that our only representative of the edentates within the limits of the United States to-day is a single species of armadillo which crosses the Mexican boundary into the state of Texas. This curious beast, representing the family Dasypodidce, is by no means without interest.THE ARMADILLOS Family Dasypodidce Nine-banded ArmadilloTatu novemciiictiim Linnaeus Also known as Peba Armadillo, Mulita. Length. 30 inches.Description. Body covered by a bony shell, consisting of two larger portions connected in the middle by eight bony rings(nine on the sides), which hinge one to the other so as to permit of the animal rolling itself into a ball. Front of the head, fore-feet and tail similarly armoured, toes of fore-feet with large claws for digging. Colour brownish-black above, somewhat varied with yellow, below yellowish white, skin on sides of face flesh colour with a few... ... Read more

Product Description
Created by the visionary Charles B. Eddy, Carlsbad rose from the humble beginnings of a tent city to become a vital community on the banks of the Pecos River. One of the largest irrigation projects known at that time made the transformation possible. The Carlsbad Caverns, discovered by James Larkin White and documented by local photographer Ray V. Davis, introduced the world to the wonders that lay beneath the desert surface. World War II saw Carlsbad members of the 200th and 515th Coast Artillery units being thrown into the midst of the Bataan Death March. With the discovery of a large deposit of potash east of town, agriculture flourished nationwide and prosperity returned to the town. As the country moved into the nuclear age, Carlsbad once again played a significant role. The detonation of the Gnome Project in 1961 and the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant of the present day have provided the country with vital knowledge and nuclear waste storage. ... Read more
