This attractive collection is divided into:
Legends, including Supernatural legends, Religious legends, and a single Historical legend, and
Folktales, including Universal folktales, Cautionary tales, and a single Humorous tale.
This bilingual edition doesn't follow the usual "facing page" format, instead putting the English translations first with the Spanish originals following. An innovation I would like to see picked up by other compilers of such works, as it seems to me distracting to have text and translation within eyeshot of each other.
Both the English and Spanish texts are written in a straightforward style, poetic in the manner of oral lore. The Spanish was direct enough to be comprehensible to this non-native speaker. How far it corresponds to the actual speech of representative tellers I cannot judge.
My only criticism would be the lack of notes, unfortunately common enough in popular publishings of folklore (but good grief, this is produced by the "Museum of New Mexico Press"!). Folklore arises from a people who have their own assumptions and idiosyncracies, and to the shame of America, this culture, whose antecedents predate much of the European invasion, is not well known away from the immediate locality. Further, many of these tales occur in many significant variants. For example, dig about in collections of Southwest Hispanic or Mexican folklore, and you will encounter many radically different takes on La Llorona, the Weeping Woman. The text included in this book is more or less suitable for reading before mixed company, but some of the others, wow!

Very well written, but such a disturbing event
The cover has changed, by the way and is actually visually pleasing, not something you should get used to with this book, except where it talks of the dances held at each of the prisons prior to filling the prison with inmates.

The book is very well written, it very accurately describes what happened there, but it's awful because of what happened. I know it's supposed to make you think that the state of the prison and the corruption caused those men to do the most inexcusable things, but that's exactly what that level of barbarism is to me. Inexcusable. One prison official called them animals but I ask you, what animal can you think of that would do such senseless things that are gruesome far beyond any normal experience?

I don't know what excuses they think will cover that, but once you read this book, you might agree that for the prisoners who committed the butchery, rancid turkey on thanksgiving is not an excuse and far too good for them!

I don't care who is ready to say that I'm beastly for seeing such or wishes to make excuses, but nepotism did not have anything to do with the dog-boy, did it? Thank You.

Very good book some boring stuff and the riot part was good and gruesome. Makes me proud to live in NM.

I just had to write this comment to Kelly J. Barnett "black_magic_7". How could have read the WHOLE book and not known that NEW Mexico is part of the United States. Not MEXICO. We are that big empty space between Arizona and Texas.

Several of us have read it and enjoyed it.I studied it at the Ca Corrctions academy and still see some of the problems that existed then, exist now.I worked at a complex in Az as a counselor and some of the same officer carelessness exists now.No lessons in history I guess..
