Excerpt: Bataan Military Academy -Bataan Military Academy is a tuition-free, co-ed, college-prep public high school. All Cadets are members of the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps the U.S. Navys youth organization. Founded by Shelby Dawson-Tallchief, a Lieutenant Commander in the Sea Cadet program and Associate Regional Director for Arizona and New Mexico, Bataan opened at the beginning of the 2007-2008 school year with freshmen and sophomores. Currently accepting students of high school grade levels (9-12), Bataan Military Academy (BMA), a day school, provides a world class education by highly qualified, certified teachers and military service members who are active duty, reservists or retired. The Academy is named Bataan to remember the POW soldiers and sailors who were surrendered to Japanese forces on a Philippine Island named Luzon in 1942. During a forced removal to a POW camp, some 70,000 of these American and Philippine soldiers died during what later became known as the Bataan Death March. In remembrance of these brave men, many of whom were from New Mexicos 200th Coastal Artillery, BMA Cadets participate in the annual 26 mile Bataan Death March Memorial Marathon held at the U.S. Army White Sands Missile Range near Las Cruces, New Mexico. Presently housed in two office buildings at 8001 Mountain RD, Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Commanding Officer for the USNSCC Bataan Battalion RMR 15-2 for Arizona and New Mexico, serves as the Academys Commodore or principal. The Executive Officer for Academic Affairs is the assistant principal and the Executive Officer for Military Affairs provides military-related support leaders...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=25036472 ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Red Sky At Morning
America's Galactic Foreign Legion - Book 1: Feeling Lucky

"Red Sky At Morning" is the first novel I ever read (back in junior high). It gives you a rare look at teens growing up in the Southwest.

4-0 out of 5 stars A solid 4 stars
Red Sky at Morning is a fine coming of age novel, albeit a relatively quiet one.Unlike another reviewer at this site, I don't think it has the power or emotional depth of Catcher in the Rye, but then, few novels do.There is some intensity in the conflict between the narrator, 17-year-old Joshua Arnold, and the neighborhood tough, Chango, and the absence of Joshua's father that compels his transition to adulthood is well handled. Many of the episodes in Joshua's life are amusing and a few are downright funny, making this an enjoyable read.

So here are my quibbles, preventing me from giving the novel five stars:I enjoyed the banter between Joshua's father and the employee he left in charge of the shipyard, and between Joshua's father and Joshua. But when the same kind of light-hearted sarcastic dialog was taken up by his friends Steenie and Marcia, it seemed to me that too many characters were speaking in the same voice, as if they had all been cloned from Joshua's father.More importantly, I was left with the feeling that the novel was striving relentlessly to be light-hearted even in the face of circumstances in Joshua's life (unnamed here to avoid spoiling the plot for those who haven't read the book) that should have been tragic. Finally, I didn't buy Chango's character change at all.I can accept that the events in the novel would have had an impact on Chango, but the immediate and extreme alteration of his personality that Joshua describes isn't credible.

I came to this novel late in life.Perhaps if I'd first read it as a teenager or young adult, or perhaps if I had ever lived in the southwest, it would have left a greater impression. At any rate, I'd give it a solid four stars, but to me it lacks the depth that others see and therefore falls short of greatness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Red Sky at Morning Review
A classic, funny and well-written story of a kid during the War years that manages to succinctly define culture, class, race and region in the US that is valid to this day.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is truly a classic.
I love this book.It is funny and poignant. It describes New Mexican culture so well! Makes me homesick.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of that genre
This is by far my favorite book from that genre. I first read it in high school and have gone back several times over the years. I just purchased it again to give to my 13 year old daughter. ... Read more

Product Description
What would be the odds of a poor Mexican boy who migrated with his family to southern California in the 1920s rising through the ranks of the American education system to become the first Hispanic principal of a junior and senior high school in San Diego, the second Hispanic to be a college president in California, and to serve in the administrations of four U.S. presidents?

Armando Rodriguez spoke no English when he first set foot in the United States and was just old enough to start school in a district with few Spanish-speaking teachers. But with parents who emphasized the importance of education and who taught him the value of hard work, Armando Rodriguez became fluent in English, received a doctorate in bilingual education, and was instrumental in developing the field of bilingual education while serving as Assistant Commissioner of Education for the nation.

Rodriguez recalls his inspirational journey from a short child who was so dark he was nicknamed "Shadow" to being influential in shaping education on district, state, and national levels. Some still call him Shadow, though it is now spoken with respect and admiration for an immigrant who overcame many obstacles to become an instrument of change for his country.

"Armando Rodriguez offers the gift of his fascinating life in this timely and candid autobiography of a poor immigrant child who arrived speaking no English and climbed the entire staircase of the American dream to power in Washington."--Eleanor Holmes Norton ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A truly inspirational life story.
This is the autobiography of Armando Rodriguez who came to the U.S. from Mexico as a child. His beginnings were humble but through hard work and a positive attitude, Armando has created a rich and rewarding life journey for himself. His story is inspiring, detailed and full of humor.

5-0 out of 5 stars It deserves a space on any community library biography shelf
From the poor house in Mexico to the administration of four United States Presidents - sounds like an unbelievable mountain to climb in life, but that's exactly what Armando Rodriguez did. "From the Barrio to Washington: An Educator's Journey" is the inspirational life story of US Assistant Commissioner of Education of Armando Rodriguez who entered the nation speaking no English whatsoever but through a solid work ethic, truly made something of himself. He told his story to biographer Keith Taylor who has made Rodriguez's life story truly come to, pardon the pun, to life off the pages of "From the Barrio to Washington: An Educator's Journey". It deserves a space on any community library biography shelf, and is highly recommended reading for anyone who desire an awe-inspiring tale. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Making of the Atom Bomb (Nonfiction)
This book describes the creation of the atomic bomb from the original ideas up to the dropping of the bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. As with all scientific developments, the bomb started as an idea in Albert Einstein's head. In 1938, two German scientists split the uranium atom and detected lighter elements. About the same time, Hitler drove the Jewish scientists out of Europe, with most of them fleeing to the United States. World War II brought on a race between the Germans and the Americans to make an atomic weapon. The American Manhatten Project achieved the first controlled nuclear reaction in 1942. The first atomic bomb was tested in New Mexico, in July of 1945. The bomb was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. Nagasaki was bombed on August 9 of 1945 as well. This was the beginning of the atomic age.

I would recommend the book to people who like fast moving nonfiction. I, myself, enjoyed the book because it was a factual presentation of how the atomic bomb was made. I also enjoyed reading about the problems and struggles that people faced. It was amazing to read about how one particular scientist came up with a theory that led to the actual creation of the atomic bomb. As you can see, this is one book I would greatly recommend. However, if a person is looking for an adventurous nonfiction book, this is not the book to read.

My favorite part of the book involved the scientists working to figure out the uranium atom and then spliting it. It was very interesting to see how they went about this. In addition, I learned a lot about atoms, neutrons, protons, and electrons. This part of the book made me want to learn more about physics, fission, and fusion. Overall, this was the most exciting part of the whole fantastic book for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Impossible to put down
The Making of the Atom Bomb is a wonderful book.It presents the accomplishments of some of the most brilliant scientists of the 20th century in terms that are accessible to lay readers. It recounts in scintillating detail how their discoveries were appropriated from the realm of science into the brutal domain of world war.Despite its length the book is almost impossible to put down, and it is as morally provocative as it is historically astute. ...
