Product Description
Early in 1870 a New York Times article on Santa Fe noted that the city was "so much unlike anything in America that one feels a stranger in a strange land." New Mexico's Hispanic culture often clashed with what outsiders considered to be American. Public schooling in New Mexico became one means of transforming Hispanos into Americans.

Hispanos themselves welcomed the opportunity to educate their children, although they wished to do so in ways that made sense within their own community and cultural patterns. From the earliest years of the Territory through the 1930s, both Hispanos and Anglos sought to provide equal educational opportunities while preserving aspects of Hispanic culture. These efforts, though not always successful, made New Mexico an intriguing exception among Southwestern states in educating Hispanics.

New Mexico's unique experience offers a new perspective on the role of schools as a vehicle for democracy and inclusion within a multicultural nation. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Santa Fe school of cooking cookbook
The three recipes I followed were very good.I would recommend this book to anyone interested in New Mexico style cooking.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Next Best Thing to Taking a Class There
As a New Mexican, it's difficult to not be biased but I will say this, if there is only room for one Southwestern cookbook on your shelf then this one is it!

Susan Curtis, the author and owner of the school, does an magnificent job of presenting a variety of delicious recipes which give an excellent overview of the diversity of the cuisine of the region. The recipes range from simple and traditional New Mexican fare such as Green Chile Stew to more contemporary Southwestern cuisine like Lime Marinated Grilled Salmon (a personal favorite that I serve for company regularly.)

Susan has produced a book that contains recipes which are clear, concise and very easy to follow. In addition to excellent recipes, she includes descriptions of all of the ingredients and tips on using them. There are also many stories which convey the history and development of the foods of the area. It's truly a cookbook that you can just enjoy reading since there is so much more than just recipes between it's covers.

Many of the recipes are from the classes taught at the school. If you're fortunate enough to visit Santa Fe then a class at the school should be on your "must do" list.If you can't, then this book is the next best thing!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Cookbook
This is a wonderful book!I bought a copy when I attended a class at the Santa Fe School of Cooking but someone was "helping" me in the kitchen and spilled something on it. Most of the pages were stuck together before I found out about it.It has some of my very favorite recipes in it so I was glad to finally replace it with a new copy.Try the cookbook and if you are in Santa Fe, be sure to sign up for a great class at the School.

3-0 out of 5 stars So So
Disappointed that this cookbook did not have more hints for cooking a high elevations with hispanic flavor.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Essential Cookbook for Southwest Food Lovers
We consider this cookbook as one of the best southwest cookbooks available. Not only that, but we've been to the school in Santa Fe.It was a great experience to just be there. This cookbook is written by those living the culture of the foods. It's real stuff! ... Read more

Product Description
Twenty-five years before the Manhattan Project created the town of Los Alamos, the Pajarito Plateau was home to an elite prep school for boys, ages twelve to eighteen. The Los Alamos Ranch School combined a robust outdoor life and a carefully cultivated wilderness experience with a rigorous academic program and the structured discipline of a Boy Scout troop, perfectly mirroring the Progressive Era's quest for perfection.

John Wirth's father, Cecil, taught at the school and directed its summer camp. John spent his early childhood at the school along with his brother Tim, later a U.S. Senator from Colorado. Drawing on oral accounts, memoirs, and archival documents, as well as John's firsthand knowledge and family lore, the authors situate the school within the educational trends of the day and New Mexico's cultural milieu.

Wirth and Aldrich examine the influence of the school's controversial director, Albert J. Connell, who was roundly disliked by two of the best-known students, Gore Vidal and William S. Burroughs. Many other students reported their time at the school to be a profoundly positive, often life-changing, experience. Additional chapters recount the growing-up experiences of ranch workers' children and the role the school played in their lives and those of area residents. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars informativ and readable
This is an excellent book, particularly for anyone curious about Los Alamos history. Most people know about the Manhattan Project and the war-time development of the first atomic bomb. This book steps back and reveals the local history and culture of a boys school that was part boy scout training, part classical schooling and part health retreat. A must read for anyone who enjoys New Mexico history and I am grateful that someone was willing and able to pull together a very readable history of "pre-war" Los Alamos. ... Read more

Excerpt: Los Alamos High School (or LAHS) is a nationally ranked public high school in Los Alamos, New Mexico. The strength of LAHS's academic record is largely attributed to the academic nature of Los Alamos County, which has the highest concentration of PhDs per capita in the United States. Additionally, 63% of LAHS faculty have earned an advanced degree. The school is located across from the University of New Mexico's Los Alamos Branch Campus where some students occasionally take classes. Los Alamos High School is a medium sized, suburban high-school serving the entire county of Los Alamos, including White Rock. On the whole, the student body is homogeneously middle class, although the attendance boundary does contain both upper middle class areas like Barranca Mesa and lower middle class areas like the Royal Crest Trailer Park. Elsewhere in New Mexico, LAHS is sometimes characterized as a school for the "rich". LAHS is not a magnet school, but occasionally students from other school districts commute to attend there because the school is well known. The mascot of Los Alamos High School is the Hilltopper, often depicted as a rugged Mountain Man with a walking stick atop the scenic Jemez Mountains that overlook LAHS. During the Second World War Los Alamos was the site of the Manhattan Project. During wartime, structures in Los Alamos were temporary because people were expecting to leave after the wartime project was completed. In August 1945, following the Allied victory in Japan, it was decided the Los Alamos National Laboratory's nuclear research would continue in o...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2885365 ... Read more

This book is about different kinds of stories that are from New Mexico. The book's title is The Day it Snowed Tortillas and it's written by Joe Hayes.
The stroy's title is The Day It Snowed Tortillas. It starts like this: this guy was a wood cutter her only knew how to cut wood, he didn't know anything.Nothing! One day he went up to the mountains in the village he saw immediately three bags full of gold coins. He carried them all the way down the moutains...his wife had him buy flour- this tricked the robbers. If you like short stories and surprises at the end, you would consider this book to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars The woodcuters finds gold what will he find next?
"You found gold" the woodcutter said. The woodcutter's wife is smart so she makes a plan for if in case the robbers come to their village to reclaim their gold. You would really want to read this book. It is not one story it is a bunch of stories. If you want to find out what the wooodcutter's wife has in store for the robbers, and want to find this book, it is called The Day It Snowed Tortillas. In my point of view I highly recommend this book.
