Fast-paced but thorough, its bite-size chapters each focus on an event, person, or place of historical significance. Rich in anecdotes and illustrations, it whisks readers from colonial New Amsterdam through Manhattan's past, right up to post-9/11 New York. Editorial Review Product Description Whether you're digging into a slice of cherry cheesecake, burning your tongue on a piece of fiery Jamaican jerk chicken, or slurping the broth from a juicy soup dumpling, eating in New York City is a culinary adventure unlike any other in the world. An irresistible sampling of the city's rich food heritage,Gastropolis explores the personal and historical relationship between New Yorkers and food. Beginning with the origins of cuisine combinations, such as Mt. Olympus bagels and Puerto Rican lasagna, the book describes the nature of food and drink before the arrival of Europeans in 1624 and offers a history of early farming practices. Essays trace the function of place and memory in Asian cuisine, the rise of Jewish food icons, the evolution of food enterprises in Harlem, the relationship between restaurant dining and identity, and the role of peddlers and markets in guiding the ingredients of our meals. They share spice-scented recollections of Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx, and colorful vignettes of the avant-garde chefs, entrepreneurs, and patrons who continue to influence the way New Yorkers eat. Touching on everything from religion, nutrition, and agriculture to economics, politics, and psychology,Gastropolis tells a story of immigration, amalgamation, and assimilation. This rich interplay between tradition and change, individual and society, and identity and community could happen only in New York. Customer Reviews (2)

not quite
Not for a quick trip
Great companion to see Manhattan with The moreextensive entries are very welcome. In Union Square with this book and aview of the surrounding buildings, I was able to spend a pleasant andinformative hour on a park bench, for free. That's a better bargain thanthe Staten Island Ferry. Morrone keeps the architect's jargon to aminimum and knows his subject well. The historical insights and views onclashing aesthetics were skillfully presented. He pointed out a couple ofmuseums of very high caliber that I wasn't even aware of. A book like thisis a perfect jumping off point for thousands of topics, from neighborhoodsto cultures to politics to construction. I would encourage him to writesimilar books on the other buroughs, or better yet, an even more detailedwork on each of the neighborhoods of Manhattan: each of them has at least athousand buildings worth writing about. ... Editorial Review Product Description While it may seem that every possible topic about New York City's attractions has been written about, Off the Beaten (Subway) Track is the first book to focus on the hundreds of off-the-beaten-path destinations in the city. Some are small museums, others are historic places long forgotten, some are stores that sell only odd things, and some are distinguished for their claim to fame as the world's largest/smallest whatever. All of them are notable for the passion with which their proprietors and curators care for them, and all can be visited via the subway system as the author directs readers to which of the city's 486 subway stations will get them closest. These are the types of places and things that fit perfectly with New Yorkers' psyches and egos and satisfy the desire of tourists to see the unusual. For example, New York is home to the world's tallest Doric column, the world's largest armory, the world's largest cathedral, and the world's largest Reform synagogue. It also has a troll museum, a numismatic museum, a skyscraper museum, doll and toy museums, and a museum of comic and cartoon art. In many cases, half the fun of visiting many of these sites is meeting the people behind them. Organized geographically to help readers explore the culture and diversity of the city's great neighborhoods, Off the Beaten (Subway) Track: New York City's Best Unusual Attractions offers venues in Lower, Middle, and Upper Manhattan; Brooklyn; the Bronx; Queens; and Staten Island. Each section features attractions and fascinating sidebars highlighting places that are particularly interesting to explore. Customer Reviews (19)
