Excerpt: New York Military Academy, or NYMA, is an American private boarding school located in Cornwall-on-Hudson, New York. It was founded in 1889 by Charles Jefferson Wright, a Civil War veteran and former school teacher from New Hampshire who believed that a military structure provided the best environment for academic achievement, a philosophy to which the school adhered. NYMA has a long history as a college preparatory school with a military structure that enrolled students from the New York metropolitan area as well as around the country and the world. Wright's successor, Sebastian Jones, presided over the Academy from 1894-1922, guiding it during its most critical period of growth from a young and small institution of 48 cadets, through a disastrous fire in 1910, and throughout an extensive reconstruction program. NYMA is now one of the oldest military schools in the United States. In 1975, the Academy became a coeducational institution, admitting women for the first time in the school's history. The school has recently emerged from a difficult period in which it faced the possibility it would have to close its doors due to dwindling enrollment and financial problems. New York Military Academy held what was said to be "the final graduation ceremonies" in June, 2010. However, a group of alumni and local businessmen created a plan to save the school raisi...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2728110 ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Battle Dress
Battle Dress, by Amy Efaw

"Battle Dress" follows Andrea Davis through her first sumer at West Point, a time when the incoming class is stripped of their civilian lives. Andi's family life is clearly dysfunctional, mostly described through flashbacks and the order of West Point is a sort of comfort to her. I would have liked a little more detail on the why, but I don't think it's necessary for the story as the bits provided easily set up Andi's home life.

While her initial goal is to survive the summer training, Andi has stringent demands for herself. She strives to be the best in everything, to prove to herself that she belongs. It's also an attempt to confront the stereotypes held by some male members of her platoon - the belief that females don't belong. So she pushes herself to excel, to push past the pain and uncertainty to be accepted, to belong.

The author's own experiences at West Point add authenticity to "Battle Dress," and a helpful glossary of military terms is included. Efaw notes for readers that she simplified a few of the cadet command structures, but otherwise kept true with everything else. I think this book would be especially appreciated by anyone interested in military academies.

Andi Davis is a character that will stay with me for quite a while; I think many readers will see at least a part of themselves in her. Efaw excels at writing strong characters who thrive in difficult situations. I was rooting for Andi to succeed; her determination and strength won me over early, and "Battle Dress" was a book I couldn't put down. If you liked this book, I encourage you to check out the author's other book, "After," which is also about another strong female.

5/5.

5-0 out of 5 stars Battle Dress
A must read for any female who wants to join the military or especially attend a military academy. Also great for parents and family members of cadets, since they never have time to call or write home about what they are doing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Military Story From a Different Point of View
I read Amy Efaw's novel, AFTER, a few weeks ago and was curious about her earlier books. BATTLE DRESS was also written in the point of view and voice of a teenage girl. It chronicled the experience of a 17 year old in her first months at West Point. Efaw is a quality story teller with the ability to place the reader in the scene. It was like watching a Broadway play, sitting on stage. I loved both of Efaw's novels and hope she's working on a third,

5-0 out of 5 stars West Point can't be worse than my life at home... can it?
Andi Davis wanted to escape; escape her abusive mother, escape her resigned father, and escape from a boring, nothingness existence. West Point seemed like the best option for her. It provided strenuous training, promised rigorous academic challenges, and most of all, a way out. All Andi had to do in return for a free college education was serve in the Army after school; and after all she's been through, this should be a piece of cake.

Then Andi arrives at West Point for the first six weeks as known as Beast. This is where a majority of cadets realize what they are in for and run for the hills; but not Andi. While the upper class cadets scream, rant and rave, and use the new cadets as their personal slaves, Andi decides to hunker done and make it through. In the process she learns more about herself, her place in the world, and what she is really made of.

I found this book very real. I mean, the way everything was described made me feel like I was actually there with Andi. If you've ever seen An Officer and a Gentleman or seen an "Inside the World of a Military Academy" show you already have a mental image of what is taking place in the book, but Efaw brings it life for you. Andi was a very familiar character and listening to her story unfold was like listening to a friend talk. The other cadets were very well-rounded and balanced as well. No two cadets were alike and it made for very realistic discord. Naturally there will be some trouble-makers in every group and this story was no exception. Yet, in the end, I truly believe that everyone had grown as a person and really found what they were looking for at West Point.

Give this book a chance and I promise you won't be disappointed. And if you haven't already, check out my review of her second novel After here.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible
I was thinking about applying to West Point, but after reading this book from the library I've decided that there is no way. It's not only because the environment depicted is so bad, the book itself is so bad! I can't believe the author of this book graduated from college. Did Amy Efaw really graduate from college? Apparently yes because the life of the main character, Andi, is based on the life of the author, Amy Efaw. (In other words, this is an autobiographical novel.) Every page of this book is terrible...from the dialogue (way too much) to the descriptions (few and far between). ... Read more

Product Description
On May 9, 1968, junior high school teacher Fred Nauman received a letter that would change the history of New York City. It informed him that he had been fired from his job. Eighteen other educators in the Ocean Hill-Brownsville area of Brooklyn received similar letters that day. The dismissed educators were white. The local school board that fired them was predominantly black. The crisis that the firings provoked became the most racially divisive moment in the city in more than a century, sparking three teachers' strikes and increasingly angry confrontations between black and white New Yorkers at bargaining tables, on picket lines, and in the streets.

This superb book revisits the Ocean Hill-Brownsville crisis -- a watershed in New York City race relations. Jerald E. Podair connects the conflict with the sociocultural history of the city and explores its legacy. The book is a powerful, sobering tale of racial misunderstanding and fear, a New York story with national implications. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not "fired," but rather "dismissed"?
The review below shows the passion this episode created and can still evoke. To argue that Nauman wasn't "fired" is rather disingenuous. The letter he received stated "The Governing Board of the Ocean Hill Brownsville Demonstration School District has voted to end your employment in the schools of this district."Sounds like a pink slip to me.

More importantly, as the reviewer below notes, is that "community control" was seen as as the last-ditch solution to the persistent problems faced by African-Americans in the school system. They were (and are) getting third-rate educations. The argument was (and is): why?"Cultural" reasons?Racism? If the African-American community ran its own schools, the argument went, black children would learn better. For various reasons, many of them political, it didn't turn out that way.The most important result was to divide the city by race--especially the Jews from the blacks.

One of the key points made by this book is that the Ocean Hill-Brownsville strike had the effect of making New York Jews "white" in the sense that they joined with their Italian and Irish outer-borough neighbors against the blacks. This seismic shift has largely remained intact.

You can easily get by with reading only chapters 1-3, 5-6.

Read this book if you have an interest in New York City history, politics of the "white backlash", and/or the rise of conservatism in the 1970s.

3-0 out of 5 stars The teachers were NOT fired
Fred Nauman and the other teachers were NOT fired by the Oceanhill-Browsville local school district. They were dismissed from that district and reassigned to the Board of Education's main office. From there, they would have been reassigned to another local district, with no loss of pay or seniority.

However, Albert Shanker and the American Federation of Teachers used this as an excuse to strike the entire district.Their goal was to cripple NYC's attempt to give local communities some control over their schools. The strike was totally devoid of any progressive content that unionists and their supporters could be proud of. It was a racist strike, aimed at African-Americans in Oceanhill, Puerto Ricans in East Harlem, and a multicultured district on Manhattan's Lower East Side.

Shanker, it might be remembered, was cited in Woody Allen's movie, "Sleeper."The hero awoke to a world that had, at one time, been laid waste by nuclear weapons. When asked how the war started he was told, "It all started when a man named Albert Shanker got The Bomb."

I was a student teacher in Oceanhill in 1969, the spring following the strike.I was also a member of the AFT for the five years I taught public school. This was a period just after the civil rights struggle had passed its peak. Community control was an effort to counteract the historical racial inequities that plague public school in this country.

Readers who want a feel for a successful desegregation fight should try Davidson Douglas, Reading, Writing and Race: The Desegregation of the Charlotte (NC) Schools.I taught kindergarten there for two years during the height of the bussing controversy.See also The Battle of Boston, by Jon Hillson. ...
