Product Description

Published to coincide with the sixtieth anniversary of Newfoundland and Labrador joining Canada, Sean T. Cadigan has written the book that will surely become the definitive history of one of North America's most distinct and beautiful regions. The site of the first European settlement by Vikings one thousand years ago, a former colony of England, and known at various times as Terra Nova and Newfoundland until its official name change to Newfoundland and Labrador in 2001, this easternmost point of the continent has had a fascinating history in part because of its long-held position as the gateway between North America and Europe. Examining the region from prehistoric times to the present, Newfoundland and Labrador is not only a comprehensive history of the province, but an illuminating portrait of the Atlantic world and European colonisation of the Americas.

Cadigan comprehensively details everything from the first European settlements, the displacement and extinction of the indigenous Beothuk by European settlers, the conflicts between settlers and imperial governance, to the Royal Newfoundland Regiment's near annihilation at the Battle of the Somme, the rise of Newfoundland nationalism, Joey Smallwood's case for confederation, and the modernization and economic disappointments instigated by joining Canada. Paying particular attention to the ways in which Newfoundland and Labrador's history has been shaped by its environment, this study considers how natural resources such as the Grand Banks, the disappearance of cod, and off-shore oil have affected the region and its inhabitants.

Richly detailed, compelling, and written in an engaging and accessible style, Newfoundland and Labrador brings the rich and vibrant history of this remarkably interesting region to life.

5-0 out of 5 stars beautiful book, not just for kids
This book is certainly a touch of home for N & L people.I bought it for my 75 yr old mom and my adult children. My mom lived on Prospect Street, 2 blocks from the wharf. The houses were not painted like a circus when she grew up there, or when we visited in the 60s'.Now I think it is for the tourists.Anyways, it is beautifully written and illustrated. It has simple writing for the younger oneson part of the page, and more indepth writng for older ones.

I know this is a series of states and provinces.I just picked up T is for Tarheel at my Costco for my grandson and me.Not a good series for book lovers , especially if you like alphabet books. you could go broke.

Product Description
The first German arrived in Newfoundland with Leif Eirikson's Viking expedition. By 1914, St. John's was home to a vibrant German community while a Moravian enclave thrived in Labrador. Contemporary Newfoundland, however, remembers its German heritage largely in terms of U-Boat captains and local spies. Gerhard Bassler reveals what was lost when almost all earlier memories of Germans in Newfoundland and Labrador vanished. "Vikings to U-Boats" explores the colony's hidden multicultural history, examining both sides of the German-Newfoundland/Labrador experience. From first recorded contacts to the end of World War II, Bassler traces the lives of German-speaking fishermen, musicians, doctors, engineers, and entrepreneurs. He reconstructs the historical reality behind U-Boat and spy stories and analyses the change in status of the colony's German-speaking people from neighbours to "enemy aliens." "Vikings to U-Boats" challenges the assumption that the history of Newfoundland and Labrador was shaped solely by English-speakers from the British Isles. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Newfoundland and Labrador
The book is dated (1988), so I bet some things have changed over the past 18 years.I won't know until I visit Newfoundland this summer.Still a good read for anyone interested in the area.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful view of Newfoundland
I found this book while staying at a B&B in Newfoundland, and it was such a wonderful read that I had to run out and buy a copy to take home with me.With wonderful insights into the people of Newfoundland the authors use powerful images and the words of the Newfoundlanders themselves to tell the stories of the place. Alternately powerful and fun, this book is a must for anyone wishing to understand the lives of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador and their place in history and Canada. ... Read more

Product Description
Newfoundland and Labrador has a long history of commercial whaling, beginning in the first half of the sixteenth century, when Basque whalers established seasonal stations on the Labrador coast, from which to hunt bowheads and North Atlantic right whales. Anthony Dickinson and Chesley Sanger examine the region's modern shore-station industry, from its beginnings in 1896 to its peak catch season in 1904, through subsequent cycles of decline and revival, until its enforced closure in 1972 by the federal government. Modern shore-station whaling on Canada's eastern shores developed with the spread of Norwegian-dominated whaling from local areas where stocks that had been depleted by new hunting technologies to more productive locations in the North Atlantic and elsewhere. "Twentieth-Century Shore-Station Whaling in Newfoundland and Labrador" adds to a growing number of regionally specific case studies that collectively illustrate the complex nature of the history of global whaling. Dickinson and Sanger further demonstrate how participants in the industry were instrumental in developing other whaling initiatives, including those in British Columbia. ... Read more

Product Description

The story of Newfoundland and Labrador is told in the region's place names, from Deadman's Cove to Paradise, from Famine Gut to Heart's Delight, and in the family histories of those rugged settlers who chose these names for their communities. It is a land of contradictions. This diversity is also reflected in the region's architecture, with strong cultural links to Ireland and West County England. This fascinating book will delight both "true Newfoundlanders" and those of us from "away."

Product Description

Following his appointment by Premier Brian Peckford in 1985 to chair a Royal Commission on Employment and Unemployment, Douglas House was seconded to head the Economic Recovery Commission in 1989. This body was formed during the premiership of Clyde Wells to address the need for significant social and economic reform in Newfoundland and Labrador. In the process of initiating this restructuring, however, House was struck by the unyielding strength of the bureaucratic barriers of provincial government.

Against the Tide is House's account of the commission's seven years of struggle with bureaucracy, party politics, premiers, and patronage until its dissolution upon the arrival of Premier Brian Tobin. Despite its initial support of the commission's agenda, the Newfoundland government's concern with the issues ebbed, and House and the ERC were refused the authority to implement many of the important plans for reform. With candid assessment of Newfoundland and Labrador's political history and its current system of bureaucratic control, House argues the need to abandon traditional forms of government as long as they inhibit positive change.

Combining the dramatic scope of memoir and the close analysis of sociological study, Against the Tide forcefully demonstrates the need for a more creative economic approach in Newfoundland and Labrador in order to overcome the persistent social and economic depression of the province. Through personal anecdote and public accounts, the book stands as a testament to the difficulty of fighting the relentless tide of political and bureaucratic power in Canada. ... Read more

Product Description
Toward the end of the eighteenth century, when western Newfoundland (Canada) was still known as the French Shore, a few pioneer families began to settle in Bay of Islands. From the early settlements of Curling, Humbermouth, Brake's Cove and others in the Bay of Islands, grew the city of Corner Brook. Through prose and photographs, Harold Horwood, one of Canada's most distinghuished writers, gives us an exciting and descriptive account of the social history of one of the most beautiful cities in the country.
Situated at the mouth of the magnificent Humber River, Corner Brook was selected by one of the most extraordinary entrepreneurs of the century, Sir Eric Bowater, as the centrepiece in his vast pulp and paper empire. Bowater's was his company, and Corner Brook was his town. As the company grew and developed, so too did the town.
In this research, Horwood misses no opportunity to relay firsthand accounts of this great industrial entreprise and this beautifu!l city, from the first pioneers, the humble loggers and mill workers to distinghuished managers and owners. The book ends with the recent transition of ownership by Bowater to Kruger Incorporated. ... Read more
