Product Description

Throughout its history Nicaragua has been plagued by corruption, social and racial inequality, civil unrest, and foreign interference.Yet despite being the second poorest nation in South America, Nicaragua maintains a rich and vibrant culture that reflects its strong Catholic devotion, diverse indigenous roots, and overwhelming zest for life. Culture and Customs of Nicaragua introduces students and general readers to Nicaragua's unique blend of religious and traditional holidays, so numerous that the country is said to be in a constant state of celebration; its growing film industry; its many styles of dance, the popular street theatre open to all bystanders; important contributions to Spanish literature, local cuisines, architecture, social norms, and more.Readers learn what it is like to live in one of Latin America's most disillusioned countries but also discover the passionate culture that defines and sustains the Nicaraguan people.

Product Description
Attempts to construct resilient democracies have been as pervasive as reversals have been cruel in Latin America. Based on a wealth of original historical documents and contemporary interviews, this volume analyzes five centuries of political history through paradigmatic examples of outstanding democratic success and abysmal failure. It demonstrates that while factors highlighted by standard explanations matter, it is political culture that configures economic development, institutional choices and political pacts in ways that directly affect democracy's chances and quality. ... Product Description
This book seeks to provide a definitive assessment so far of the arts in Nicaragua since 1979, with analyses of specific cultural policies and particular artworks associated with them. Demonstrates why the concept of art being advanced is innovative in relation to that of most earlier revolutions and how the ideological pluralism on which it is based is fundamentally at odds with the earlier doctrine of Socialist Realism. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've ever read!
This book should be required reading in school, the historical perspective, info on nature, and Belts perspective on anthropology are priceless and disturbing.

A cross between a travel book and biology class, under extreme conditions with 4 legged transportation. It makes me appreciate how difficult it was to travel, back in the day, in a tropical country.
The author was working for a mining company and travelled extensively. Belt does an excellent job of describing what he experienced.
Some things are little changed up to the present day, horses and mules are still pulling wagons with wooden wheels, now competing for room on the roads with modern 4x4's.
Nicaragua has lost much of what Belt describes but is still a beautiful country. Read the book, then go visit before the population destroys the rest....

5-0 out of 5 stars A Naturalist in Nicaragua
This book is one of the best natural history books ever writen. Thomas Belt lived in Nicargua for 4 years during the last century and his travel with in the country descrived the way the tropics used to be 100 years ago.Since he wrote the book, 98% of the low land tropical dry forest have beendeforested. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A Bit Biased and in Need of Updating
After spending a month in Nicaragua, living with a Nica family, I don't feel this book is completely accurate.First of all, it dwells on all the negative things that have happened in Nicaragua in the past (natural disasters, revolutions, foreign intervention) but, in my opinion, it needs to spend more time on the positive and how Nicaraguans have overcome these events. Although I consider myself somewhat left-of-center politically, this book is completely left leaning.I'd like something more neutral. It also blames many of Nicaragua's problems on foreign governments, and whereas there is some truth to this, it isn't accurate to be blamed for everything. Lastly, I feel the informaion is somewhat out of date.Although it says it was updated just two years ago, I don't think much was actually updated and changed.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LIVED FOR YEARS IN NICARAGUA STUDYING CULTURE AND HISTORY AND GEOGRAPHY: THIS BOOK IS AS GOOD AS IT GETS!,
The only possible improvement would be an updating of this book, now five years later, with the free and fair re-election of Daniel Ortega once more as President of Nicaragua, and moving towards the Bolivariano international movement of Latin America.

This book adequately, clearly and comprehensively covers the history of this nation from William Walker to the aerial bombardment of the civilian city of Ocotal by US Marines to the most recent times, reported very objectively despite what appears elsewhere upon this page by those who might not have seen the same book as the one I received. I find this book very objective, wel-researched, written and reported, and very thorough.

It is a wonderful addition to any school library at any level, and a great resource for anyone interested in learning more about this intriguing and exciting nation. I lived there. This book tells it like it was, and is.

And that excellent cover photo of the woman with the generous warm smile selling tostadas in the market is making my mouth water with warm memories of happier times.

Not only for the student, but also for travellers. Excellent and updated travellers tips are included for which I can vouch, including how safe it once was while I lived there, although less stable now after the intervening US supported Aleman and Chamorro governments which enslaved Nicaragua once more in globalization and sweatshops and slavery.

Very good book to prepare for any trip to Nicaragua. This is a good book, believe me, and the photos are also great. PLEASE DO AN UPDATE SOON!

5-0 out of 5 stars Nicaragua for visitors
I have gone to Nicaragua two or three times a year over the past 25 years. This little book is a good overview of the country without getting ideological. It is a few years out of date, but it seems to me pretty accurate. I will order it for my university students who go with me next year.
