Product Description
This study of Norse mythology is one in a series of seven that consists of comprehensive analyses of each of the six major Indo-European mythologies.
The Indo Europeans are defined by a common group of languages that extend, as the name implies, from India to Ireland.Among these peoples extensive mythologies have survived in Indian, Persian, Greek, Norse or Germanic, Irish, and Welsh and Arthurian stories. We caution that our account is not for the faint-hearted since our studies have analyzed all of these six mythologies individually in a long and intensive study to a depth that has not even been attempted for a hundred years or more.
Although many Norse stories have been lost the surviving parts are clearly linked to other Indo European legends in major themes, individual names, and family relationships. We have found matches with most of the six generations we have identified in Indian mythology as well as links with other mythologies. The most remarkable of these matches are the sacrifice of the creator, shown in the stories of the Norse Buri, the Indian Bhuri/Brahma and the Greek Boreas; the war between the Aesir and Vanir; and the character and life of the King of the Gods. The Norse King of the Gods, whose oldest name is Gwoden, is essentially the same as the Indian Gadhin in both name and role. Later we find clear matches in the story of the Norse brothers, Geirrodr and Agnar, and the Indian Garuda and Agni. Geirrodr is also the Norse smith Volund, who was imprisoned and escaped by flying just as in the Greek myth of Daedalus and the Indian myth of Garuda and his brother Jatayu.Importantly we believe that we have identified the mysterious Loki with the Indian priest Narada who is also called Lokayoni and who is noted as being malicious and a troublemaker.Further, Narada is the human form of the God Vishnu. The last generation is very difficult to identify but we see elements that could be identified with the Indian Krishna.
This volume links Norse myths firmly with the other Indo European mythologies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mythologyyyyyyy
I love Mythology. Specifically Norse in this case.
This book, just had it all. Every god and goddess I cared to read about. It was compact enough to fit in my hand bag, (yes my hand bag is bigger than most...and yes I carry mythological encyclopedias a round....how embarressment. :p ) For any one interested in the ancient myths from norse, classical, or celtic, this book is a one stop wonder. if it doesn't have the info you need or want, it has enough to point you in the right direction. There's also info in this book, that for whatever reason I never found else where, such as on internet sites or text book.
Very in depth, easy to follow. a great read and a great purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars A valuable resource for any library...
Greek, Norse, and Celtic Mythology are covered pretty thoroughly within these pages. The section on the celtic hero Cuchulain is one of the most in depth articles on him I have encountered.

This is an excellent resource.

Other versions have been released by Cotterell that cover Asian and Oriental mythology as well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing mythology collection
I suppose that some of the work in this book, one of a 13 volume set written between 1916 and 1932 (reprinted in the 1960s, has been changed by more recent scholarship, but there is still nothing to equal this fantastic achievement. The set includes not only the more familiar myths such as Greek and Roman, but pretty well succeeds in its goal to include all of humanity. The text is extremely detailed but very readable; none of the turgid prose so often associated with academia. The volumes contain numerous illustrations, both in the text and as plates (mostly black & white.)
One of the most useful parts of the set is the final volume, an extremely detailed index, which allows the reader to pursue a theme, or even a topic as specific as the significance of belts, across all the volumes. The individual volumes do not have their own indices, but the tables of contents are fairly detailed. The books appear to have been issued without dust jackets.

5-0 out of 5 stars More like Germanic mythology
I briefly combed through them. A great resource. This man cared about his Teutonic/Germanic heritage and the old ways. He wanted to put down in writing our beliefs before the desert religion completely extirpated them all.

Fortunately, you can't keep the Gods down forever. Meaning "belief" doesn't come from a vacuum and therefore as many Pagans know Christianity is on its last legs, tottering like a fallen drunk, and this time history won't be repeated. Or maybe inversely? At any rate it all happened for a reason and probably not for those many out there think. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading
When I was still in H.S. i found this book in the library, and read it through. A decade later I wrote to AMS Press and bought one. This book, produced under the auspices of the American Scandanavian Foundation is a great introduction to the Norse pantheon, and all of the stories of it's rise and fall. The foundation also published fantastic full versions of classic Norse sagas. Although I am not a student of Anglo-Saxon history, I am a Tolkien fan from the 70's. These books are a great resource for anyone interested in Norse history (I try not to use the word "mythology" in reference to anyone's beliefs). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful & Imaginative Tales!!!
Tales of the Norse Gods
Based upon Norse mythology, this book would make a great gift for any fan of mythology or adventure. An anthology of several short stories from a diverse group of writers accompanied by some very good illustrations, it would be great for personal reading or to read aloud with a group of family or friends or even to be used in classroom instruction at the 7-12 or college level. In particular, "The Passing of the Gods" by Mr. Rob Morganbesser I found to be most enjoyable and look forward to reading more of his work.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Norse Gods Come to Life!
Finally someone did something with the Norse Gods other than Marvel's Thor series. Very well done and a very fast read to boot, Wild Cat Books has hit the nail on the head with this anthology. Representing original takes on the old Norse Gods, Odin, Thor, Loki, Hel, this is an engrossing and interesting book. It has some very dark moments and some lighter (revolving around Thor) ones. The story that grabbed me the most was THE PASSING OF THE GOD'S, where an old Norseman, loyal to his ancestral ways, meets his gods as they are driven off from this plane of reality by the Christian God, who doesn't want any competition it seems. The reader can feel the main characters pain as he rails against the weakness of his people in abandoning the old ways. A fine book, I recommend it to all interested in Norse mythology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and Invigorating
Don't have much time to do a proper reveiw but I read this book this weekend and really liked it.

The stories are pure pulp and should satisfy any adventure book reader especially those who like the sagas or sword and sorcery.

The stories involve the Norse gods, sometimes as the protagonist or as a supporting character. They are all Viking Age settings.

These are original adventure stories and are not Asatru tales or yet another re-telling of the same stories you have read before.

5-0 out of 5 stars SUPERB FANTASY!
As publisher of WCB, I must admit that Everette Bell has done a wonderful job of bringing together several writers to tell their tales about Vikings and Gods... This book is much better than I anticipated! Some great stories, written in the "blood & guts" style of the pulp fiction masters, this is a book you won't be able to put down! And the exceptional cover art and design is worth the price of admission all by itself! For Mature Readers due to the violence involved (which is true to Viking lore), I can heartily recommend this book! ... Read more
