Excerpt: Yellowknife -Traditionally, First Nations people had occupied this region; by the 1930s they had a settlement on a point of land on the east side of Yellowknife Bay, Dettah. The current municipal area of Yellowknife was occupied by prospectors who ventured into the region in the mid-1930s. A Klondike-bound prospector, B.A. Blakeney, made the first discovery of gold in the Yellowknife Bay area in the late 19th century. The discovery was viewed as unimportant in those days because of the Klondike Gold Rush and because Great Slave Lake was too far away to attract attention. In the late 1920s, aircraft were first used to explore Canada's Arctic regions. Samples of uranium and silver were uncovered at Great Bear Lake in the early 1930s, and prospectors began fanning out to find additional metals. In 1933 two prospectors, Herb Dixon and Johnny Baker, canoed down the Yellowknife River from Great Bear Lake to survey for possible mineral deposits. They found gold samples at Quyta Lake, about 30 km (19 mi) up the Yellowknife River, and some additional samples at Homer Lake. The following year, Johnny Baker returned as part of a larger crew to develop the previous gold finds and search for more. Gold was found on the east side of Yellowknife Bay in 1934 and the short-lived Burwash Mine was developed. When government geologists uncovered gold in more favourable geology on the west side of Yellowknife Bay in the fall of 1935, a small staking rush occurred. Excerpt: The Coppermine Expedition of 18191822 had as its goal the exploration of the northern coast of Canada, which was accessed by way of the Coppermine River. The British expedition was organised by the Royal Navy as part of its attempt to discover and map the Northwest Passage. It was the first of three Arctic expeditions to be led by John Franklin, and also included George Back and John Richardson, both of whom would become significant Arctic explorers in their own right. The expedition was plagued by poor planning, bad luck and unreliable allies. The expected assistance from the local fur trading companies and native peoples was less forthcoming than expected, and the dysfunctional supply line, coupled with unusually harsh weather and the resulting absence of game, meant that the explorers were never far from starvation. Eventually the Arctic coast was reached, but barely 500 mi (800 km) had been explored before the exhaustion of the party's supplies and the onset of winter forced them to turn back. The expedition made a desperate retreat across uncharted territory in a state of starvation, often with nothing more than lichen to eat. enjoyable,... if only it were written by Aldous Huxley!
The book suffers from being far too personal, and lacks detail. Anecdotes abound, but they are, in toto, not particularly interesting or helpful ones, mostly along the lines of childhood vacations to the beach and thelike. After the first 25 pages I became frustrated with the fact that hisstory and ideas had progressed no further.Clearly a novelist of greatpotentials, he is nevertheless mistaken if he believes that an unconnectednarrative (with whole chapters almost reading like store catalogues) is thedefining characteristic of the time.But, once you get at least 50 pagesinto the book you will not stop reading it.The author sustains the plotwhile challenging us to consider reality and progress.

Murders, suicideand incest give a gothic aura to the tale, but then no one shouldunderestimate the horrors of that handful of half-cocked insights - thetype that flit through your head while brushing your teeth in the morning -that actually develop into a collection of oddly believable urban myths. You'll be surprised how many of them you've heard and believed to be true! Don't miss the chapterthat compares "The Wizard of Oz" withanarcho-capitalism.A good critique of government education is alsooffered as well as a two part section on monopolies.But, the authorshould read Hayek and then rewrite this book. For sure it would be betterthen and certainly more accurate, as one must know the meaning of the termbefore pronunciation becomes an issue.

The language was excessivelycomplex, but anyone interested in rationality and departures fromrationality, anyone who is fantastic at bringing sexual tension and themacabre to the surface of fairy tales and folklore, anyone who can enjoy an11-minute vacation and come back with something to think about, anyoneseriously interested in politics and theology, anyone that wishes tounderstand how the author thought about these problems should read thisbook. ... Comprehensive and up to date
This book was indispensible for my recent travels through Alberta. It contains detailed descriptions of all the best places to go, including some great small town festivals that I would of otherwise missed. The book also has many hikes included, mostly in the Canadian Rockies. I budgeted to spend around $50 a night for motels, and found that this book described many good choices in this price range but also includes campgrounds and more expensive places. Overall, I found it to be very current, not only for restaurants and the like but also coverage of issues such as overcrowding in the national parks, which I found an interesting addition.

5 Stars Plus!
This book and its companion volume to British Columbia are undoubtedly thebest travel books I have ever used. I just returned from a two-month tripthat took me to the Calgary Stampede, through the Rockies, up toYellowknife and through British Columbia to Vancouver. Alberta is anamazing place to visit and by buying this book I was able to enjoy it allthe more. The author has obviously done his homework and describes theregion in a colorful style but also with an incredible amount of detail. Byusing these books I managed to plan my trip before leaving home, even downto where I wanted to eat. The other guide I had with me was rarely used. Ialso found local information centers sending me along well worn touristpaths, and while this book covers all of that side of Alberta it also ledme away from the masses to areas of equal beauty. I highly recommend thisbook to anyone planning a trip to Canada!!

Don't travel without it!
This was an excellent guide for family travel.It provided first rate information on dinosaur adventures in the Red Deer region to Waterton NP to the Canadian Rockies including Banff and Jasper and all points in between.Includes tidbits of local history and written in such a user friendlymanner that by the middle of our three week adventure we were fondlyrefering to it as Mr. Moon, as in, what does Mr. Moon reccommend fordinner. If you are traveling to the Canadian Rockies, the British Colombiaguide by this publisher makes an indispensable companion to the AlbertaGuide.
