5-0 out of 5 stars Learn About Norway!
I have a new student from Norway in my class and was very happy that a A True Book was available about Norway.I have used this series about other countries and it allows students to better articulate facts about the country they come from and introduces the country to the other students. It is easy to read and contains interesting facts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Charming intro to Norway
This book provides younger children with a charming intro to Norway, combining simple information with beautiful photographs. Our children, aged 7, thoroughly enjoyed reading this book to learn more about the country, prior to the arrival of our Norwegian nanny. Since then, they have continued to pick it up and re-read the book. I personally enjoyed reading it, too, as it provided interesting information. I'd think it is especially good for kids ages 4-10. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
This book contains some stunning photographs that tell a story of the country and the Norwegian people. The fast facts and other tidbits of information about the geography, the people, politics and social issues made this an easy and educational read. This book is highly recommended for those intending to visit Norway, and particularly for those with distant ties to the Scandinavian countries.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed
Our church partners with a nursing home to give Christmas gifts to the residents.A women requested a Norwegian Landscape Picture Book. After doing a diligent search I settled on this book. The title, Norway in Pictures, Visual Geography, and photograph on the cover led me to believe that the book was full of stunning pictures of the countryside, cities, farms, mountains, and fjords,The book has photographs on most of the pages, some of them are of the landscape, others are of people, a few on the visual arts. The photographs are good, but nothing outstanding. With a country as beautiful as Norway this book did not do it justice. The book was very disappointing and I am surmising that the lady who will be receiving this gift will be sorely disappointed as well.Sadly, there is no time to select another book; had there been time, I would have returned this one immediately. ... Product Description
Norway's Spitsbergen Archipelago, known as Svalbard to the Norwegians, is of increasing interest to Arctic scholars and geographers, as well as to military historians and analysts of strategy. It was the farthest northern battleground between German and Allied forces in World War II, it became a political arena for Soviet and U.S. competition during the Cold War, it is now a field of conflict for fishing rights and cultural resource protection, and it serves as a laboratory for the study of global warming; this unique island group occupies a fascinating place in European, Russian, and American affairs.
Here, for the first time, is the complete report compiled by U.S. Intelligence at the beginning of World War II evaluating the islands both geographically and militarily, as well as a report on the archipelago produced by the CIA in 1950. This comprehensive report-never superseded in the years since-has been edited and introduced by P.J. Capelotti. It provides in great detail the American perspective on these islands and their strategic, economic, and geologic value. Maps and illustrations are included, some from the original report, some new. A glossary covers Arctic terms. ... Read more

Excerpt: Norway is a country located in Northern Europe on the western and northern part of the Scandinavian Peninsula, bordering the North Sea in southwest and the Skagerrak inlet to the south, the North Atlantic Ocean (Norwegian Sea) in the west and the Barents Sea to the northeast. Norway has a long land border with Sweden to the east, a shorter one with Finland in the northeast and a still shorter border with Russia in the far northeast. Norway has a very elongated shape, one of the longest and most rugged coastlines in the world, and some 50,000 islands off the much indented coastline. The mainland covers 13° latitude, from 58°N to more than 71°N, (Svalbard north to 81°N), and covers the longitude from 5°E in Solund to 31°E in Vardø (Jan Mayen to 9°W, Kvitøya to 33°E). Norway is one of the world's most northerly countries, and one of Europe's most mountainous countries with large areas dominated by the Scandinavian Mountains; average elevation is 460 m and 32% of the mainland is located above the tree line. The country-length chain of peaks is geologically continuous with the mountains of Scotland, Ireland and, crossing the Atlantic Ocean, the Appalachian Mountains of North America. Product Description

Culture and Customs of Norway provides an up-to-date view of Norway, showcasing a nation that is part of modern Europe, yet zealously maintains its own culture and identity. Providing the most current information on a broad range of topics—including cinema, literature, food, art, performing arts, and architecture—the book also places modern-day Norway in a historical context that makes it possible to understand how Norwegian culture came to be as it is today.

Readers will discover a nation that is a fascinating juxtaposition of advanced technology, especially in such fields as oil production and climate, and some of the most spectacular natural beauty in the world. They will read about such famous writers, artists, and composers as Henrik Ibsen, Edvard Munch, and Edvard Grieg. And they will discover how Norway confronts the challenges of modern society without sacrificing its social-democratic philosophy of social justice and shared responsibility, both at home and globally.

Excerpt: Southern Norway -The name and modern concept of this part of the country considered as a separate region, was introduced as late as 1902 by the local author Wilhelm Krag. Before this, the area was considered part of Western Norway. Southern Norway coincides roughly with the historic petty kingdom of Agder. Occasionally, adjacent parts of the county of Rogaland and Telemark might be considered part of this region, as well. If defined as an informal region, Southern Norway is perhaps more properly defined as the Skagerrak coastal belt, thus excluding the inland valleys to the north.
