5-0 out of 5 stars Great way to introduce children to Norway
I bought this book for our children prior to the arrival of our Norwegian nanny. The book is delightful with wonderful photographs and illustrations. It includes just enough information to pique the imagination & interest of younger children and create a springboard for further studies or exploration of the country for older kids. It covers everything from geography to weather, to the lives of children in Norway, to a short history, to food, to customs, to holidays, to architecture and art. It also has a simple craft project, a guide to some Norwegian words and a reference guide to other books. My kids really enjoyed the book and learned a lot. In fact, the whole family did. I would think this book is appropriate for kids ages 4-10, though even older kids would benefit. ... Read more

Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: North Cape (Norwegian: Nordkapp) is a cape on the island of Magerøya in northern Norway, in the municipality of Nordkapp. Its 307 m high, steep cliff is often referred to as the northernmost point of Europe, located at , 2102.3 km from the North Pole. However, the neighbouring point Knivskjellodden is actually 1,457 metres further north. Moreover, both of these points are situated on an island, which means the northernmost point of mainland Europe is in fact Cape Nordkinn (Kinnarodden), about 20 km from the village of Mehamn on Nordkinn Peninsula. The North Cape is the point where the Norwegian Sea, part of the Atlantic Ocean, meets the Barents Sea, part of the Arctic Ocean. Map of North Cape, Knivskjellodden and KinnaroddenThe North Cape was named by English explorer Richard Chancellor in 1553 when he passed the cape in the search for a Northeast passage. From then on, it was occasionally visited by daring explorers who climbed the steep cliff face to the plateau; famous visitors include King Oscar II of Sweden and Norway in 1873 and Thailand's King Chulalongkorn in 1907. A road was opened to the North Cape in 1956. Today, the North Cape is a major tourist attraction. Access to the final few hundred metres leading to the North Cape itself requires purchase of a ticket costing 215 NOK per person (the Knivskjellodden can be reached free of charge on foot). Inside the restricted area is the Nordkapphallen, an extensive commercial tourist centre that houses a number of exhibits on the Cape's history. There is also the possibility of becoming a member of the Royal North Cape Club (RNCC). Th...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=702977 ... Read more

Product Description
A discussion of the political system of Norway focusing on political parties, democracy and accountability in one of the richest countries in the world that still is anchored in an egalitarian culture with a strong local base and facing the challenge of a dynamic Europeization process.

Politics in Norway shares many characteristics with other smaller West European countries, in particular its Scandinavian neighbors: It is a stable parliamentary, multi-party system with a strong social-democratic tradition. But Norwegian politics has its own profile which is brought out by three central and persistent themes in Norwegian politics: Norway is a small and young state in the European periphery, its politics operates within an egalitarian social structure and it is marked by the political strength of the periphery.

The old project of nation-building-so eagerly pursued in Norway through the 19th and most of the 20th century-is in the post Cold War era mainly challenged from the outside.

In spite of fashionable arguments about "globalization", "Americanization" and the "communication revolution" this has not primarily been manifested in the economic and cultural fields. The major challenge has been political and presented by the dynamism of the European Union. The EU has forced politicians and voters alike to reconsider the very foundation of the Norwegian nation state. The "national question" today is not about secession, rebellion and multi-national state building-like in 19th century Europe. It is about building viable political, economic and cultural arrangements to sustain democracy, prosperity and a "Norwegian" way of life inside the new "European House", but so far outside the EU itself. ... Excerpt: Rosfjord is a fjord in the Norwegian municipality of Lyngdal. The harbour of Agnefest has a history going back at least to 1771. Because of the high salinity of the water the fjord rarely freezes, making it a suitable harbour. At the bottom of the fjord lies Rosfjord Beach, where there is both a campsite and a hotel. Commercial camping on the site goes back to 1934. In the 1970s several cottages were built, and the hotelRosfjord Strandhotelldates from 1986. ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=22588380 ... Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Norway," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Norway in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Norway when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Norway, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more
