Product Description
This work is a must for anyone travelling abroad. As the first phrasebook ever to appear in a 'map' format, what better guided tour could there be through the experiences of travelling in a foreign language? Also the perfect stocking filler, bon voyage gift, thank you, or party gift. A patented lamination process allows Language Maps to fold and unfold in a snap without tearing in addition to being durable, weatherproof, compact, sturdy, easy to use, and much lighter and discreet than a dictionary or phrasebook. It contains over 1000 words and phrases split into important sections, covering the basics for any trip. Language Maps are so beautifully illustrated that all travellers will be proud to use them in any setting, whether dining in an expensive restaurant or buying tickets to a museum. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Packaging might not match contents
To me this looks like an impulse item at a bookstore. It consists of 4 double sided panels -- encased in plastic. Cute pictures and attractive layout.

But the contents are quite limited. There are several categories of phrases, including Time, Calendar, Shopping, Life's little emergencies, Hotels and room service. I compare the quantity of useful phrases to something like Berlitz or other phrase books, and I fail to see how this 'map' measures up.

The few errors and typos (e.g., the spelling of søndag 'Sunday as sondag --yes that little line throughthe o matters! -- , 'mit pass' instead of mitt pass 'my passport', til Kanada instead of til Canada 'to Canada', kreditkort instead of kredittkort, "Snill" in the common expression vær så snill misspelled) will not hinder comprehension. But really ensuring that these few pages are correct would not be at all a bad idea. One more petty complaint: The English phrase is "I'm from the U.S.A." and the Norwegian should match USA, but uses "Amerika". Better to have the two phrases match.

I find this "Pronunciation tip" amusing:: "Pronounce the phonetics just as you see them. Don't over-analyze them... Speak with a Norwegian accent, and, above all, enjoy yourself." The phonetic guides provided are as good and as bad as most in phrase books. ... Read more

Product Description

Compact Norwegian, a stand-alone 10-lesson (5 hours) program, teaches beginning language strategies for essential communication and traveling needs.

HEAR IT, LEARN IT, SPEAK IT®

What is the Pimsleur® difference?

The Pimsleur Method provides the most effective language-learning program ever developed. The Pimsleur Method gives you quick command of Norwegian structure without tedious drills. Learning to speak Norwegian can actually be enjoyable and rewarding.

The key reason most people struggle with new languages is that they aren't given proper instruction, only bits and pieces of a language. Other language programs sell only pieces -- dictionaries; grammar books and instructions; lists of hundreds or even thousands of words and definitions; audios containing useless drills. They leave it to you to assemble these pieces as you try to speak. Pimsleur enables you to spend your time learning to speak the language rather than just studying its parts.

When you were learning English, could you speak before you knew how to conjugate verbs? Of course you could. That same learning process is what Pimsleur replicates. Pimsleur presents the whole language as one integrated piece so you can succeed.

With Pimsleur you get:

Grammar and vocabulary taught together in everyday conversation,

Interactive audio-only instruction that teaches spoken language organically,

The flexibility to learn anytime, anywhere,

30-minute lessons designed to optimize the amount of language you can learn in one sitting.

Millions of people have used Pimsleur to gain real conversational skills in new languages quickly and easily, wherever and whenever -- without books, written exercises, or drills. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars the best way to be introduced in a new language
You will practise a language anywere and when you realize yo will be talking like a norwegian. It's the first step if you are interested to study in depth.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Course
I've tried several languages courses and am very pleased with this interactive design!!!It's very simple and the thirty minute sessions are over before you know it!
Ha det bra!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great&conveniant for learning oral aspect of language
I love this! I listen to it every day on my way to work. It focuses more on the oral aspect of the language, but it does have a booklet that has a page for each section to learn how to pronounce things. It is easy, and the speakers you're learning from speak at a normal rate(not too fast, not too slow) to get a realistic idea of how native speakers communicate. I found I remembered everything I learned after each lesson too, which is a first. I would definitely recommend this to anybody who wants to jump right in and learn a language who's limited on time/patience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best audio language program out there
Pimsleur is the best language program out there that I have ever found.I have used their Norwegian, Japanese, Russian, Greek and Mandarin programs, and been very happy with them.

You will not be fluent after doing just this set, but it will definitely get you started.

4-0 out of 5 stars Speak slower!
These Pimsleur CDs are great to learn some basics before going to non-English speaking country. You learn good things like "thank you", "excuse me", and of course "I don't understand Norwegian". Some of the more advanced lessons were not very helpful like saying I want to eat at your house. They also got faster with each lesson. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars does the author know Norwegian?
Does the author, who is apparently an English professor and married to a Norwegian, know Norwegian? From the looks of this volume, I'd guess 'no.' Does he have access to a Norwegian spell checker? I guess not. Did the publishers ask someone who does know Norwegian to proofread. Doesn't seem like it.

The spelling errors are legion. The choice of words to define is humorous at times, as are the definitions themselves. My favorite word he defines is "klunkeflaske" -- akevitt decanter that clucks when poured (p. 48). I don't use this word very often. Would you?:

The walking tour of Oslo is probably the best part of the book, but definitely does not make it any kind of good value.

Sure it's cheap, and surprisingly available in many physical bookstores (Hippocrene seems to excel at distributing its books!), but you can do much better, no matter which other dictionary you buy.

The only good use I've been able to come up with for the book is for a Norwegian class to take it on as a project to edit and corrent the contents. It would build up the students' confidence to see how much better they do than a published book!

Email me if you want more details, but don't waste your money. ... Read more

Product Description
Norwegian Modals is a detailed description of the syntactic and semantic properties of modals in Norwegian. Modal verbs in Mainland Scandinavian languages have received much less attention than their English and German counterparts, hence this book seizes the opportunity to present a range of new data and generalizations relevant for the study of Scandinavian languages, but also for the study of modality in Germanic and other languages. The book critically evaluates a range of proposals from the modality literature, focusing on the Theta-properties and the scopal properties of Modals in Germanic languages, and concludes that none of these previous proposals are able to account for the syntax of modals in Norwegian. The Theta-properties of modals are shown to depend on the construction in which the modal occurs, hence neither a raising analysis, a control analysis, nor a raising-versus-control analysis in fact suffices to exhaust these properties of Norwegian modals. The interplay of modals with tense and aspect is likewise thoroughly investigated, presenting a range of data revealing that existing universalist proposals are insufficient to account for even quite regular patterns. Instead, a new analysis is presented, building on a new compositional tense system which exploits aspectual features of predicates and selectional preferences of modal classes. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pronunciation made easy
I work in a travel store and speak Norwegian. Through work and personal interest, I have investigated several Norwegian phrase books. In my opinion, the Eyewitness Norwegian Phrase Book is the best I've seen.Itdoes not assume the reader knows what sounds the phonetic symbols representthe way many phrase books (like Berlitz) do, yet the pronunciation guidewill have the traveler speaking to Norwegians just as well. ...
