Excerpt: Canadian English, Canadian French Black Nova Scotians are people of Black African descent, whose ancestors fled Colonial America as slaves or freemen, to settle in Nova Scotia, Canada during the 18th and 19th centuries. According to the 2006 Census of Canada, there are 19,230 black people currently living in Nova Scotia, most of whom live in Halifax. Like African Americans, the average Black Canadian living in Nova Scotia is estimated to be of 17% European ancestry. The first recorded instance of a black presence in Canada was that of Mathieu de Costa. Da Costa arrived in Nova Scotia sometime between 1603 and 1608 as a translator for the French explorer Pierre Dugua, Sieur de Monts. The first known black person to live in Canada was a slave from Madagascar named Olivier Le Jeune (who may also have been of partial Malay ancestry). An increasing number of immigrants from Africa have been coming to Canada, as is also the case in the United States and Europe. This includes large numbers of refugees, but also many skilled workers pursuing better economic conditions. Many black Canadians today are of Caribbean origin, with some of recent African origin and smaller numbers from Latin American countries. However, a sizable number of Black Canadians who descended from freed American slaves can be found in Nova Scotia and parts of Southwestern Ontario. The end of the American War of Independence led the Black Loyalists to flee what was becoming the United States of America, many being relocated in the British colony of Nova Scotia, Canada. Following Dunmore's Proclamation, the British authorities in Amer...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=9779225 ... Read more

Product Description
The music of Canada has reflected the diverse influences that have shaped the country. aboriginals, the French, and the British have all made unique contributions to the musical heritage of Canada. The music has subsequently been heavily influenced by American culture because of its proximity and migration between the two countries. Since French explorer Samuel de Champlain arrived in 1605 and established the first permanent Canadian settlements at Port Royal and Quebec City in 1608, the country has produced its own composers, musicians and ensembles. From the 17th century onward Canada has developed a music infrastructure, that includes church halls, chamber halls, conservatories, academies, performing arts centers, record companys, radio stations and television music video channels. ... Product Description
The popular conception of Nova Scotians as a pure, simple, idyllic people is false, argues Ian McKay. In "The Quest of the Folk" he shows how the province's tourism industry and cultural producers manipulated and refashioned the cultural identity of the region and its people to project traditional folk values. McKay offers an in-depth analysis of the infusion of a folk ideology into the art and literature of the region and the use of the idea of the 'Simple Life' in tourism promotion. He examines how Nova Scotia's cultural history was rewritten to erase evidence of an urban, capitalist society, class and ethnic differences, and women's emancipation. In doing so, he sheds new light on the roles of Helen Creighton, the Maritime region's most famous folklorist, and Mary Black, an influential handicrafts revivalist, in creating this false identity. ... Product Description
Drawing on theories of postmodernist feminism and transnational migration, this book explores the lived experiences and migration narratives of seven Arab immigrant women in Halifax, Nova Scotia. By examining the gendered meanings and interactions which underpin discourses of family, community and citizenship in the womens lives, the author draws a diverse map of personal experiences of home and belonging in the Canadian and Maritime context. As migration shifts the terrain of patriarchy in various and often uneven ways, Abdul-Razzaq discusses how the women encounter new structural, social and gendered barriers and opportunities once in the host country.Simultaneously however, attachments to the sending country continue to contour the research subject's everyday experiences. Adopting an in-depth qualitative investigation of belonging, Abdul-Razzaq's ethnographic accounts effectively demonstrate how the process of migration creates important sites of difference and negotiation through which the women actively navigate their identities as immigrants/newcomers, citizens, workers, daughters, wives, and mothers. ...
