Editorial Review

Product Description

Reflecting on two different communities that have been displaced throughout history, this outline reveals the harsh treatment suffered by both the Mi’kmaq people and the African Nova Scotians. Highlighting how the Mi’kmaq were dispossessed of their lands and, since the early 1820s, confined to reserves, this in-depth exploration also shows how the African Nova Scotians have been robbed of their homes—settlements that were originally granted to them by white colonial governments. In spite of this common ground, this emboldened examination sheds light on these cultures’ distinct ideas regarding several concepts, thereby illustrating what draws them together and what keeps them apart. The role of the Human Rights Commission is also explored along with crucial aspects of cultural identity, including interviews with citizens from both groups. Providing an innovative assessment of ethnic relations and indigenous studies, this is an invaluable source of constructive dialogue on these aspects within the history of colonialism.

Product Description
The crafts have long occupied a marginal role in Modernist discourse. Neo Craft challenges this assumption with a wide selection of scholarly essays exploring the historical and contemporary positions that the crafts hold within visual culture. This volume is divided into five central themes, the last of which, Craft, the Senses and New Technologies, envisions an innovative future for the crafts. Drawing on their scholarship in the fields of craft history, art history, philosophy, museum studies, anthropology, fashion theory, history, women's studies and design, an international group of leading scholars, craftspeople and curators--including Grace Cochrane, Elizabeth Cumming, Tanya Harrod, Janice Helland, David Howard, David Howes, Love Jonsson, Beverly Lemire, Joseph McBrinn, Bruce Metcalf, B. Lynne Milgram, Alla Myzelev, John Potvin, Mike Press and Larry Shiner--are brought together to contextualize the cultural, political and economic issues facing the crafts today. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars interesting collection of college-level essays
This book is aimed at an academic audience, and definitely not at someone reading about crafts for fun. It isn't eye candy, and it reads like a collection of academic journal articles. The essays are a diverse bunch, but hold together well under the broad topic of the ways crafts are generally considered by the art world, craft practitioners, and broader society, and the roles that crafts play in societies. This attitude would be encapsulated by Howes's section (p216) on how the term "Basket Weaving 101" has come to be a derogatory term for an easy, introductory university course. Yet Howes uses this very process of basket weaving to describe both our own society's privileging of sight over touch, and the complex social relations, cosmology and pedagogy of the Desana Indians of the Colombian Amazon. I particularly liked Section One, with Metcalf's essay on "Replacing the myth of modernism" and Shiner's "The fate of craft". These would be of enormous interest to anyone studying, writing about, or practicing in a medium traditionally situated on the craft side of the art/craft binary.

I personally won't be adding this to my collection: a library loan was enough for me to get everything I wanted from the book, and I would suggest checking it out at the library first if possible.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting & Relevant
This is a really nice collection of essays--not necessarily an "easy" read but well worth it.

Product Description
In 3 Works, photographer and critic Martha Rosler braids together three classic, newly relevant pieces tracing the ways in which photographyís aesthetic conventions and social practices fail or succeed in generating socially meaningful work--work that not only takes into account the political conditions within which it was produced and assumes social and political responsibility but also activates the viewer. The title three works are The Restoration of High Culture in Chile, a 1972 short fiction piece-cum-essay that examines the degrees of political anaesthesia and corruption a successful adaptation to high culture implies, The Bowery in two inadequate descriptive systems,/ a 1974 photo work in which contemporary urban photographyís capacity to continue documentary photographyís historical work is questioned, and in, around, and afterthoughts, a 1981 critical essay exploring these questions more systematically and attempting to develop criteria to define contemporary photographic activities as meaningful social practice. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Quillwork on Birch Bark
I had one years ago.
I used it until it fell apart.
I just had to get another.
Great Book!
Fantastic pictures!
I use it all the time when I teach quillwork.
If it cost twice as much, it would still be cheap.
A must have book.
