Product Description
This text provides the graduate student with a systematic guide to unravelling structural information from the NMR spectra of unknown synthetic and natural compounds.

A brief introduction gives an overview of the basic principles and elementary instrumental methods of NMR. This is followed by instructional strategy and tactical advice on how to translate spectra into meaningful structural information. The book provides the student with 55 sets of spectra of graduated complexity. These are designed to challenge the student's problem-solving abilities by the introduction of new concepts with each group of problems, followed by possible solutions and full explanations. A formula index of solutions is provided at the end of the text.

This third edition, following on from the second (a reprint of the first edition with corrections), presents significant new material. Thus, actual methods of two-dimensional NMR such as some inverse techniques of heteronuclear shift correlation, as well as the detection of proton-proton connectivities and nuclear Overhauser effects are included. To demonstrate the applications of these methods, new problems have replaced those of previous editions. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for advanced use
I purchased this item when I was in the middle of my master studies. My course was organic synthesis. NMR spectroscopy is quite advanced in this field. I was expecting a guide about the steps one has to take to evaluate an NMR spectra an conclude to a structure. Or at least a discussion, a plan one should set up to organize all the possible information collected through NMR spectra. When I received the book I realized I was about one year ahead of the level of information it could supply me with. It is a great book for undergraduate studies, or for students/scientists who won't come across complicated structures. I would say it is for begginers in organic chemistry (as it contains many unsolved problems, so it's great for practice) and advanced students in other fiels.

I hope you find this review helpful!

5-0 out of 5 stars The ONE required book on NMR spectroscopy!
The long and incredibly productive career of Richard Ernst could be said to have written most of this book.It is difficult to overstate his constribution to the field of NMR spectroscopy. In this seminal work, Dr. Ernst along with his co-authors andcollaborators Bodenhausen and Wokaun draw on a vast base of knowledge to describe NMR spectroscopy in a clear understandable fashion for the newest student.Yet, this volume is packed with detail to satisfy even the most strigent graduate exam. The first chapter is an introduction to operator formalism which provides the theoretical framework for the discussion NMR experiments in 1- and 2- dimensions. The subsequent chapter on 1-D FT spectroscopy contains a depth of information lacking in many other treatments. This is followed by a clear discussion of multi-quantum transitions which are explored in full in the chapters on 2-D spectroscopy. The fourth chapter on the formation of 2-D spectra is the most complete I've seen to date. It should be since Ernst and his lab did much to shape the nature of 2-D spectroscopy. This is followed by three chapters elaborating on different aspects and areas of application of 2-D NMR spectroscopy. Finally chapter 8 is dedicated to NMR imaging which was changed in no small part by Dr. Ernst's contributions. This book should be on the shelf of any professional or student whose business is to know NMR spectrscopy. Physicists, spin-engineers, and physical chemists need this book if they are to study the fundamentals of NMR spectroscopy. ... Read more

Product Description
Rather than attempting, in vain, to reflect all the rapid and dramatic developments that occur in the field of radiation chemistry, it provides a point of entry into the field and gives readers a broad and current overview from which their own areas of interest may be further explored. With an approach that is both academically rigorous and eminently practical, it promotes understanding of the fundamental principles underlying the action of radiation on matter. Both the methodology and the industrial applications are clearly stated, and the Third Edition now utilizes SI units to assist students in relating radiation exposure and absorbed dose to radiation chemical yields. Among other improvements, the final chapter on applied radiation chemistry and radiation processing has been expanded to give fuller coverage of chemical reactions initiated by high-energy radiation and their commercial uses. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent NMR book for the ones 'in between'
Lambert and Mazzola's NMR book strikes a nice balance between the weighty tomes aimed at NMR specialists, and the structure-determination only books aimed purely at synthetic organic chemists. For someone like me, who is interested in the experimental and technical aspects of the NMR spectrometer and of NMR spectroscopy, but only because he wants to run good, clean NMR experiments, this book is marvelous. Lambert combines concise and clear discussions of key concepts like relaxation, NOEs, phase cycling, and processing parameters, with succint and illustrative examples. One of the unique aspects of this book is the listing of ballpark parameters for many experiments including ones like mixing times, no. of scans, relaxation times etc. For all parameters, the essential things, and those essential things which you have to watch out for, are both carefully explained.
Lambert's book is a very useful tool for those chemists who are 'in between'- that is,those who want to do structure determination themselves and also learn the practical and fine points of spectral acquisition as well as processing, without too much detail, either instrumental or mathematical. Lambert and Mazzola give us just the right amount. A must have on the shelf of any scientist interested in NMR. ... Read more

Product Description

Molecular Physical Chemistry: A Concise Introduction focuses on two main aspects of physical chemistry: thermodynamics and reaction dynamics. By looking at the properties of the atoms and molecules that constitute matter, it makes use of results from modern experiments conducted on small numbers of molecules. These molecular properties allow the behaviour of larger groups of molecules to be predicted. This is in contrast to conventional approaches which are based upon how the subjects have developed historically. It attempts to show how some basic concepts can be easily applied to give verifiable results in simple systems before extending them to more complicated scenarios.

The text is intended as an aid to understanding these central topics of physical chemistry, rather than an introduction to them, and some familiarity with them is assumed throughout. Worked examples and problems are given at the end of each chapter. Molecular Physical Chemistry: A Concise Introduction will be welcomed by graduate and advanced undergraduate students, as well as lecturers. Upon completion of this book the reader will see its subject matter as an integral part of their whole approach to chemistry.

This is a gem of a book. It comprehensively covers the subject and is a pleasure to read. I highly recommend it for courses on photochemistry and for practitioners in all areas of the photosciences. Having been afforded the opportunity to comment on sections of the book prior to its publication, I am well aware of the care that went into providing the accurate and up to date descriptions of physical concepts and reaction mechanisms that are the hallmark of this book. The knowledge explosion that occurred in the course of the preceding half century has led some to conclude that the photochemistry of organic molecules is a mature field. By describing the intricacies of photophysical and photochemical responses of a cornucopia of selected molecules this book dispels this notion. ... Read more
