Product Description
This book reinvestigates and analyses, in various aspects and details, the scientific basis of an up-to-date 'nuclear culture' and presents the basic and outstanding problems of this field, with its important technical and social applications and consequences. The contributions are presented by leading experts in this area and the fundamental approaches related to nuclear fission and fusion have been considered and covered. In the light of public opinion regarding nuclear energy as a whole, after the Chernobyl accident, the various items, including safety and ecological problems, are treated beyond the political and social misunderstandings due to ideological and fashionable interferences. The resulting collection of papers therefore satisfy the double need of maintaining a high scientific standard and of presenting the data and the facts in such a way that they can be understood, in their essential aspects, by a more general audience. ... Product Description
This ringbound book and DVD-ROM disc set provides a comprehensive guide to the National Ignition Facility, the world s largest laser system, housed in a ten-story building at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. NIF s 192 laser beams are capable of delivering at least 60 times more energy than any previous laser system. NIF will focus up to 1.8 million joules of ultraviolet laser energy on a tiny target in the center of its ten-meter-diameter target chamber creating conditions similar to those that exist only in the cores of stars and hydrogen bombs. The resulting fusion reaction will release many times more energy than the laser energy required to initiate the reaction. Experiments conducted on NIF will make significant contributions to national and global security, could lead to practical fusion energy, and will help the nation maintain its leadership in basic science and technology. Contents of the ringbound book include the National Ignition Campaign Execution Plan and descriptive documents about the NIF complex, timeline, by the numbers, how NIF works, the seven wonders of NIF, maintaining the nuclear weapons stockpile, the promise of limitless energy, LIFE and the concept of clean energy from nuclear waste, photo science and applications, and more.DVD-ROM: The electronic book on DVD-ROM provides an unprecedented encyclopedic collection of documents, official reference books and guides, images, and videos about every conceivable aspect of nuclear fusion technology and research. We believe that this exceptional collection provides the most comprehensive set of government fusion documents ever offered. Programs and topics covered include ITER (formerly known as the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) currently under construction in France designed to achieve burning plasmas; NIF - the National Ignition Facility and Photon Science project at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California; the Laser Inertial Fusion Engine (LIFE) concept; research into magnetic fusion energy (MFE) and tokamaks; inertial fusion energy; plasma science; simulation; physics; high energy density physics, FESAC reports; nuclear core design; tritium; remote handling technology; creating predictable high-performance steady-state plasmas; fusion-fission hybrid systems; the history of fusion technology; earlier projects such as AIRES, FIRE, NSTX, NSCX, JET, Z-pinch, TFTR, and many others; plus legacy material from 2002 and earlier. The collection includes nearly 400 PDF files and 14 video files. Nuclear fusion - the process that powers the sun - offers an environmentally benign, intrinsically safe energy source with an abundant supply of low-cost fuel. it is the focus of an international research program, including the ITER fusion collaboration, which involves seven parties representing half the world's population. The realization of fusion power would change the economics and ecology of energy production as profoundly as petroleum exploitation did two centuries ago. The 21st century finds fusion research in a transformed landscape. The worldwide fusion community broadly agrees that the science has advanced to the point where an aggressive action plan, aimed at the remaining barriers to practical fusion energy, is warranted. At the same time, and largely because of its scientific advance, the program faces new challenges; above all it is challenged to demonstrate the timeliness of its promised benefits. The main advantages of producing power from fusion reactions are well known: essentially inexhaustible, low-cost fuel, available worldwide; high energy-density of fuel, allowing straightforward base-load power production without major transportation costs; no production of greenhouse gas, soot or acid rain; no possibility of runaway reaction or meltdown that could pose a risk to public safety. ... Excerpt: Fusion Energy Foundation (FEF) was a non-profit think tank cofounded by Lyndon LaRouche in 1974 in New York. It promoted the construction of nuclear power plants, research into fusion power and beam weapons and other causes. The FEF was called fusion's greatest private supporter. It was praised by scientists like John Clarke, who said that the fusion community owed it a "debt of gratitude". By 1980, its main publication, Fusion, claimed 80,000 subscribers. The FEF included notable scientists and others on its boards, along with LaRouche movement insiders in management positions. It published a popular magazine, Fusion, and a more technical journal as well as books and pamphlets. It conducted seminars and its members testified at legislative hearings. It was known for soliciting subscriptions to their magazines in U.S. airports, where its confrontational methods resulted in conflicts with celebrities and the general public. The FEF has been described by many writers as a "front" for the U.S. Labor Party and the LaRouche movement. By the mid-1980s, the FEF was being accused of fraudulent fundraising on behalf of other LaRouche entities. Federal prosecutors forced it into bankruptcy in 1986 to collect contempt of court fines. Key personnel were convicted in 1988. According to an article in The Nation, the Fusion Energy Foundation had physicists, corporate executives, and government planners on its board of advisors, many unaware of the foundations connection to the U.S. Labor Party, while the board of directors was filled with LaRouche movement regulars and some party outsiders. A 1983 report published by The Heritage Foundation said that the foundation briefly gained the confi...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=23391020 ... Read more

Product Description
Nuclear fusion is considered to have great potential for supplying long term energy demands. The aim of this book is to consider the technological, ecological and economic questions related to the commercial development of fusion plasmas as an energy source. The authors have examined these questions in the light of current developments of specific sources without assuming that any particular source will necessarily be used commercially. Aspects which cannot be considered without reference to a specific source have been related to the tokamak reactor with deuterium-tritium plasma since this reactor is currently one of the most advanced in terms of development. Individual chapters consider the basic principles of fusion reactions and the requirements for utilizing this power for energy production, the main components of a tokamak reactor and the economic and energy parameters concerned with the development of such a reactor for commercial use. Obviously these concepts cannot be discussed without considering safety implications and these are assessed in Chapter 4.Potential fuels are compared in the subsequent chapter and the book concludes with an assessment of the development and future and nuclear fusion as an energy source. The authors have drawn on their combined practical and technical experience to provide a complete picture of the current state of play in the nuclear fusion field. Their analysis provides a complete description of the parameters involved in assessing and comparing nuclear fusion as an alternative to the more conventional forms of energy production. ... Product Description
With accessible writing, Neal Singer introduces young readers to what fusion is--and isn't. He explains the ways scientists have approached and developed fusion and discusses its advantages over other forms of energy production.

Mention nuclear fusion--the joining of two light atoms to form a heavier one--and most people think of bombs. But fusion has other uses, too. Inside an encapsulated space at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, New Mexico, scientists test the Z Machine, a pulsed power structure that uses electricity and magnetism to produce nuclear fusion. Although much of the research has focused on the development of nuclear weaponry, the Z Machine may also help scientists find a way to harness fusion energy in order to provide clean, renewable energy to the world's growing population. ... Product Description
In 1960, following a request from General de Gaulle, the Compagnie Générale d Electricité (CGE) decided to create a research center at Marcoussis. It was there that Jean Robieux discovered that concentrating a short laser impulse on a small sphere resulted in creating a high temperature within dense matter. This made it possible to obtain fusion of the nuclei and a new method of producing energy made its appearance. A proposal to undertake research in order to reach this objective was transmitted to General de Gaulle on November 26, 1962. He approved the idea, and work began immediately. André Brin, Director of the Département de Physique Générale de Limeil of the Direction des Applications Militaires (DAM) of the Commissariat à l Energie Atomique (CEA) was in charge of this task. The research centre of CGE, at Marcoussis had to make the lasers for the experiments carried out at Limeil. In 1967, the lasers built at Marcoussis were thirty times more powerful than those in the rest of the world. The President of the United States asked France for help in this area: this was immediately granted by General de Gaulle. Thus began the co-operative relationship that continues to this day. In 1969 Limeil achieved a laser fusion experiment which was of great importance. Jean Robieux shows why it is practically certain that towards 2080, laser nuclear fusion will enable us to produce abundant pollution-free electrical energy at a reasonable cost. If the crucial decisions are taken rapidly and a high enough level, this objective could probably be reached sooner. The action of this electrical energy on matter, for example a mixture of CO2 and H2, would enable us to produce liquid or easily liquefiable fuels. We would not have to use oil or gas and the greenhouse effect would cease. This energy would also enable us to produce great quantities of food. Today this is done using energy from the sun. Laser fusion would use the energy contained in the mass of Deuterium, an element found everywhere. Obtaining energy from such a common source could lead to the end of hunger in the world. Laser nuclear fusion would enable mankind to live for countless millennia without having to worry about global warming or hunger. ... Read more
