Product Description

What influences have changed Canadian nuclear policy over the past twenty years? What will be the future issues of choice and change?Focusing on the federal government, but with special attention given to key changes in Ontario - Canada's main nuclear province - the analytical core of this book identifies five key nuclear energy choices and challenges that face the federal government and other Canadian policy makers: Who is responsible for nuclear R&D and waste management? What models of regulation will govern nuclear energy's future? What are Canada's prospects for, and commitments surrounding, the marketing of CANDU reactors abroad? Is a renewed Federal-Ontario nuclear partnership likely? Can there be said to be a growing trust level between the Canadian public and the institutions that govern nuclear energy in Canada, and abroad?

Linking changes in Canada with broader comparative change in the United States, United Kingdom and Germany, as well countries such as South Korea and China, which have purchased CANDU reactors from Canada, the author's conclude that Canada's nuclear future is one of precarious opportunity and federal nuclear policy must learn to come to terms with a much broader range of issues and actors than ever before. ... Product Description
This book reinvestigates and analyses, in various aspects and details, the scientific basis of an up-to-date 'nuclear culture' and presents the basic and outstanding problems of this field, with its important technical and social applications and consequences. The contributions are presented by leading experts in this area and the fundamental approaches related to nuclear fission and fusion have been considered and covered. In the light of public opinion regarding nuclear energy as a whole, after the Chernobyl accident, the various items, including safety and ecological problems, are treated beyond the political and social misunderstandings due to ideological and fashionable interferences. The resulting collection of papers therefore satisfy the double need of maintaining a high scientific standard and of presenting the data and the facts in such a way that they can be understood, in their essential aspects, by a more general audience. ... Product Description
Global energy demand is likely to rise substantially by the mid-21st century. At the same time, the use of fossil fuels may need to be severely curtailed to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases. Nuclear power is one of the few options that meet these conflicting requirements. However, its potential to do so is an issue of wide disagreement and high emotions, with balanced information hard to find. This text, the culmination of a two-year study, provides a dispassionate and objective assessment of the major disputes on the future role of this controversial fuel. Decisionmakers and their advisers, as well as proponents and opponents of the fuel, should find that this book provides clarification of the main issues influencing the future of nuclear energy: relative economics, public perceptions and the process of decisionmaking, nuclear research and development, waste management, reprocessing and proliferation, nuclear safety and nuclear power and the Kyoto Protocol. In the light of the many uncertainties in the field of energy, the relevance of these issues can only continue to grow. ... Read more

Product Description
Limiting Emissions will result in Investment in the UK’s Nuclear Energy Sector

Summary

The Climate Change Act 2008 makes the UK the first country in the world to have a legally binding long-term framework to reduce carbon emissions. This act also establishes a legal framework for building adaptability to climate change. The climate change bill was passed in the UK’s parliament in November 2007, and was enacted by Royal Assent in November 2008. The bill was introduced to have a clear, credible, long-term framework for the UK to achieve its targets of reducing carbon dioxide emissions and ensure that necessary steps are taken towards adapting to the impacts of climate change. The UK was the first country in the world to show its interest in launching climate change. The country committed to climate change by setting huge targets and pursuing ambitious policies both domestically and internationally. The UK has already shown progress in reducing domestic emissions and planning strategies to reach emission targets by 2050. The introduction of the climate change bill and steps planned to reduce emissions will make the country to become a low-carbon economy over a period of time. However, this will be possible only by increasing the nuclear power share in the country’s total power generated during the period 2010-2050. Nuclear power is considered to be safe, reliable and cost effective while producing no greenhouse gas emissions directly from electricity generation. Nuclear power plays a key role in achieving the emissions targets set by the UK resulting in huge investments in building the new nuclear power generation facilities.

Scope

  • The report discusses the UK's Climate Change Act 2008 and its impact on the growth of the nuclear industry
  • The report highlights the Carbon Budgeting and the UK’s carbon emission reduction targets
  • The report analyzes the importance of the UK’s carbon emission reduction targets in understanding the investment opportunities in the country
Reasons to buy

The report will enhance your decision making capability in a more rapid and time sensitive manner. It will allow you to:
  • Gain understanding of the UK’s carbon emission reduction targets.

Product Description
The transformation of mammalian cells in vitro provides quantitative and qualitative information on the processes by which physical and chemical agents induce malignancy. Recently, there has been considerable progress on the developmnent of new cell transformation systems and the role of oncogenes in cell transformation. An International Workshop held during April 1989 in Dublin encouraged collaborative interactions between the scientists working in this field and provided a forum for critical review of current research results. Cell Transformation and Radiation-induced Cancer is a record of the papers presented at the Workshop. It includes work which focuses on the potential of emerging human cell transformation systems and their relevance to radiation carcinogenesis, and on the role and interplay of oncogenes, retroviruses and radiation in cell transformation. Particular emphasis is placed on the influence of such variables as radiation quality, dose and dose rate, promoters and suppressors and cell types on in vitro cell transformation. Also considered are the implications of the results from cell transformation studies for radiation-induced cancer in man and for radiological protection. This book will be of interest to molecular biologists, medical physicists and cancer specialists who require a comprehensive account of the latest work on cell transformation and radiation-induced cancer. ...
