Excerpt: Volcanism of Northern Canada has led to the formation of hundreds of volcanic areas and extensive lava formations across Northern Canada, indicating volcanism played a major role in shaping its surface. The region's different volcano and lava types originate from different tectonic settings and types of volcanic eruptions, ranging from passive lava eruptions to violent explosive eruptions. Northern Canada has a record of very large volumes of magmatic rock called large igneous provinces. They are represented by deep-level plumbing systems consisting of giant dike swarms, sill provinces and layered intrusions. Map of the 1,267 million year old Mackenzie dike swarm (black lines). Dots indicate areas where flow direction was determined. Red arcuate line indicates boundary between vertical flow and horizontal flow.Vast volumes of basaltic lava covered Northern Canada in the form of a flood basalt event 1,267 million years ago that engulfed the landscape near the Coppermine River southwest of Coronation Gulf in the Canadian Arctic. This volcanic activity built an extensive lava plateau and large igneous province with an area of 170,000 km (65,637 sq mi) representing a volume of lavas of at least 500,000 km (119,956 cu mi). With an area of 170,000 km (65,637 sq mi) and a volume of 500,000 km (119,956 cu mi), it is larger than the Columbia River Basalt Group in the United States and comparable in size to the Deccan Traps in west-central India, making it one of the largest flood basalt events ever to appear on the North American con...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=22445151 ... Product Description
This study explores the relationship between the Caribou Inuit and the Fur Trade in the Kivalliq Barrens of Nunavut, Canada, between the years 1717-1900 A.D. It has previously been posited that with the introduction of European technologies during this period, the Caribou Inuit were drawn out of a traditional pattern of subsistence and into a larger world-scale economic. Arctic anthropologists have often used historical data, exclusively, to examine this transition - an approach which necessarily biases the examination of development to a colonial point of view, therefore removing the agency of the Inuit in the process. In general, a common element of such studies is that it is assumed that the Caribou Inuit pursued the new and highly functional technologies introduced by the Hudson Bay Company, such as metal implements and firearms, and by doing so were drawn into an economy of trade. However, the actual process of how European goods and technologies were integrated into Caribou Inuit society, by the Caribou Inuit themselves, has received little attention, and more rarely has this process been studied beyond historical documentation through the use of archaeology. This study seeks to rectify the situation by specifically examining Caribou Inuit individuals of the period, who were independent traders that acted as middlemen between the bulk of the Caribou Inuit population and the Hudson Bay Company. ... Product Description
Uqalurait, pointed snowdrifts formed by Arctic blizzards, 'would tell us which direction to go in,' says elder Mariano Aupilarjuk. This oral history, guided by the traditional knowledge of Inuit elders from across Nunavut, also follows the uqalurait. Thousands of quotes from over three hundred Inuit elders about their culture and customs cover all aspects of traditional life, from raising children to hunting, the land, and architecture, to belief systems, cosmology, and the Inuit's remarkable ability to make do with what they had. Given the recent creation of Nunavut and current attention to the Arctic due to climate change, Uqalurait is a timely source of insight from a people whose values of sharing and respect for the environment have helped them to live for centuries at the northern limit of the inhabitable world. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Researching the Inuit? Be sure to add this to your library
Uqalurait is a collection of quotations from the Inuit elders themselves. This book is excellent for research, especially anthropology. It helps you get the "feel" of Inuit culture as well as learn about their worldview. It is the next best thing to talking to the Inuit themselves. I used it when I wrote a paper about Inuit religion, but it can be used for any topic from family structure, hunting practices, leadership in the community, music and dance, astronomy, cosmology, shamanism, death, architecture, etc. So be sure to add this to your library.

Product Description

In The Road to Nunavut, R. Quinn Duffy analyses federal government policy on the social and economic growth of the Inuit. Duffy describes the economic, social, and political changes in the Eastern Arctic and provides the historical background to the current debate on Inuit land claims and political subdivision of the Northwest Territory. Gradually, and somewhat reluctantly, the Canadian government assumed the role of guardian of the Inuit and became involved in their housing, education, employment, and health services. The evolution of government-supported services created problems that are still unmet; the changes in life-style that resulted were exacerbated by unemployment and the Inuit's inferior social and political status. Starting in the 1960's, these complex problems led to increased delinquency, violence, and abuse of alcohol. Duffy shows how the Inuit gradually assumed responsibility for improving their situation, eventually developing the political maturity that found expression in the Inuit Tapirisat of Canada, its affiliated organizations, and the pressure for regional self-determination.

Product Description
Long before the first European settlers crossed the Atlantic, Canada's original inhabitants had a culture based on respect for the earth and all forms of life. These vibrant and practical values enriched Canada's formation. In fact, the early settlers from Europe might not even have survived if not for the help and support of Canada's First Nations, who taught the newcomers how to live in a harsh natural environment. First Nations people shared their values and knowledge, played active roles in Canada's journey toward Confederation, and helped create the modern nation Canada has become today. In the twenty-first century, First Nations are more and more taking their rightful place in Canada's culture and government. Their wisdom and insights are helping to guide Canada in its role in the international community. In this book, you will learn about the contributions of these First Nations communities. In particular, you will make an imaginary trip to Nunavut, Canada's new First Nations territory, and gain a greater understanding of Canada's rich and lasting Native heritage. ... Read more

The whaling industry, the introduction of firearms to hunting strategies and environmental degredation are just three of the issues discussed. ... Read more

Product Description
Furs, gold, whales, oil--the reason for going north has always been to empty the treasure house. The northern territories are vast and sparsely populated, so southern Canadians have been content to consider the North a colony, not a true part of Canada.

Since the first British naval expeditions to the "Frozen North," the history of the region has been romanticised. This book presents that history as seen from the North itself. Ken Coates begins by describing the resilient pre-European cultures of the Dene and Inuit peoples. Chapters are devoted to each period of development--the fur trade, Arctic whaling, the Klondike Gold Rush, military projects like the Alaska Highway, Ottawa's "bureaucratisation" of the North, and the resource projects of recent years.

First published in 1985, this book shows that modern northern politics have deep roots in the true history of "Canada's colonies." ... Read more

Fort Simpson was first started as a fur trading site in 1803 then named Fort of the Forks. The Village of Fort Simpson was permanent settlement in July 1822 when the Hudson's Bay Company constructed a trading post, naming it for George Simpson, then the Governor of Rupert's Land. Until 1910 Fort Simpson was "a company town", with some participation by the Anglican and Roman Catholic Missions. The Dene know it as Liidli Kue, meaning The place where the rivers come together. Pope John Paul II attempted to visit the community in September 1984 as part of his Canadian tour, but was prevented from landing due to fog; in an address over the radio from Yellowknife, he promised to visit in the future. He did so in September 1987 near the end of the tour of the United States, making a side trip to Fort Simpson. There are two main annual festivals which occur in Fort Simpson. The first which is held in March is known as the "Beavertail Jamboree". This is a winter carnival which includes traditional games, snowmobile races, ... Read more

Change in arctic populations has not been a sudden phenomenon, but rather a gradual process that has occurred over a number of generations. In this longitudinal case study, McElroy introduces readers to four Baffin Island communities in the eastern Canadian Arctic and focuses on the challenges and hardships they face in transition from hunting-gathering lifestyles to wage employment and political participation in towns. Through long-term fieldwork, historical material, and life histories collected from elders, Nunavut Generations richly illustrates political and ecological change alongside native stability and self-determination. ... Product Description
On the surface, naming is simply a way to classify people and their environments. The premise of this study is that it is much more a form of social control, a political activity, a key to identity maintenance and transformation. Governments legislate and regulate naming; people fight to take, keep, or change their names. A name change can indicate subjugation or liberation, depending on the circumstances. But it always signifies a change in power relations. Since the late 1970s, the author has looked at naming and renaming, cross-culturally and internationally, with particular attention to the effects of colonisation and liberation. The experience of Inuit in Canada is an example of both. Colonisation is only part of the Nunavut experience. Contrary to the dire predictions of cultural genocide theorists, Inuit culture particularly traditional naming has remained extremely strong, and is in the midst of a renaissance. Here is a ground-breaking study by the founder of the discipline of political onomastics. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatwilderness areas
The photographs in the book in particular are of very high quality indeed and absorb you into these stunning river wilderness areas. The book is a nice balance of informative text and photography. It covers 10 different rivers and of course cannot be expansive on all these areas in 150 pages. Each river is dealt with in a separate chapter with an appropriate individual map to compliment the map at the beginning of the book showing all 10 rivers. The book blends together well with a common wilderness theme and was pleasing to read. I note the author runs wilderness tours but this aspect is not pushed to the fore at all in the writing, and the text whilst relatively straight forward is informative and holds your interest. It is definitely not a guide book and not particularly written for canoests, which suited me just fine.It provides the statistics of each river in a compact manner(source, length, drop, completion etc) at the beginning of each chapter which adds to the books appeal. It is an excellent book for all readers(even non readers)to enjoy and appreciate the great wilderness areas. The book did not let me down and lived up to what it appeared to promise to the general reader. ... Inuit Women is the definitive study of the Inuit during a time of rapid change. Written shortly after the creation of Nunavut, a new province carved out of traditional Inuit homelands in the Canadian North, this compelling book combines conclusions drawn from the authors' fourteen years of ethnographic research with the stories of Inuit women and men, told in their own words. Inuit Women also explores global issues: the impact of rapid social change and Canadian resettlement policy on Inuit culture; women's roles in society; and gender relations in Baffin Island, in the Eastern Arctic. Billson and Mancini also include an extensive section on how the newly created territory of Nunavut is impacting the lives of Inuit women and their families. This book stands alone in its attention to Inuit women's issues and lives and should be read by everyone interested in gender relations, development, modernization, globalization, and Inuit culture. ... Product Description
Kiumajut [Talking Back]: Game Management and Inuit Rights 1900-70 examines Inuit relations with the Canadian state, with a particular focus on two interrelated issues. The first is how a deeply flawed set of scientific practices for counting animal populations led policymakers to develop policies and laws intended to curtail the activities of Inuit hunters. Animal management informed by this knowledge became a justification for attempts to educate and, ultimately, to regulate Inuit hunters. The second issue is Inuit responses to the emerging regime of government intervention. The authors look closely at resulting court cases and rulings, as well as Inuit petitions. The activities of the first Inuit community council are also examined in exploring how Inuit began to "talk back" to the Canadian state.

The authors' award-winning previous collaboration, Tammarniit [Mistakes]: Inuit Relocation in the Eastern Arctic 1939-63, focused on government responsibility, social welfare, and relocation in Inuit relations with the state. Kiumajut is not a continuation of Tammarniit, but rather an interrelated, stand-alone study that examines a separate range of issues relevant to a historical understanding of community development in Nunavut. Kiumajut draws on new material compiled from archival sources and from an archive of oral interviews conducted by the authors with Inuit elders and others between 1997 and 1999. This volume provides the reader with new and important insights for understanding this critical period in the history of Inuit in Canada. ... Read more

In 1936, Graham Rowley went to the still-unexplored west coast of Baffin Island as the archaeologist for a small British expedition - the last in the Canadian North that depended on traditional techniques. "Cold Comfort", his acclaimed memoir of this period, captures the way of life in the North before World War II, including the experience of traveling by dogsled over unexplored land. This new edition includes the beginning of Rowley's planned sequel covering his post-war experiences in the Arctic. The additional three chapters describe Operation Musk-Ox, the first military exercise to show that it was feasible to manoeuvre in the Arctic even in winter, and Rowley's work for the Canadian Defense Research Board. An afterword by Susan Rowley and John Bennett expands on Rowley's ongoing involvement in the rapid change that took place from the Cold War to the establishment of Nunavut. ... Read more
