Editorial Review

Product Description
The latest of a series of publications based on workshops sponsored by the Committee on Military Nutrition Research, this book's focus on emerging technologies for nutrition research arose from a concern among scientists at the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine that traditional nutrition research, using standard techniques, centered more on complex issues of the maintenance or enhancement of performance, and might not be sufficiently substantive either to measure changes in performance or to predict the effects on performance of stresses soldiers commonly experience in operational environments. The committee's task was to identify and evaluate new technologies to determine whether they could help resolve important issues in military nutrition research. The book contains the committee's summary and recommendations as well as individually authored chapters based on presentations at a 1995 workshop.Other chapters cover techniques of body composition assessment, tracer techniques for the study of metabolism, ambulatory techniques for the determination of energy expenditure, molecular and cellular approaches to nutrition, the assessment of immune function, and functional and behavioral measures of nutritional status. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not so great
This book isn't the greatest.Maybe it was just the class in general that I disliked, but I didn't seem to get very much out of this text.Additionally, it was published 10years ago, so the technologies probably aren't "emerging" anymore. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Needs an update regards fats

Book is good but needs a serious update regards "fats and oils". Check out the following titles. "Nourishing Traditions"by Sally Fallon, and "The Coconut Oil Miracle" by Bruce Fife, and "Know Your Fats" by Mary G. Enig.Have found so much misinformation by "experts" with conflicting data, that I just had to ferret out what is 'true or false". The listed books did that.Talker

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything You Always Wanted To Know-Nutrition by Reuben MD
The author is a proponent of the health food diet regimen.
He recommends not to consume junk food in order to minimize vitamin deficiencies. The work explains the following about
vitamins, cooking and canning:
o 30% of vitamins are lost in cooking/canning
o 25% of the vitamin content is lost in sterilization
o 27% of vitamins are lost in sterilization
o 12% is lost when you heat the contents of a can

In addition, the book promotes Vitamin B. Fried liver provides
vitamin A. Lemon juice is a good source of the vitamin C.
Brewer's yeast and B12 magnifies the B 12 vitamin. He explains
that natural vitamins are better than synthetic vitamins.
Soil impacts vitamins. Too much iron can produce fatal E-coli
whereas too little dietary vitamin can result in general lethargy. Dietary iron is in meat, whole wheat and whole bran.
This book is an excellent value for any health professional
or enthusiast.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Good Book on Nutrition with Diet Tips Added
THe book is 256 pages long and it takes the form of Dr. Reuban's previous sex books (Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex but Were Afraid to Ask.etc). A person basically asks a questions in bold headings and heanswers it with a wide variet of wit and style. It feels just like Dr.Reuban is right there talking to you the person.

The book premise is verysimple. The majority of the things the media tells us is wrong. Very wrong. So wrong that he tells us that much of our diseases and troubles involvingthe body (cancer, diabetes, etc) can be prevented if we simply take theprecautinos he tells us in this book. His diet, or what you can do to behealthy can be summed up in one sentence:Eat food in their natural form, these being fruits and vegetables, and other forms of food in their naturalform. He rants on the FDA and The Food Industry. He makes the Food Industryinto monsters.

The book is good. Very good in fact that I gave it fivestars for I totally agree with the premise that the main thing causing forAmericans, including me, to become unhealthy is simply the additives andpreservatives added. Reuban goes on to say that the chemicals found in ourfood cause cancer and even sperm count. He also says in the book that thereason non-industrialized countries like Georgia have much less of cancerand diabetes is because their food is natural.

To sum up his diet: Eatthings in their natural form regardless of the fat. Don't buy food wherethe ingrediants are unpronunciable. Don't buy refined sugar, or enrichedbread. Don't drink soda. I recommend you also get his other book: TheSave-Your-Life Diet.Don't worry if its out of print. It can probaby befound in a used book store.

5-0 out of 5 stars A family bible for 20 years
I bought this book in college, and it still circulates among my family members. It changed the way I eat, and time has only proven the book'sconcepts. It is a little zealous, but truly a wonderful book.

4-0 out of 5 stars To understand nutrition + processed/packaged food stuff
A must read for understanding processed food and packaged food in the supermarkets besides nutrition. Though written in 70's, the book isstill relevant for the day. Highly motivating towards switching to healthy &wholesome food habits. Has a "Layman's Question & Answer"approach to the subject, yet covers the subject in depth, with clarity andhumour - making the book easy to read and benefit from it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best way to help your furry friends
A friend of mine recommended this book to me because I have ayear and a half old cocker spaniel named Lily that suffered from emotional distress when ever I left her alone. She would whine and cry until I would go back into the house and take her with me. She couldn't be left alone for 5 minutes. Now that I have this book and used it's natural remedies Lily is fine. I purchased a second copy for my sister because her dog suffered from seizures. She was tired of treating him with pills that altered his behavior and made his hair fall out while he continued to suffer through the seizures. Thanks to this book he is healthy and no longer suffers from seizures. He is like a new dog. I recommend this book to everyone that truly loves their animals.
