Right now you're at the front page of this site, which can be accessed through lists of the taxa or through keys . Choose your favorite method and click away! To the best of my knowledge, this is (and was) the first complete flora on the Web, and the first to use interactive hyper-keys. I feel that the HTML language has tremendous potential for interactive determination of plant specimens, and Orchids of Wisconsin is the first incarnation of that idea.    Extractions: This monotypic genus is named after a beautiful Greek nymph, rather appropriate given the beauty of the flower. The specific epithet bulbosa is the Latin meaning "bulbed," in reference to the small pseudobulb of this species. Arethusa bulbosa is closely related to Eleorchis japonica of Japan; historically E. japonica had been treated as Arethusa japonica DESCRIPTION: Plant arising from a small, round corm rather loosely attached to the substrate in which is growing (typically Sphagnum ). One leaf , grass-like, 4-20 cm long and 3-12 mm wide, reduced or absent at flowering time, developing more fully later in the season. Flower typically one (rarely two) located at the terminus of a stalk ranging from 10-40 cm long, subtended by a bract 2-4 mm long and about 2 mm wide. Sepals oblanceolate, 2-4 cm long and 4-9 mm wide, bright magenta to pinkish white, rarely white; forming an erect hood or backing to the rest of the flower. Petals oblanceolate, 2-3 cm long and 3-8 mm wide, closely appressed to the column, colored as sepals. Labellum obovate, 20-25 mm long and 12-15 mm wide, whitish pink to white in the center with a suffusion of yellow and spotted with deep magenta, margin pink; center of the labellum bearing numerous yellowish hairs.

And in Nicaragua, best known for its volatile politics, and more traditionally for its lakes and volcanoes, He must have been particularly industrious, as there are about 800 species of orchids found here. More than 600 of these species have been identified and include some of the most beautiful and complicated flowers that exist. For example, the Cattleya Cattleya skinnerii C. skinnerii Maxillaria (42 species), Chondrorhyncha (2 species), Cochleanthes (1 species), Galeottia (1 species), Lycaste (8 species), Xylobium (5 species), (6 species), Stanhopea (8 species), Oncidium (about 15 species that are cloud forest species) and Sobralia (at least 14 known species and probably several unidentified species).

Atlas-volume large folio (48 x 33 cm) and text-volume (38.5 x 26 cm). 3 calligraphed title-pages (atlas) and 1 heliograph title (text-volume), 108 original watercolour drawings of orchids, exquisitely coloured, finished with arabic gum and signed by the author, photograph of author pasted onto leaf preceding title-page. Both volumes are uniformly bound in half blue morocco, marbled paper boards, title first part gold-stamped on spines of both volumes, marbled endleaves. (40 drawings), (52 drawings), and a third part called (16 drawings), without further specifications on the title. The first part was produced by the author in twelve copies, whereas the second and third parts are entirely unrecorded and of which even fewer copies were produced. The text-volume contains heliographed plates with hand-written explanations to the orchids depicted in the first part, The large-folio drawings testify to Camus's outstanding craftmanship both as a botanist and artist and to his love for the genus of orchids. Their charm cannot fail to captivate anyone who leaves through the atlas. Both volumes are in excellent condition and are an essential contribution for a major botanical collection.

    Extractions: ORCHID DESCRIPTION: POTTING: PROPAGATION: Using a sterilized razor blade, knife, or pruning shears, most Orchids can be reproduced by division. The utensil can be sterilized by holding it over a flame. Sympodial Orchids (those that grow horizontally) can be divided by cutting the rhizome so that each division has three or more growths and one actively growing lead. Backbulbs may also have dormant buds and should be potted up separately. Monopodial Orchids (those that grow vertically) cannot be divided in this way. Many of these kinds, such as Phalaenopsis species and hybrids, produce offshoots called, keikis, at nodes along the inflorescence axis. When the roots of the keikis are a few centimeters long, the little plants can be potted up in the same way as the parent plant. Older plants that become top-heavy can be severed, the top half with its aerial roots moved to another pot or basket. The development of endosperm in Orchids usually stops at an early stage if it forms at all. Endosperm is a tissue that nourishes the embryo. At maturity, the seed consists of an embryo, a seed coat, and little else. Since there is a lack of endosperm, in nature the embryo is nourished by a certain fungal strain. The embryo obtains carbohydrates and mineral nutrients from a mycorrhizal fungus; therefore, this fungi is necessary for germination. Orchids can be germinated in glass flasks on agar with the same sugars ordinarily produced by the fungi along with some mineral nutrients.
