Where and How JOHN DAY BASIN ANGLING REGULATIONS Regulations for angling in the John Day River and it's tributaries have specific objectives based on annual inventory and catch information. Season dates are set to protect critical periods in the life cycle of fish species such as spawning or smolt migration. Catch limits are developed to protect populations: to allow for spawning escapement, and to maintain recreational opportunity. Closures of specific areas are designed to protect fish in critical habitat areas where they may be particularly vulnerable to mortality or disturbance by human activity. Angling and harvest of spring Chinook is prohibited in the John Day Basin. The Granite Creek system, including tributaries (near the town of Granite) is closed to all angling for the protection of vulnerable spawning and rearing spring Chinook. Steelhead angling is open all year from the Tumwater Falls closure to the mouth of the North Fork. The daily bag limit is two for adipose-clipped steelhead, and catch-and-release only for wild (non-adipose-clipped) steelhead. The statewide bag limit of 20 steelhead applies. All salmon and any steelhead to be released may not be removed from the water. All fin-clipped salmon or steelhead in the basin are strays from other systems.
