5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Source of Information
I have lost 25 pounds myself and my daughter has lost 16 since we got the book and started with some of the recipes and healthier methods given by the book. No more frying for one.We have all but cut out beef, white flour & pasta, white and potato bread. There are some oatmeal pancakes as part of the recipes that the kids actually love.We get out as a family and exercise - be it the park or just racing to the corner - cut tv time down and dance more around the house. We have been on a roll. And the best part is they don't even realize that I have changed so much.

5-0 out of 5 stars A new approach to weight loss for children: teach them good health habits that they will keep for the rest of their lives
Diets are notoriously ineffective, so why do we rely on them so much to fight obesity? "The No-Diet Obesity Solution for Kids" offers a new approach to weight loss for children: teach them good health habits that they will keep for the rest of their lives. Valuing exercise, moderation, and home cooking over diet foods and crunching calories, "The No-Diet Obesity Solution for Kids" may just be what parents need to manage their children's weight, and possibly their own weight as well!

5-0 out of 5 stars As a mother and a nurse
"I enjoyed the time I have spent with The No-Diet Obesity Solution for Kids. Dr. Vos gives great practical advice and starting points for many families facing the growing issue of overweight kids--with a realistic dose of consequences that are in store for all people and families if the obesity epidemic is not met head on by committed participants. I agree with the importance of spending a great deal of time with my children, playing, being outside, exercising, and cooking. I really liked the chapter on the "The Hard Facts of Being Overweight." Too many shy away from telling the truth to patients and families, and we are doing them no favor by sugar-coating an already obvious problem. I really was drawn to the chapters on getting started together, raising active children and teens, and the 3 Ps and 3 Cs. I liked the recipes and snack ideas, too.
Dr. Vos does not judge or blame; she merely holds up a mirror and allows people the opportunity to evaluate for themselves what will work and what won't. She reminds us that parents need to be involved and that children will do what you do and not what you say. Parents may want the best for their children, but kids also want what's best for their parents, so the inclusion of the family unit is necessary for success. This book makes that point very well.
Dr. Vos does not give just one suggestion, but many, and encourages families to find their own path. Health and life are flexible and fluid, so families must be the same, and families dealing with concerns or issues need options. This book is a great place to begin and does not leave anyone out with the types of suggestions and information provided."
As a mother of two and an RN - I can say that we need more of this literature in the market.

5-0 out of 5 stars an answer to many prayers
This book is not just for parents of overweight kids--it has something for every parent. In a culture where food ads zero in on children and one in three children is caught in the epidemic of obesity, parents are beginning to realize that they have to do more to keep their children healthy. But what? This book shows the way, whether you have a brand new baby or are looking eye to eye with a teenager. Through stories and examples, this book tells you how to read standard growth charts and apply them to your own child's growth. It tells you which part of the food label to focus on, and why you should buy foods that don't have labels. The book shows you how to organize family meals so you can fit homemade goodness into your busy schedule--and provides recipes, too.

The author, a doctor who actually does all of the things she asks her patients to do, provides a calm viewpoint on family matters, with insights about the value of going outside to play and sharing family dinnertime so that everyone in the family is truly nourished. I wish I'd had this book years ago when my children were young. I would have loved to avoid some of those mealtime battles. You can be sure that I am going to use these tips and techniques with my grandchildren! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Save your money
My doctor recommended this book in a vain hope of getting me to change my eating habits. Not a good investment. It takes 5 chapters to get to the central idea which is - only eat when you are hungry. The rest of the book simply restates this bit of wisdom in different ways over and over again. So here is my recommendation - "Don't eat when you are not hungry". There I saved you 10 dollars!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Freedom from the diet roller coaster!
In this book "Diets Still Don't Work" Bob Schwartz, PHD
teaches you why diets dont work, what the diet mentality is, why you
may not be able to keep weight off and more. You complete a number of
written exercises. These are designed to help you realize the reasons
you have excess weight and your attitudes towards eating. As you
progress through the book you learn the habits of naturally slim
people and how you can mimic these behaviors so they become second
nature and you too will be naturally slim! By the end of the book you
have a list of goals to accomplish other than focusing on weight, know
how to naturally lose weight and keep it off and decide if you are
ready to make the commitment. This book published in 1990 is the
sequel to Bob's original book "Diets Don't Work".Bob has
since updated and revised the "Diet's Don't Work" book
(published 1996). Both books cover essentially the same information
with only slight variation. I recommend reading one or the other to
help you get off the diet roller coaster!

I first read this book about six years ago when I gained 25 pounds as a college freshman.I realized then that I was eating compulsively and lost 10 pounds almost immediately when I focused on the principles in the book. I just picked it up again when I found myself eating without thinking andgaining weight again, and it was so easy to get back to a healthy way ofthinking and eating. This book makes so much sense and works becauseyou're not depriving yourself, and you look at food in a whole new light. I really recommend it to anyone with weight or eating issues. It has doneso much for me. ... Read more

Product Description
This new addition contains the basic diet and is enhanced by new explanations of the underlying theories. There are seven new chapters.Amazon.com Review
Designed to catapult your body into a state of fat meltdown,Dr. Atkins's diet has taken America by storm. It targets insulin, thehormone that regulates blood sugar levels. The bodies of mostovereaters are continually in a state of hyperinsulinism; their bodiesare so adept at releasing insulin to help convert excess carbohydratesto fat that there's always too much of the hormone circulating throughthe body. This puts the body into a bind; it always wants to storefat. Even when people with hyperinsulinism try to loseweight--especially when they cut fat but increase carbohydrateconsumption--their efforts will fail. This is why Dr. Atkins refers toinsulin as "the fat-producing hormone."

Dr. Atkins'sdiet is extremely low in carbohydrates, which helps to regulateinsulin production and decrease circulating insulin; less insulin soonresults in less fat storage and fewer food cravings. The diet is farfrom torturous, though--those who've tried it attest that hunger isnot a part of this plan. Ninety percent of Dr. Atkins'spatients--more than 25,000 of them--have experienced dramatic weightloss. The book includes recipes for such luscious, low-carb dishes aslobster soup, zabaglione, sea bass, and blueberry ice cream, and evenincludes a carbohydrate gram counter and menus. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I've lost over 60lbs using this diet
This is the first diet that's worked for me.After college and as I aged I started picking up more and more weight.I tried many of the popular diets but the weight kept gradually coming on despite my being an active sportsman.

Then at work one day after I commented to a friend about all the diets I've tried with no success, she suggested I borrow her book on the Adkins Diet.I liked what I started reading so I bought my own copy.I noticed it consisted of 3 sub-diets--and the first sub-diet is the one that gets all the flak. The first is the 2-week boot-camp version where where you're cold-turkey cutting out carbs like breads, cereals and noodles and other carbs and sugars.I tried this and noticed weight loss gains within those first two weeks.Impressive.I then switched to the 2nd sub-diet with continued weight loss gains.I'm now on the 3rd sub-diet.That means I eat disciplined almost all of the time and then for a special occasion like a weekend or party, I'll enjoy a little something.Like noodles, which I love, or a pie and ice cream.

What's great about the diet is it gives you control. You know now what affects your weight so you can decide when to get on and off the diet. When you have that control you realize you're in command of your weight--which means you can realize your weight is your responsibility and your weight is under your control. You're at the helm.So when you look in the mirror you realize this is where you have gotten yourself and if you want to change it--you know what to do.

A last comment. You'll realize by watching your weight level being under your control that it's a function of your diet and your exercise level. As I get older I don't have as much time for the exercise part so that means I have to put more emphasis on the diet side.I still exercise 20-30 minutes a day, but I used to exercise 60 minutes a day.Again, though, the Adkins diet gives you the controls over your weight. And my annual physical results at the doctor have continued to show great results over the 10 years I've been on this diet.

I would recommend to anyone that, assuming they have no special diet issues, they try this diet and see if it works for them. But try it sincerely.Really eat and stop eating what it says for that first diet/sub-diet.Good luck and happy weight loss and then weight control for the rest of your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars This the one to buy
If you're contemplating doing the Atkins Diet, this is the book to buy.The version of the diet in this book is far better than the newer book that has been published by Atkins lately.

What can I say about the diet? It's not an easy diet.No bread make lunches a challenge, and the ability grab fast food for a quick meal is definitely a drawback. If you don't cook, this could be a problem.

But when I am on the diet, I can say the following:

1. I feel GREAT!My energy level is higher.
2. I sleep better
3. Heartburn completely gone.No more need to take Prilosec daily
4. I am much more alert and awake
5. I think and focus better
6. My blood tests come back with much better numbers
7. I am never sleepy after a meal
8. I lose weight without starving myself
9. The diet is a natural appetite suppressant.I never find myself snacking.

My doctor thought the Atkins diet was dangerous. In the 90s he totally tried to get me off the diet, but 1 year later I was 75 pound lighter and blood chemistry looked great.Way better than it was a year earlier.

I won't lie to you.I have fallen off the wagon twice, for extended periods of time. And every time I go back on the diet, I am absolutely amazed at how GOOD I feel when I am eating low carb.I am on it now, and hope to stay on it for good.I really don't want to give up feeling this good every day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book Great Info!!
this book is great... if you are apprehensive about Low carbing...Don't be. this book will tell you it all and you will lose weight trust me... i have lost 20 pounds and a lot of inches. I've changed the way I eat and have changed my mine on eating the way I used to. This book helped.... Thanks

3-0 out of 5 stars Readers Bonanza
I personally would rather a straight forward "DO THIS" approach, rather than all the explanations and history of this diet. I think a book on "why" and a book on "how" would have set me in the right direction much sooner. Over all good book however.

5-0 out of 5 stars I tried it and it works. It's as simple as that.
Im not into long reviews.I don't like reading long reviews myself so I wont bore you.I tried the diet and it worked. In the first two weeks alone I lost 20 pounds without exercise. In 6 months I lost 70 pounds.I put other friends on it and they had similar results. It's now 5 years since I went on Atkins and Im still thin and energetic.Im 40 years old and look as if Im in my late 20's.(A by-product of the glutathione and other vitamins found naturally in beef). It works and its as simple as that. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Parents Guide
This is a great book for parents. Clinicians will also find it useful. It does not lend itself as well as I had hoped to use in a monitored pediatric program. By spanning the entire course of childhood and adolescence, it contains "big picture" which is useful to parents but would need to be supplemented to concentration on problems at any given age.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Information
There's a lot of good information here.As a teacher of twenty-five years, and as a parent, I've dealt with more than my share of overweight kids, and read everything that comes along on the subject. And although this book is one of the better ones out there, I've been recommending the CD talk "The Fat Kid's Diet: Stop Childhood Obesity In Your Home," available here at Amazon, to the parents who come to me with their concerns. It's brief, sensible, and right to the point. ... Product Description
With nearly twenty years of exhaustive research it is back to basics for former First Sergeant Dennis Brooks, the author of The Skip a Day Diet. In fact, his approach to a healthy diet and good nutrition is a bit “boot camp,” meaning that his tactics use simple, methodic, and plainly stated common sense. In this self-improvement guide, the author uses best-practice methods that blend biology with physiology for losing weight with his unique skip-a-day approach. In thirty chapters, he introduces a revolutionary approach to eating to get full during the first twenty-four hours, resulting in a decrease of appetite the following day. Written in a marvelously easy-to-read style, it helps men and women of all ages obtain their ideal weight. The author declares: Give the Skip a Day Diet two days and learn how the diet forces the body to release stored fat that you deliberately target and burn, which leads to permanent weight loss. Readers have nothing to lose—but weight! ... Read more

Product Description
In America today, excess weight and obesity are increasing at alarming rates. The resulting public health crisis has spawned a multi-billion-dollar industry, diet products that promise miraculous solutions to excess weight. This year, Americans will ingest approximately $2.4 billion worth of prepackaged weight-loss meals like Lean Cuisine and NutriSystem, $1.7 billion in shakes like Slim-Fast and snack bars like Zone, and then wash it all down with $15 billion worth of diet soda. That doesn't even begin to count all the books, magazines, club memberships, 'miracle' drugs, and other products Americans will purchase. Whether they truly suffer from a weight problem or just believe they would look better if they lost weight, millions of Americans are scrambling desperately for weight-loss solutions. And yet, as a society, America is still getting fatter. In this book you will learn the truth about the diet industry: the vast majority of these products are not part of the solution; they're part of the problem. Along the way, you will also learn why individuals' focus should be on good health, not weight loss and what the best approach is for truly achieving that goal. ... Read more

Product Description
Arguably the most serious issue facing the food industry is what is now widely recognized as an epidemic in obesity. Food manufacturers are under increasing pressure over both the degree to which they have contributed to the problem and what role they should play in solving it. Drawing on the expertise of some of the world’s leading experts in this area, Food, Diet and Obesity summarizes current research on the causes of obesity, the role of food components in promoting or reducing weight gain, and the strategies manufacturers can adopt to reduce the problem.

After an introductory chapter on global trends in obesity, Part 1 looks at the range of contributing factors to obesity, from nutrient-gene interactions, energy metabolism and physical activity to sensory responses to food, portion size and the psychology of overeating. Part 2 looks at macronutrients and their role in weight gain or loss, with chapters on topics such as energy density, dietary fat, carbohydrates, protein and dietary fibre. The final part of the book discusses issues in developing effective strategies for weight control, from gaining consumer acceptance of weight-control food products to the role of community-based approaches in preventing obesity.

With its distinguished editor and international team of experts, Food, Diet and Obesity will be a standard work for nutritionists and R&D staff throughout the food industry, as well as all those concerned with understanding and reducing obesity. ... Read more

Product Description

Anthropologist Eric Bailey uses a cultural and holistic analysis of African American food preferences to show how black Americans generally perceive health, body image, food, dieting, physical fitness, and exercise. As is true of Americans overall, black Americans are becoming more overweight and obese than ever before. So, too, they are seeing the consequences: heart attacks, strokes, hypertension, and Type II diabetes at earlier and earlier ages. Bailey offers a new cultural diet for black Americans and a prescription for working collectively, not only to understand this critical health issue, but also to establish a lifestyle strategy that will be both effective and manageable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Significant 'Culturally Appropriate' Book
Eric Bailey outdoes himself in "Food Choice and Obesity in Black America: Creating a New Cultural Diet", 150 pgs, Greenwood ebooks.

If Doctors, Healthcare and the Fitness industries ever wondered why African Americans are not coming in droves, this book is a Must Read!

By simply overlaying Eurpean Ethnic ideals onto Black Americans, a disservice is being done to both ethnicities.Eric Bailey has a catch-phrase that should be on the tip of everyone's tongue in the aformentioned industries:"Culturally Appropriate".

In "Food Choice and Obesity in Black America", the author covers relevant background material to the growing obesity problem in the African American communities.Citing historical, familial, religous, peer and cultural reasons, there is evidence that a different approach should be taken with discussing weight loss, eating habits, exercise routines and social interactions between African Americans.

Bailey doesn't just lecture to White Doctors and African Americans in this timely book.He takes the time to explain why African Americans view Obesity and Food differently than European Americans. He also explains why African Americans should open up to their doctors, take the time to explain their cultural viewpoints in regards to body type, culture, food preparation.

Never once did I feel talked down to in reading this book, and I'm certain no one who will read "Food Choice and Obesity in Black America" will feel offended.

Bailey takes us on a cultural train ride through the eyes of African Amercians in regards to how they view weight loss and food through their community and how it differs from what is called 'mainstream america'.The last chapter is about what Eric Bailey terms "THE NEW BLACK CULTURAL DIET AND LIFESTYLE".He asks that each African American ask themselves six timely questions, honestly and openly about themselves, their culture, their family, their food, their reality and their body.

A sure winner in the fight against obesity for Eric Bailey. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars amazing!
A one day read that can free youfrom your gluttony or other addictions, IF you stop trying to do it yourself, and let God help you.Amazing insight and a straightforward method. I have bought several to give to friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars Back to the basics - almost too easy to be true!
This book has been around for over 20 years and, to date, I haven't found any weight loss method that makes more sense. The author, Diane Hampton questions the traditional idea of dieting and the notion that people need three square meals a day in order to be healthy. This may have been true in the distant past when we lived in more of an agrarian society in which people were extremely active, working outdoors and walking long distances, etc.But the majority of us work in jobs in which we are largely sedentary and, therefore, need much fewer calories than we typically take in on a daily basis. In this book, there are no food restrictions, per se, but the author does point out that when people are truly hungry - and finding true hunger is a big part of this program - they don't crave junk food, but rather find satisfaction in eating foods that hold greater nutritional value.

After following the principles outlined in this book, it was almost as if I'd had a gastric bypass! After a while I was hardly ever hungry, I could only eat very small portions because I became uncomfortably full if I ate beyond being just satisfied. At one point I even worried that I wasn't eating enough because I was hardly ever really hungry! As the author points out, this is because overweight people have a generous store of energy in the form of excess fat in the body. The body uses that stored energy, but still needs other nutrients and true hunger will signal the body's need for additional nutrients.

Although I think anyone can benefit from the principles in this book, Christians in particular will appreciate the author's emphasis on the transformative power of Christ which provides the ability to be successful in weight loss. She recognizes that people use food for any number of reasons that have nothing to do with providing fuel to the body. She explains the Lord's profound interest in our physical, spiritual and mental well-being and that He is more than able to fill the void that food has occupied in so many people's lives.

There has been some negative commentary about this book; in particular, it has been said that the author promotes unhealthy eating. To get the most out of this book, it must be understood that the purpose of this book is not to provide dietary guidelines or food recommendations. It is written to set straight the purpose of food in our lives, to recognize the power of Christ to heal and empower in the pursuit of healthy eating patterns, to discipline the body, and to promote a healthy balance between the use of food as fuel and enjoyment of the eating experience. These principle can be combined with healthy programs such as Weight Watchers, that specifically teach rehabilitation in terms of what we eat.

I, obviously, highly recommend this book to people who are tired of dead-end diets and would like to - for once and for all - get down to the root of their eating problems and come up with a livable and lasting solution for weight loss.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not A Diet!
Of all the diets I've tried (and that would be just about every one that has come along!), this is the only one that really works.Perhaps I should phrase that a little differently, because it's not really a diet, but an alternative way of eating.I was never truly in charge of my eating on my own, which is why the diets failed. But this method allowed God to be in charge, to give me the strength needed to control cravings, reduce intake and truly find peace with food.I have never found any other method for good eating that doesn't require calorie counting, point keeping or eating all the time but only foods that aren't very interesting. Also, most diets are fairly expensive because of specialty products or club memberships. The Diet Alternative is eating God's way; it costs less than regular meals, has no special eating plan to follow (as far as which foods to eat and when), no calories to count and no points to keep track of.Best of all, I feel great, I'm losing weight at a steady rate and I feel blessed by the Lord because I know He is doing the work for me.Try it!It can't hurt!

4-0 out of 5 stars God before food
This book is good for those who put food before God, but if that is not your problem don't bother with it. If you are not sure, I would read it just to see if you are stumbling into sin with your eating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!!!!
For me also the end of the yo-yo diet I just really recommend to anyone, who want to find a biblical solution for a spiritual(and physical=gluttony) problem.Great Book!!! ... Read more

Product Description
Outrunning My Shadow: Surviving Open-Heart Surgery and Battling Obesity/The Decision to Change My Life by Keith Ahrens is a fascinating and highly informative memoir about the author?s confrontation with mortality and his determination to save his own life. In this self-help book, the author shares the experience of weighing more than 400 pounds, suffering lightheadedness, and finally seeing a physician. When this sedentary man learned that he had suffered a heart attack and that open-heart surgery was his only option for survival, his efforts toward his recovery became dramatically proactive. The spirit of this book is not a confrontation for readers who are overweight, but a supportive and encouraging reminder that everyone deserves to have a long and healthy life, and that paying attention to how we live; food, exercise, regular checkups; goes a long way toward good health. For anyone seeking the inspiration and encouragement to pursue longevity, this is the place to start. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Journey Towards Good Health and Fitness
The book is a must-read for anyone who is battling obesity and heart disease, or who has a family member or friend in the same situation.

Keith Ahrens was another victim of the fast food culture, over eatingon a diet of fast and convenient food that was high in saturated fat, sodium and refined carbohydrates, and containing minimal nutritional content. With an active career, and not making his health a priority, the overeating of unhealthy foods and the lack of consistent exercise made Ahrens into a morbidly obese man.Along with the obesity came the clogged arteries, the heart disease, and being told he was in need of an open-heart bypass surgery.

Ahrens' story is not only about the ordeal of the surgery and the subsequent recovery period, but it is a story about a man who made a choice to finally put himself equal with everything else that was important in his life, and so he made the decision to plant his feet firmly on the road to good health and fitness, a journey that he has committed to be on for the rest of his life.By sharing his story with the readers, Ahrens is inviting everyone to join him on his journey, to learn the basics of good nutrition, how to live a heart-healthy lifestyle, and how important it is to exercise the body. The reader learns how important it is to see the doctor, to understand how important it is to know the body's cholesterol levels, and to be aware of the symptoms of heart disease. If Ahrens can make the journey towards good health and fitness, so can the readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Biggest Winner - Keith Ahrens
Every January we're bombarded with weight loss commercials and advertisements to lose weight now with the help of "this 30-day meal plan" or "that shake"; "this piece of equipment", or "that exercise video". Keith's story came to us quietly in the local Las Vegas newspaper, humbly telling his story and mentioning his book. I was very intrigued at what Keith had accomplished, so I purchased this book and I'm very glad that I did. Keith went through a life-changing experience: open heart surgery and he survived. That he decided to share his story is a gift to us and that makes him the biggest winner in my book.Loving to eat food is not something you can just "give up."With physician's help and self-determination, one can "quit" smoking, for instance (hopefully), however we can agree that we simply can't "quit" eating. Keith, however, learned how to eat healthier, smaller portions and incorporate exercise into his life...the weight loss formula of success "eat less and move more." It's hard to lose weight.Keith lost a lot of weight. Plus he recovered from major surgery. Let this book be inspirational for you.Motivate yourself to accomplish your goals. Seize the day. Thanks, Keith, for the reminder!

Whether your struggle is your own or that of a friend or loved one. I recommend this book as a guide to helping yourself and those you love.

Keith's journey and his depiction of it is amazing and inspirational to say the least.Thank you for sharing your story!

Product Description
Dieting, Overweight, and Obesity: Self-Regulation in a Food-Rich Environment examines why self-regulation of weight is so difficult for many people. In light of the fact that overweight and obesity has been increasing so dramatically that the World Health Organization has declared it a global epidemic, author Wolfgang Stroebe explores the genetic, environmental, and psychological influences on weight gain. The author explains the history of bodyweight standards, details the emotional and physical consequences of being overweight, and explores the various treatment and prevention plans for obesity. In reviewing the numerous psychological theories that explain people's problems with weight, Stroebe points out that each does not take into consideration the desire for palatable food.He then presents the goal conflict theory which assumes that chronic dieters who have difficulties in controlling their weight often disregard bodily cues of hunger and satiety not because they are unable to recognize them, but because they do not want to recognize them. Their eating behavior is dominated by a conflict between two incompatible goals: the goal of enjoying palatable food and the goal of losing weight. This book gives readers a comprehensive understanding of the issues involving weight gain and dieting. Psychologists and medical professionals in the field of weight management will find this book to be an indispensable resource. ... Read more
