Western and many Indian historians alike have focused on the reign of the Mughals almost to the point of total neglect and exclusion of other periods in Indian history. In-depth investigation of other ruling dynasties whether subordinate to the Mughals (such as the lesser-known Rajputs or Bundelkhandis) or preceding them (such as the Parmars, Kakathiyas, or Sharqis) or their southern contemporaries (such as Tamil Nadu's Pandyas) has rarely attracted the scholarly attention of influential historians, and often their role in Indian history has been seen as peripheral to that of the Mughals, or their contribution to Indian civilization seen as tangential and marginal. Journalists, art critics and popular historians have been particularly infected by such biases, and even highly respected art critics and social scientists have written quite dismissively of India's regional kingdoms that preceded Mughal rule or rose in the wake of it's precipitous decline.

The symposium featured a unique combination of writers, activists and scholars from Pakistan, the United States and Europe, who came together to discuss their work in and on regional Pakistani languages and ethnic cultures such as Sindhi, Baluchi, Pashto, Bangla and Punjabi. To begin, Kathryn Hansen, Director of the Center for Asian Studies, and Kamran Asdar Ali, Assistant Professor of Anthropology, stated their motivations for organizing this symposium. They noted that too often in the Western academy the study of Pakistan is centered upon the study of Urdu literary culture. However, as the October 2002 elections demonstrated, ethnicity retains a pivotal role in Pakistani culture and politics. Therefore, a deeper understanding of Pakistani culture and society in all its complexity and layers is called for, and is perhaps more necessary now than ever before. Another panel featured Shelley Feldman (Associate Professor, Sociology, Cornell University) and Saadia Toor (Ph.D. Candidate, Sociology, Cornell University), who discussed the language politics of Bangla in East and West Pakistan from 1947 to 1971. Shelley Feldman argued that historical erasure is an active process, and that Bangladesh has been actively forgotten in modern Pakistan.

Even worse, women and girls are increasingly victims of state-sponsored or condoned violence and repression. Female infanticide, honor killings, acid attacks, female genital mutilation, widow abuse, sexual slavery and child marriage are still practiced in too many parts of the world. And mass rape has become a common terror tactic in ethnic cleansing campaigns. In many nations, the legal systems perpetuate sex bias. Often laws and customs openly discriminate against women. Women are routinely denied their most basic economic, social, cultural, civil and political rights. Unfortunately, women who are the subject of violence and discrimination often have no idea what rights they have, or they don't know any effective methods to enforce those rights. In short, they lack the knowledge or the skills to advocate for themselves.
