Extractions: Eastern Illinois University [TABLE OF CONTENTS] Introduction It has been well accepted and agreed upon that foreign languages should be taught with authentic materials, for purposes of real life communication and cross-cultural understanding. Foreign language teachers at all levels have been using all sorts of media and teaching aids to enhance their classroom teaching, and to promote proficiency-oriented language learning. For years, posters, slides, transparencies as well as real objects have been used to supplement textbooks and other printed materials such as newspapers and magazines. Audio and video materials, especially recordings of native speakers and movies and films from foreign countries, have also been vital in developing both language skills and cultural awareness. With the advances in computer technologies, many of the media types are being presented in digital form and combined into what's called multimedia materials. An ever-increasing number of high quality computerassisted language learning (CALL) programs are now available on the market. Compared with CALL programs of the seventies and eighties, these multimedia programs are a big leap forward. Not only are they more sophisticated and pedagogically sound, they are much easier to use and more engaging to our learners. Before the Internet became more widely accessible to the teaching profession as well as to the general public, most language teaching and learning activities were confined within the walls of a classroom. Even multimedia computer programs were, at best, simulating the real world where language is used. Efforts have been made to expose students to real life language experiences, such as inviting guest speakers to talk to a class, organizing field trips to visit communities where the target language is spoken, establishing pen-pal relationships with students from other countries, and arranging travel-abroad programs. Realistically, these types of activities are either too complicated to set up or too costly to be available for the majority of our learners.

It came from my 15-year-old son. He had sent it from his high school, which is only three blocks from our house. It said "Me and my friends have been using your pages on the machines in the library and they think they are awesome. By the way you still owe me last week's allowance." This message made me realize two things. First, that my pages, designed for teaching ESL student English and internet skills, must be fairly interesting if they penetrated the studied nonchalance of American high-schoolers, and second, that I had better start spending more time with the family if the only way my son could get through to me was by sending e-mail from his high school. These two realizations reflect my thoroughly ambivalent attitude towards the WWW: On one hand it's true that the WWW is potentially the most important advance since television, with equal potential to change our lives
