Ed Rendells task force on medical malpractice issued its final report last week calling for several actions, however stopped short on any recommendation regarding a cap on damages for pain and suffering. Instead, the task force comprised of lawyers, doctors, insurers and hospital officials recommended "further study" on the controversial issue. Included in the advisory panels recommendations are: Gov. Rendell will review the report and plans to submit a package of long-term reforms to the Legislature in the near future. For now, he has promised that the state will pick up the tab for at least part of doctors premiums for coverage under MCare, which helps pay large verdicts whose costs exceed a physicians basic coverage, until July 1.
