Opportunities for input from staff, parents, community members, community groups, and governmental bodies will take place during the coming months. Copies of the draft are available in each school library, the Central Office, and Schlow.

Extractions: Bowling: Program gets students off streets, in alleys Sunday, January 10, 1999 By Phil Axelrod, Post-Gazette Sports Writer The buses roll into the parking lot every day after school and the students, ranging in age from 7 to 13, then roll two games at Holiday Lanes in Plum. Approximately 450 students per week from the Plum, Gateway, Franklin Regional and Kiski Area school districts participate in the program that was developed four years ago by Bob Borello, owner of Holiday Lanes. Borello, who coordinates his efforts with the school superintendents, principals and the PTAs and PTOs, rents the buses to pick up the students at school. After two hours of bowling, they are taken home by parents or guardians. "Nobody's allowed to leave until someone comes for them," Borello said. "The main purpose of the program is to keep kids off the streets and give them a lifetime activity they can do. The emphasis is on fun, not winning and losing." The program has grown from 200 to 450 students, most of whom are repeat participants in the bumper and regular leagues. "There's a method to the madness," Borello said. "Once you get them going in bowling, you create adult-child leagues. We want families doing things together."

Extractions: PTA vs. PTO What is the difference between a PTA (Parent-Teacher Association) and a PTO (Parent-Teacher Organization)? Why are we a PTA? Before we get to the differences we should first acknowledge the similarities. Both PTAs and PTOs bring parents and educators together for the benefit of the children. They share many of the same goals and use many of the same strategies. A PTO is an independent unit, not associated with the State and National PTAs. As an independent unit a PTO has more flexibility in its charter, bylaws and organization. It also does not have to pay dues to any State or National organization. A PTA is affiliated with both the State and National PTA and pays dues to both. In return we receive a wealth of information, resources, and training opportunities from them. As members of a group with affiliates at schools throughout Pennsylvania and the Nation, we gain a stronger voice in influencing public policy. In addition, through the State PTA we receive insurance that covers all PTA-sponsored events. The schools insurance does not cover these events and PTOs must obtain very expensive policies or risk being without insurance, a decision that places all members at risk. Both PTAs and PTOs are filled with dedicated citizens proud of all they do to help all our children. At Norwin we feel that we gain much more from being a PTA than it costs us.
