The relatives said Larry, 32, acted as if he were in a "post-hypnotic trance" as he was drawn further into the Peoples Temple, which he joined in 1968. Shortly before he traveled to Guyana, his father recalled, Larry showed up at the family's East Bay home one afternoon dressed in a full surgical gown and promptly dived into the backyard swimming pool.

Extractions: By Leigh Rich Seductive Poison: A Jonestown Survivor's Story of Life and Death in the Peoples Temple , by Deborah Layton (Doubleday, Anchor Books). Hardcover, $23.95. NOVEMBER 18, 1978 Buried inconspicuously in a remote part of Guyana, 913 members living in the Jonestown "commune" commit mass suicide. Some drink the cyanide-laced Flavour-Aide voluntarily; others are forced at gunpoint. No one is spared. Not even Jim Jones, the "reverend" who deceitfully enticed his followers of the Peoples Temple to this so-called "Promised Land." A man who robbed, raped and tortured his disciples into submission. A man self-proclaimed the reincarnation of Jesus but, for many, now remembered as the devil. Few were closer to Jones than Deborah Layton, a high-ranking Peoples Temple official for nearly a decade and survivor of one of the most baffling tragedies in recent history. Layton's story of escape, bravely recounted in Seductive Poison , unravels the riddles of Jonestown from the inside and documents the rise and fall of one of America's most notorious cult leaders. Executed with precision and emotion, Layton's book serves dual purposes: One, to emphasize how intelligent and independent individuals can become engrossed in a cult; and, two, to educate government officials on the ins-and-outs of cult life so future incidents can be controlled appropriately.

It is bordered by Venezuela to the northwest, Brazil on the west and south and by Surinam on the east. Its northern border is the Atlantic Ocean. Seventy percent of Guyana is made up of tropical rain forest. It rains 80 to 100 inches a year and daytime temperatures approach 100 degrees. Guyana has much natural beauty, many rivers and waterfalls, but many Americans do not think about beauty when they think about Guyana. They think about Jim Jones and the deaths by murder or suicide of 913 members of his Peoples Temple Full Gospel Church 20 years ago. Peoples Temple was founded in 1956 in Indianapolis as an integrated church combining religion and socialist politics. Jim Jones claimed a healing ministry which attracted many members. The church became a part of the Disciples of Christ in 1961 and Jones was ordained by that denomination in 1964. In 1965, Jones moved Peoples Temple to the San Francisco area, which he thought would be safe in case of nuclear war. It was also during this time that an organization of concerned relatives was formed in response to reports of beatings and other punishments inflicted on members by Jones and the Temple's leaders. As allegations of wrongdoing increased, Jones moved the Temple to Jonestown, Guyana to escape his perceived threat of media and police persecution.

Ryan From AP and the Boston Globe , December 2, 1986 "This man was a killer," US Attorney Joseph Russoneillo told reporters after the verdict, who took part in the plot "because he was a believer." The court found that Layton was involved in a plan to keep Rep. Ryan and his party from reaching the outside world with news of conditions at Jonestown. Layton admitted shooting and wounding two dissident Peoples Temple members who were trying to leave with Ryan. The verdict, which came after 25 hours of deliberation, did not visibly upset Layton, who instead consoled his lawyers before being led away by federal marshals. The defendant, whose first trial ended in a hung jury in 1981, had been free on bail and working under an alias. Chief U.S. District Judge Robert Peckham scheduled sentencing for January 23; the Ryan murder charges carry a maximum penalty of life in prison. Defense attorneys said that they would appeal the conviction. cultinfobooks publications Cultic Studies Review csj ... AFF, Inc

Charismatic Leaders harshly criticised defectors from the peoples temple, perceiving them was what leadto the mass suicide of over some of his followers at jonestown became upset http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Lab/1590/essays/leader.htm
Extractions: A charismatic leader can be defined as someone who (1) recruits their own following, (2) develops and sustains highly personal relationships with their followers and (3) authors the normative visions that function as the mandates for the group or movement that they lead1. The path of the 'seeker'2 can sometimes lead people to put their faith and trust in a charismatic leader, such as in the case of Jim Jones and the Peoples Temple, and there are a number of factors which may contribute to making this choice an unwise one. Problems can arise when adherents express commitment not to the religious or social ideals of the group, but instead show reverence to their charismatic leaders. This devotion has the tendency to become a problem if the leader begins to show any of the following characteristics. Firstly, the leader begins to expect his followers to make what outsiders see as "inordinate sacrifices for the group"3. Jim Jones expected much of his followers, and perhaps the most obvious sacrifice he asked them to make was to give up their money, their families and their lives in America to join him at his retreat in Guyana, which he called "Jonestown".? Second, the leader becomes isolated from his followers, appropriating luxuries for themselves that are denied to group members. Perhaps more than appropriating luxuries, Jones appropriated paranormal powers. He isolated himself by claiming to be the one true embodiment of God, and claimed to possess, among other things, psychic powers and the power to raise the dead4.

Keith, I would like you to start with your own story and experience in the realm of cults. You were the educational counselor for the survivors of Jonestown, the first notorious mass cult suicide. Can you fill us on how you came to travel that path, and, in the process set the scene for the Jonestown tragedy so we have some context?
