One of the predominant concepts of geography as a science is that it examines relationships between peoples and their environments in holistic terms. In the particular subfield of medical geography the focus is upon those interactions that bear specifically upon human health within a variety of cultural systems and a diverse biosphere. Regarding geographic method, the main tool is spatial analysis. Where disease occurs is a matter of importance. The map on the right illustrates the spread of an influenza epidemic in Glasgow. Comparison of disease rates in different places may provide clues to causation or serve as a starting point for further investigation. Maps showing distributional patterns of health-related phenomena with their accompanying associative analyses bring insight and strategy for better public health. A famous example of an old partnership between geography and epidemiology is the work of Dr. John Snow in the middle of the 19th century, who backed up his hunch that cholera was spread by infected water supplies by making a map of victims in a part of 19th century London (shown at right). This was during the days when medical opinion ascribed the disease to 'miasmas' and other emanations from the swamps and mud of the Thames River. His map showed a cluster of cases centered on a public water pump. This spatial association was used to eliminate the source of infection. The causative agent of cholera

Man is challenged to survive in this environment. The Andes rise 6,000 meter or 19,700 feet above sea level, separating the Pacific Ocean and the Amazon jungle basin. From the depths of the Peru-Chile trench just off the Peruvian coast to the Andean peaks is a difference in altitude of more than 40,000 feet within a distance of 50 miles. The chilly currents of the Pacific Ocean that flow out of the Peru-Chile Trench supercharges the coastal air with humidity, inhibiting rainfall.     Extractions: William Bennett Peru Expedition : Tue 18 July 11:56:12 2000 Sunday 16 July Two years of preparation finally came to fruition today as we left Heathrow for Lima, Peru, via Madrid. It took us seven and a half hours to cross the Atlantic - nothing to see but the sea! We crossed the coast of Brazil at 1.30pm and were treated to amazing views of Amazonia, which stretched endlessly away into the distance: virtually flat and crossed by many rivers. The rivers looked huge, even from 35,000 feet, and we saw fantastic meanders and ox-bow lakes in all stages of formation! The Amazon itself dwarfed the other rivers and was sandy red in colour from the silt it was carrying from the ferralitic soils in the Amazon Basin. The plume of silt stretched miles out to sea as we crossed the coast. It took us nearly four hours to cross the rainforest! The clouds started to bubble up as soon as we crossed the coast, and by mid-afternoon we were flying through the tops of huge cumulonimbus clouds, which caused lots of turbulence on the plane.

Its total area, including its islands on the Pacific Ocean and on the Titicaca lake is 1.285.216 sq. km. (2.5 times France ); with a coast line of 3.079,5 km and a maritime domain of 200 miles along the coast. Its relief is complete and varied but it isn't showed on the coast, on the mountain plains or on the Andean tops, down the valley of the upper forest and on the huge Amazon plain. It has also large contrasts, with a very uneven topographical relief on the Andean slopes; on the high mountain areas that exceed the Altiplano (covered or not with eternal glaciers snow); and on the abrupt geography of the area before the forest.
