Project Management Reservoir Analysis In order to plan for the most efficient depletion of a reservoir, the engineer must examine and reconcile the results of thermodynamic, geological, and petrophysical studies. Thermodynamic studies consider the expected phase behaviour of the reservoir fluids at various pressure and temperature conditions. Petrophysical studies consider the patterns of fluid flow observed within a reservoir and account for the horizontal or vertical discontinuities of such things as porosity and permeability within the reservoir. The geological description of the reservoir results in the formulation of a complete picture regarding depositional environment and post depositional history. Core and log information and production tests are also used facilitate decisions regarding the development and operation of oil and gas reserves.

Wellbores are holes drilled into the earth, usually cased with metal or pipe, for the production of gas or oil. The hole is used for the injection, under pressure, of water or gas into a rock formation below the surface. "Technology to drill oil and gas wells is advancing very rapidly, but completion and drill fluids haven't been," Burnett said. "These devices allow us to test wellbores in a special way. If we can model them (wellbores) rather than using trial and error, then we can test different ways to drill formations in a lab. If we can test them in a lab, then we can model them in a field more closely, and do it faster." The modeling devices duplicate the conditions of wellbores without using artificial support systems, such as screens, which can affect the integrity of the test. Because of this, the effect that drilling in mud and fluids can have on formations now can be studied as never before.

Once these are discovered, petroleum engineers work with geologists and other specialists to understand the geologic formation and properties of the rock containing the reservoir, determine the drilling methods to be used, and monitor drilling and production operations. They design equipment and processes to achieve the maximum profitable recovery of oil and gas. Petroleum engineers rely heavily on computer models to simulate reservoir performance using different recovery techniques. They also use computer models for simulations of the effects of various drilling options. Because only a small proportion of oil and gas in a reservoir will flow out under natural forces, petroleum engineers develop and use various enhanced recovery methods. These include injecting water, chemicals, gases, or steam into an oil reservoir to force out more of the oil, and computer-controlled drilling or fracturing to connect a larger area of a reservoir to a single well. Because even the best techniques in use today recover only a portion of the oil and gas in a reservoir, petroleum engineers research and develop technology and methods to increase recovery and lower the cost of drilling and production operations.
