According to the Slam website (www.philosophyslam.org), "Each year a philosophical topic is chosen and students from 1st grade through 12th express their views on the philosophical topic posed." This years topic is a real humdinger: "Is the nature of humankind good or evil." Any student, from anywhere, can enter. All you have to do is choose good or evil and explain whyin 500 words or less. Instead of the 500-word essay, kids in grades 1-4 can write a story, draw or paint a picture, or use a combination of words and pictures to express their thoughts. Theres no entry fee. And all entries must be postmarked by January 21. Kids Philosophy Slam is the brainchild of the man who created the Great American Think Off in 1993, John P. Davis. The Think Off was similar to the Slam, and finalists debated their question in front of a live audience. Davis received so many entries for the Think Off from kids that he decided to create a contest specifically for them.
