Extractions: WHEN MARAUDING invaders attacked Roman strongholds on the continent, Rome (Magnus Maximus in 383, Stilicho in 402, and Constantine III in 407) summoned troops stationed in Britain to fight. In time, the two Roman legions left Britain permanently, leaving the island at the mercy of barbarian attacks. Soon the Britons expelled the remaining Roman officers. THE PELAGIAN heresy took hold in Britain, in about 420-430, dividing the population into factions. Bishop Germanus was sent to deal with the heresy.

Extractions: Picts Picts, ancient inhabitants of central and N Scotland, of uncertain origin. First mentioned ( A.D. 297) by the Roman writer Eumenius as northern invaders of Roman Britain, they were probably descendants of late Bronze Age and early Iron Age invaders of Britain. Their language is thought to have been a superimposition of Celtic on a pre-Celtic and non-Indo-European language, but there is no undisputed interpretation of it or their culture. By the early 7th cent. there was a unified Pictish kingdom north of a line from the Clyde to the Forth rivers. It apparently had a matrilinear system of succession and had probably adopted Celtic Christianity. To the south of the Picts, Scottish invaders from Ireland had established the kingdom of Dalriada in the 5th cent. Between 843 and 850 Kenneth I , king of Dalriada, established himself also as king of the Picts, although how and why is not clear. The kingdom of Alba thus formed became the kingdom of Scotland.

Extractions: The Picts were a fascinating late prehistoric/early Celtic people living in areas of Scotland. They still live there they've simply been assimilated by the Scots (from Ireland) who settled there and brought in their own language and many of their own customs. This is only the preliminary portion of the Pictish Pages here, and is *very* incomplete! Feedback, comments, and corrections are solicited by Jehana I first became aware (more than vaguely academically) of the Picts during a summer vacation spent in Scotland during the summer of '95. I stumbled into Pictish carvings in the museum in Edinburgh which triggered something in me. A few days later I picked a train destination at random, and spent an uplifting, amazing time in the town of Arbroath. On the outskirts of that town is a collection of Pictish stones, housed unpretentiously and simply near the church upon whose grounds they'd been obtained. Somehow, I felt that I'd made "connection", with that time period, whatever this means. (I'll base some speculations upon that connection, but I won't ever promote such speculations as definitive proof, I promise. I'm a scientist I know better.) These sensations and connections persisted throughout my stay, and they revolved around the ancient Picts. I've been reading and thinking about them ever since. (As far as I know, I have no Pictish nor Scottish blood myself.)

Extractions: The term "Anglo-Saxons" is the common name for the various peoples who migrated from Denmark and Northern Germany to Britain about AD 450. The land was inhabited by Roman settlers and those who had been living there since the "Stone Age" ( for example those who built Stonehenge). Different warlords conquered pieces of the land, so by the 7th century England was divided into several Germanic kingdoms, as you can see on the map. The Anglo-Saxon rule ended with the Danish King Swein (Svend) and his son Canute's (Knud) conquering of most of England in 1014. After the Norman invasion (1066), Anglo-Saxon tradition slowly died. Their Religion: The Anglo-Saxons practised a polytheistic Nordic religion. But the Anglo-Saxons were also influenced by the Celtic Christian missions sent out from Northumbria, where the Irish church had set up a diocese at
