Extractions: Click for Gallery Archives Stephen Salniker created our ninth Photo Gallery with a whole new perspective. He uses a camera with no lens, as primitive, yet evocative as the earlies photos ever taken in the mid 1800s. He started doing pinhole work at age 15 because he did not have an enlarger. He found, after reading an article in Popular Photography, that he could get a large image by building his own camera and using enlarging paper in place of film. That gave him a paper negative, which he then contact printed to make a positive image. Almost three decades later, Steve continues to make pinhole images. Today he has an enlarger, but still prefers working with large-format negatives. He currently has four cameras that he uses regularly. He prefers "palladium" printing techniques for making black and white prints because he says he gets a wider range of tones in the finished print. The color images here were scanned from 8" x 10" color positives, that came directly out one of Steve's many pinhole cameras. Steve used the back end of an old view camera that he built into a pinhole camera using a cardboard front. The black and white images came from 8" x 10" negatives that were shot in a hand-made Masonite camera. Steve notes that anyone can make a pinhole camera from virtually any object that is light-tight from a Quaker oatmeal box to a shoe box. One artist even made a pinhole camera from a Volkswagen bus, he says. Taking a Polaroid camera, removing the lens, and replacing it with a pinhole is great way to make instant pinhole pictures.

Extractions: Within pinhole photography there is a simplicity in photography. This uncomplicated beauty is what attracted me to the art of photography in the first place. Now, I escape to this elementary place whenever I can. I run from my computer, scanner, Nikons and Hassleblads to this mysterious and enchanted world of the pinhole and photography. For me, it is a way of meditating, of centering myself and my love of imagery. The attractiveness of the pinhole camera's form and charm of approach lead undeniably towards an uncomplicated corroboration between camera and subject. The learned disciplines of the pinhole camera lead to a mysterious quality photograph. From light falloff to infinite depth of field and long exposures, the image's presence is almost eerie in its aberration from traditional photographic processes. Light reflected from any point on a subject will pass through a small hole and produce a slightly diffuse image (image circle) of that point. The accumulated overlapping image-circles form the total image. Pinhole images are necessarily slightly blurred about their soft focus appearance is often quite pleasing. A lens, unlike a pinhole sharpens rather than diffuses an image. The pinhole camera is great for handcoloring since you can make a big print to start with. Extractions: Urban Anthropology is a photographic analysis examining conditions of contemporary urban environments. Using only a pinhole camera and focusing on the history of structure, relics of our past are considered as they exist today. Their influence on the circumstance of urban society is scrutinized through the visual challenge of photography. The substance of the images is a record of existing urban position. Project Scope The project was begun in St. Louis, Missouri in 1995 and focused on the abandonment of the downtown urban environment. Suburban sprawl has run rampant as over 10% of city residents have packed their bags since 1990 and headed for the lifestyles of suburban development. Left in the wake of exodus are the historical remnants of a once thriving urban community. The work of quality craftsmen and artisans abandoned for strip malls and mass produced domiciles. The Urban Anthropology seeks out these forgotten places and examines what they have and are becoming. Who is left behind as caretaker of these surroundings, and their interactions there are quite incidental to this project. The appearance of human form is sparse in the images, although when needed, figures do lend further significance to the singularity of the recorded situation.

Extractions: This set of pictures were taken with a Lensless Camera Manufacturing Company pinhole camera. This is a 4x5 camera with the equivalent of a 75mm f/228 lens. These are a bit under exposed because I thought the pinhole was f/181. The pictures were taken on Polaroid Type 53 film (ASA 800) using a Polaroid 545i holder. I now have access to a HP Deskscan 3c, so these scans are much better. This set of images were taken as part of a large format class in order to compare the quality of images taken with a pinhole to those take with a lens. The camera used was a Calumet 45N, and the film was Polaroid Type 55. These are a few pinhole images from the Greenmarket at Union Sqaure taken during Fall 1995. Extractions: A traditional pinhole camera is just a box with a small hole in one side opposite a piece of light-sensitive film on the other. Since the hole is small, a recognizable image is formed on the film. The device beautifully illustrates photography in its most simple form. Because film is easily exposed by stray light, the process of sealing the camera, loading film into it and processing the film can be difficult. The following technique can be used to create a pinhole camera out of any regular film camera that has interchangeable lenses. The result is a pinhole camera that uses regular 35mm film, takes multiple pictures without reloading, and can even meter the light. Cameras are usually shipped with a round cap covering the lens mount on the front of the camera. (If you're missing this cap, or you would prefer not to modify your current one, then you can probably order a new one from the manufacturer.) This cap can be turned into a pinhole lens for the camera as follows. First, drill a 1/4 inch hole through the middle of the cap. Get a piece of black metal foil (or use a magic marker to color a piece of regular tin foil black) and then tape the tin foil over the hole. Lastly, create a small hole through the center of the foil with a pin. Remove the camera's lens and place the modified lens mount cover on the camera. You now have a 35mm, single-lens-reflex, auto-exposure, auto-advance, pinhole camera. It will look something like the picture at the top of this page, on the left. This year WPPD3 keeps faithful to the global vision of its founders: to create a grassroots egalitarian event open to anybody, anywhere who is interested in pinhole photography and is willing to share their personal and magical views of the world.
