Public schools begin hiring in March and continue on through Labor Day. The greater the shortage of teachers, the earlier a district is likely to recruit. In fact, many of the best openings occur right before the start of school. Nevertheless, you can begin your search early by thinking about the kinds of places you want to work and researching these (including obtaining information about application procedures, which vary from district to district even within a state.) While some teaching vacancies remain particularly in the areas of special education and elementary education most school systems say they're doing better than last year, and hope to have all or most positions filled by the time students start class. "The goal is to fill all of them," said Dan Cochran, executive director of personnel services for the Fulton County schools, which had 142 teacher and staff vacancies as of late July. "We are in better shape than we were this time last year."

Extractions: Did you know? The Advising Resources @ Columbia Web site contains valuable information that could help you Has your research indicated that a graduate degree is needed to attain your career goals? Is graduate school what you have always imagined your next step to be? If graduate school is a possibility sometime in your future, this next section will highlight some important points to consider. Graduate school is an extensive commitment of time, money, and hard work. It is not a plan in and of itself; it is merely a step in a plan. Before making a commitment to graduate school, examine your long-term goals, both personally and professionally. Why do you want to attend graduate school? Do you feel that it will make you more marketable? How? Do you lack direction and feel that graduate school will give you direction? Do you want to study a particular subject for your own knowledge? Are you using it as a fallback choice or to make your parents happy? Think about the true answers to these questions and make your decisions accordingly. It is important to consider what you imagine doing after graduate school. Is a graduate degree required for that field? How will it help you achieve your goals? Should you go straight to graduate school or take time in between to work? Find the answers to these questions by gathering as much information as possible. Talk to current students and graduates of the programs that interest you, as well as to people working in that career field. Speak with as many people as possible to get a complete picture. Try not to base your decision on any one person's opinion or experience. Conduct extensive research before committing to a program.

Which Level? activities, such as local science fairs, competitions, and High school students arethinking more about possible science teachers may do much more than teach. http://www2.nsta.org/careers/which_level.asp
Extractions: Site map In the elementary grades, many children get a chance to explore the world of science for the very first time. Students are curious and ask many questions. Teachers are their guides and advisors. So it is important for teachers to resist the temptation to give answers and instead give children time to try to discover things on their own. Most elementary teachers teach all subjects in the curriculum to the same group of students each day. This arrangement is called a "self-contained classroom." Far less often at this level, science is taught by a science specialist, who as the name implies, specializes in science and usually does not teach other subjects. In either case, science is taught every day or perhaps only a couple of days a week. Although hands-on activities are important at every grade level, they are especially effective in helping young students understand science topics. Children think in a very concrete way, so they need to see science in action. For example, an activity in which children watch raindrops form in a jar helps them understand that air contains water even though they can't see it. Elementary teachers must be extremely patient because it takes the youngest students longer to understand things that adults take for granted.
