It is in the light of this that one welcomes the first authoritative book on polymers chemistry in Nigeria today. Written by Nigeria's first female polymers chemist Mrs. Moji Afsat Bello, Polymers: The Chemistry and Technology of Modern Materials presents a basic understanding of polymers for all manner of readers, especially science and engineering undergraduates hoping to specialise polymers technology, textile technology or any of the engineering courses in the high institutions of learning. The book presents itself as an easy read to all level of readers. It's plot is well structured with the chapters succeeding one another logically in a linear progression of thought in the study of polymers. It contains 12 chapters in all. Each chapter focuses on particular aspects of polymers chemistry taking the reader logically through the various milestones in the study of polymers. This style makes it for readers not familiar with and whose knowledge of the subject is limited to some generalities to grasp the author's arguments easily. Chapter one takes the reader through a brisk overview of the evolution of polymer science even extending its area of coverage to preliminary comments on recent developments in the history and evolution of the subject. The author opines that polymers "are as old as creation," since some essentials of existence including proteins such as wool, silk, leather, muscle fibres and enzymes are natural polymers. She expresses that "early work on polymers began by accident."

We are focussed on enhancing the cell-material interaction through controlled polymer chemistry and engineering. The defining characteristic of neurodegenerative diseases, such as spinal cord injury, is the inability of injured nerve cells to repair themselves or regrow. The consequences of spinal cord injury are devastating, resulting in dramatically reduced communication between the brain and the periphery. In bridging polymer science and neuroscience, we are designing a nerve regeneration system that combines polymer synthesis/processing, drug delivery and surface modification. Specifically, we are investigating different methods of enhancing and guiding nerve regeneration and incorporating these methods into devices for in vivo investigations.
