A few new moms1 in 1,000suffer a complete break with reality, post-partum psychosis. That's what happened in 1984 to Nancy Berchtold, of Morrisville, Pennsylvania, after the birth of her daughter, Alison. Seventeen days post-partum, she became delusional, and had to be hospitalized. Post-partum depression has been recognized since ancient times. In 460 B.C., Hippocrates described it. Other descriptions have turned up from time to time since then. But the condition has become widely publicized only within the past 15 years.

Extractions: [from an MD] I have never treated a patient with full-blown post-partum psychosis, but I have treated many cases of post-partum depression, and four cases of recurrent PMS psychosis, with very large injections of IM natural progesterone. The results have been nothing short of astounding. This whole thing was very upsetting to me because it ran specifically against my training, which held that PMS was a manifestation of women's inability to cope with their own sexuality/fertility. None of my female classmates ever protested that interpretation, and I never really thought about it because it didn't seem important. But this case demanded a reconstruction of the whole thing, because no other psychosis I had ever seen, responded so completely and rapidly to treatment. This was a seminal event in rejecting quite a bit of my training. Since then, I have had 3 other cases of recurrent PMS psychosis, all of whom stopped having psychotic breaks abruptly upon using progesterone. Since Dalton has insisted that post-partum depression was related to PMS, I tried treating it with progesterone as well. The results have seemed good to me.

Williamson, Special to Counseling Today A s a counselor, I was familiar with the term post-partum depression, but I was unaware of the depth of the disorder until I experienced it after the birth of my third child. I am a doctoral student at Northern Illinois University and took a semester off to have my baby. I had no idea how incapacitated I would become as a result of the disorder. Counselors need to be aware of this condition and its far reaching effects. Many women who experience post-partum mood disorders seek help from professional counselors and psychologists who are not familiar with this condition. Some of these women are told they don't really love their child or they did not really want the baby. Other women choose to suffer in silence, afraid to talk about what is happening in fear of losing her child or being labeled "crazy." There are very few counselors who specialize in this disorder. However, up to 80 percent of women experience what is sometimes called the "baby blues" and up to 20 percent of women experience post-partum depression. Counselors need to be familiar with the symptoms and treatment. There is also a small percentage of women who experience post-partum psychosis, but is far less common and usually occurs with in the first 48 hours of post-partum. The baby blues are different from post-partum mood disorders in that the baby blues usually subside within a few weeks and do not lead to an inability to function. In post-partum depression, a women's symptoms interfere with her ability to function in her daily life. The condition can start any time during the first post-partum year and, if left untreated, can linger for several years. In my own situation, I was lucky enough to live in an area which has the only assessment and treatment program in the state of Illinois.

Many new moms feel trapped at home with the baby, but also feel "good moms" don’t turn their infant’s care over to a babysitter. Handle it; a few hours out can work wonders. Be her supporter, and continue to reassure her of your love and what a great job she is doing. If your wife experiences symptoms of serious post-partum depression, you want to take matters into your own hands. 1st, find a way to take care of your baby. 2nd, get professional help for your wife, immediately. Talk to an experienced counselor or to your physician. Continue to support and love her through this. Take it seriously, and she will get through it. Extractions: In the News: Post-Partum Depression With the recent case of a Texas mother who allegedly drowned her five children in a bathtub, post-partum depression (PPD) has been in the news. Speaking to the press, her husband claimed that Andrea Yates was suffering from severe PPD , and that was what led her to allegedly commit the tragic act. Though all the facts are not in, and her motives are not known, many in the media accept that PPD was what drove Ms. Yates over the edge. Only one news story has appeared that states that perhaps PPD was not to blame. Being a new parent can be overwhelming, it is a mix of joy, excitement, and even a little sadness, as your old way of life becomes part of the past and a new way of life begins. A new baby can turn your world upside down. It is even worse when you lack a support system of family and friends nearby who can lend you a hand. Becoming accustomed to having a tiny person who is completely dependent on you for everything is hard, coupled with lack of sleep; recuperation from labor, delivery or c-section; hormonal changes; frustration with breastfeeding; and the feeling that we have to somehow "do it all" can be a lot to deal with, no matter how many times you go through it. We do not claim to have any magic answers, or even to know what would lead a mother to believe that killing her children is the only answer. What we would like to do is present the warning signs of the "baby blues," post partum depression, and puerperal psychosis. Perhaps by giving information about these conditions, we can encourage any mother who believes she is suffering to ask for help and seek treatment.

A little sadness is normal; it's called the 'baby blues.' Those feelings typically go away in a few weeks with a little help from good diet, exercise and time for yourself. But if the sad feelings do not go away, it could be a sign of postpartum depression, a condition affecting one in ten women during the year after they give birth. Friends or family members may suggest a 'therapeutic' shopping trip; they may even tell you, "Just snap out of it!" But you can't DECIDE to recover from depression, any more than you can DECIDE to recover from heart disease or other illnesses. Doctors think postpartum depression may be linked to the hormonal changes of pregnancy and childbirth. Stressful events in your life-a difficult marriage, a recent move or job change, a sick baby-all these things can make things even harder on you.
