Extractions: Prince Edward County is a historic Loyalist community, settled by United Empire Loyalists fleeing the American Revolution, and our modern history dates back to 1790. The County offers a wealth of stories and unique architecture from humble to grand, some of which is celebrated in the handsome coffee table book, The Settlers Dream. We have had a checkered history, and many of the seemingly tall tales you will hear about us are true. With easy access to Great Lakes trade routes, Prince Edward County enjoyed a prosperous shipbuilding and commercial shipping industry in the 1800s. In the early 20th century when temperance groups held sway in North America, the County was perfectly placed for "rum-running." This risky but lucrative business employed an astonishing number of County residents. The Loyalist Parkway that runs for miles along the shoreline of Prince Edward County is two hundred years old. Also known as highway 33, the Loyalist Parkway is part of the old Danforth Road that began construction in 1798, and it runs from Trenton to Kingston. Entering the County at Carrying Place and exiting at Glenora Ferry on its way to Kingston, the road has been considerably improved since its rough start in 1800! As a scenic alternative to the 401 it can't be beat.

A Great Place To Live - Arts And Culture the heart of central Ontario It's eerie, really, the way prince edward County, part Theyknow, for example, that both are islands filled with pictureperfect http://www.greatplacetolive.com/fromaway.htm
Extractions: I Just shy of 50, both former advertising executives from Toronto, the Flecks are well aware of the parallels between their rural home and its Atlantic counterpart. They know, for example, that both are islands filled with picture-perfect farms, fertile fields, charming villages and gabled century homes. Each summer season, both depend on sandy beaches and breezy shores to lure sailors, cottagers and assorted holidayers from around the world. And both believe themselves to be a world apart-with a history, a pride and a way of life that has been shaped by separation. "Picture-perfect farms, fertile fields, charming villages and gabled century homes" What Pete and Nancy also know, however, is that their small-scale "County" version of Prince Edward is smack-dab in the centre of Canada's economic heart. Though their guests may look out on a Holstein grazing on the fence-line back of the Inn, or arrive flushed from a biking tour of the antique shops and millpond just up the road, they are only minutes away from Belleville and its link to the busy Southern Ontario corridor. Just 3 hours from Montreal, 2 ½ from Ottawa, 2 from Toronto and a little over 1 hour to the U.S. border, Prince Edward County juts scenically into Lake Ontario south of a mainland that stretches along Highway 401 from Trenton (Quinte West) to Napanee.

Extractions: e-mail this story to a friend WHATEVER . . . Ruth Walker CHARLOTTETOWN, PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND Insularity gets a bad rap. That, you might say, is the premise behind the Institute of Island Studies at the University of Prince Edward Island here. "The challenge of insularity," says Jane Ledwell, conference coordinator for the institute, "is, how do we make the most of what we do have? We've had an opportunity to learn a lot about how much we have here: the richness of the land and the sea and the people." The institute, which studies the culture, environment, and economy of small islands - always with an emphasis on Prince Edward Island itself - last month launched an official academic minor in island studies. STAFF Courses in the interdisciplinary program range from "Land Use on Prince Edward Island" to "Literature of Atlantic Canada" to "Small States and Micro-States in the International System." Dr. Godfrey Baldacchino, a visiting expert from the University of Malta, is teaching a course this summer called "A Sociology for Small Islands," looking at such questions as the social dynamics of small groups and an island's relationship with "away," aka "the mainland."
