In 1999 Rosa Parks was honored with the Congressional Gold Medal of Honor for being the "Mother of the Modern Day Civil Rights Movement."I still remember being stunned by the news because I could not believe that it had taken forty-four years to honor the woman whose refusal to give up her bus seat to a white passenger in Montgomery, Alabama, on December 5, 1955, triggered a black boycott of the city's bus system.The boycott lasted 381 days and eventually led to laws that ended legalized segregation.You have to go back to the Boston Tea Party to find an act of defiance that is as important in American history and if there is any one citizen who deserves the Congressional Gold Medal of Honor it would have to be Rosa Parks.

The opening section presents "The Most Commonly Asked Questions From Letters to Mrs. Parks" such as "How old are you?" and "Do you have any children?" The letters and Mrs. Parks' responses are divided into five categories: I. It's impressive how much National Geographic can squeeze into a small book. Each entry tells how big the park is, describes its flavor, indicates when it's best to go and how to get there, and includes an elegantly useful map. National Park Must Have
This book has real nice full color pictures, maps of the parks and good details. It does not have all the parks but all the big well known parks are in it.

We originally owned an older edition of this book and just purchased this to replace it.We have been to many National Parks over the years and have found this guide to be the best one out there.The drives as listed are fantastic... you won't miss anything if you have this book along with you!

Outstanding Resource
I obtained the first edition of this book over ten years ago, and have kept that along with the latest edition in my book collection ever since.At that time I had never been to a national park, but this little book insipired me to visit 35 of them, volunteer in two, and work seasonally as a ranger at one.

This book is packed with useful and interesting information about each of the parks, and it is a pleasure to read even when not planning a trip.I highly recommend it.

Best comprehensive guide to the national parks
We recently purchased this book just before our four-national-parks tour.The book not only gives you an overview of the parks, practical information such as how to get there, and nearby lodging etc., it has very good recommendation of must-see stops, and different levels of hikes you can take and what to expect.We used the book at every park and it helped us effectively use our time and it is a joy to read even without going to the parks.

Beauty at the Margins
This 1992 books visit some of the newer National Parks in the United States.Traveling in a great loop around the nation's edges we encounter North Cascades NP in Washington state on the Canadian border, Voyageurs NP along the lakes that divide Minnesota and Ontario, Theodore Roosevelt NP in the North Dakota badlands, Channel Islands NP off the California coast, Guadalupe Mountains NP in west Texas (where the Chihuahuan Desert meets the hills), Biscayne NP on Florida's Atlantic coast (more under water than above), and finally over four million acres of Alaskan lakes, mountains and coastline in Katmai NP.

When I got this book, I wasn't expecting much - - still, I wanted to see what it had to say, because for me, a trip to the dog park can be just as fun as stressful. - - I have a very small poodle, and always worry about his safety.- - Within moments of getting it, I have to say, I realized that I picked a good book... especially when I got to the chapter that includes training tips to prepare your dog for a trip to the dog park.(- - I've put a lot of time and effort into training my dog, but the book presents some really useful ideas I had never thought of myself...)As an added bonus, the book is full of ideas that simply don't seem to be "floating around the net" (This is a shortcoming of buying books these days... I hate it when I buy a book and find out I could have gotten the same information off of WIKIPEDIA!)

Well written, the book is substantive, yet short of "fluff" and has an excellent further reading session.I also like the layout of the book - - its very straightforward and well done... not a lot of goofy graphics, fillers and "white space" - - you open the book, you read the 127 pages comfortably ... and if you've got a highlight pen, can walk away with lot's and lot's of stuff to think about as you get ready for your next trip.

Topics include: suggestions of who should and shouldn't use a dog park; dog park design and safety, rules and etiquette; training issues;understanding canine temperament body language; conflict resolution and health issues. Essential for Communities establishing Dog Parks
this book is a useful reference for both the general public and for councils/communities establishing dog parks and for those that are already established.

very well written and researched - the dog park ettique guidelines and the body language sections are essential reading in my opinion. I feel too many dog people go to these parks in total ignorance as to proper ettique and K9 body language.

Dog Park planning
I am in the process of organizing a group to have a Free Run Dog Park built in Anderson County SC.I have excellent planning documents from Barkingham park in Florida and some additional input.I purchased this book as a guide to writing rules & recommendations for potential users.It will serve that purpose well, but it is an even better source of ideas for the layout and planning of our own park.As part of our project we intend to donate several copies of the book to our county library and post that information with the rules.

Finally have a dog park? Get this book and be prepared!
If you finally have a dog park coming near you and you want to
take your dog(s) to the park for some off leash fun, get this
book to prepare beforehand. Cheryl covers what to look for in a
good dog park - rules, park etiquette (yours and your dog),
openings, landscaping and clean-up.

Cheryl also covers different personality types in dogs and
which dog may want to stay home rather than go to the park.

There's also a very cool section of scenarios to see if you can
tell what is going on in different dog interactions. Don't
worry if you don't get them all right, it takes practice
reading dog body language.

There's a whole chapter that acts as a checklist for those who
enjoy making sure they have all the details to prepare for a
good experience with their dog. What to wear - you and your

A really good book

I was surprised that I liked this book; I didn't even want to read it. I guess I thought it would be boring. My Mom told me we had studied this during Black History Month last year in first grade, but I didn't remember.

This book was a story about Rosa Parks, who some say started the civil rights movement because she would not give up her seat on the bus. I learned about black history and segregation. Rosa Parks probably thought it was really unfair how she and all the other black people were treated. If I was her I would feel mad!

I'm happy I read "I Am Rosa Parks.". I think it is a really good book for kids my age. It was a little hard to read with all of the big new words I learned. But it told me a lot about Rosa's life in the South when things weren't so good for black people.

A Beautiful Book.
This book shows the history of Mount Rainier National Park, from Sunset to Paradise. The photos are great and the paragraphs are informative and don't run on. The book also goes into the history of the 14,411 foot Stratovolcano, and how 5,600 years ago, the peak was at 16,500 feet, but a major eruption caused a massive collapse and created the peak we know, love and cherish today.

Great book
This book was a huge help in planning our first trip to California.I love to hike and wanted a better description of each park than the California State Parks website offered.This book delivered, we had a fantastic time and knew exactly what each park had to offer. It was our first time seeing the Redwood trees (totally awesome) and knew in advance which parks had the tallest trees, and gave background information on each park as well. This is a must have for anyone wishing to visit the State parks (state beaches as well).

not much for camping infomation
I wish this book covered camping information better.So I do not have to buy another book for that. I would like less words about how the sunlight glistens through the trees ,and more about facilities ,the size of camp sites and if trailers or RVs allowed and what size .(20ft) 25 - 30 or just car camping.

Great book that should be brought on all California road trips.There are good descriptions of each park, directions, contact information, and activities available at the park.These activities are mostly short hikes, or bike trips around the park. About par for the course for this series; easy to read, not very descriptive, with an appealing heroine.

FUN, FUN, FUN with all manner of strange creatures
This is the third book in a great series. If you haven't read the first two- BACK UP! And go get "Once Bitten, Twice Shy" and "Another One Bites the Dust." You will not be disappointed!!!

I am a HUGE fan of the paranormal genre- within which you have two major categories: the romance novels that use some kind of thriller/mystery as a subplot and then the thrillers that have romance as a subplot. I have to say that Ms. Rardin has been VERY successful in writing a series that focuses on the characters and the fun universe she has created and made any potential romance much more of a thread- enticing, tantalizing, exciting, but much like real life, not the focus.

This installment broadens the universe and takes us abroad. We get to spend more time on Jaz' brother, David. We see more of Jaz' innate ability to read others- their motivations, their weaknesses, their characters. And we see Vayl, the indomitable, sexy, enigmatic pillar of control, finally show weakness.

All in all, a great read- and a great continuation of a fun series. Enjoy!

Never thought I would like it so much
But I sure did. I read all of the series but book 4 I am working on it now and it's not as good as the others I think so far. But I am reviewing this book. :) This one was a great read. It was one of my favorites. It's got suspense, action, a little love and some hell involved. Awesome if you like the super natural or action.

Not as good as the first two in the series...
Although this book was okay overall, it wasn't as good as the first two in the series. The pacing slowed down too much at several points in the story due to the introduction of backstory. In previous books, the backstory was woven in at better spots. In this book, it interrupted the action and the flow of the story. I kept wanting to skim to get back to the story. There also seemed to be too many contradictions in the characters, especially Vayl. I don't want to post spoilers, but Vayl was too angsty and more of an "underling" compared to previous books. I just didn't recognize him. I did read the book in one day, which usually means a book is so good I couldn't stand to put it down. This time, however, I kept reading to get past the slower parts, hoping to find the action/tension I encountered in previous books. I did find it from time to time, so I'm giving this a 3.5, rounded up to 4. Not sure if I'll continue the series. Might give it another shot when the Kindle price comes down.

Uncommon Creatures
Finally, Jaz Parks goes where those in the CIA usually go: overseas. From Florida and Texas respectively in the first and second novels, the spotlight is now on Iran...as well as hell.

Jaz's twin Dave is part of a CIA special ops squad, whose big target is the Wizard, whereas Jaz's team's enemy is the Raptor. Here's where I don't quite follow - why the two squads come together, and how the Wizard and the Raptor are linked. The Raptor is part of the series arc, but the Wizard may only be in this episode.

Continuing the theme of screwed-up families, Jaz and Dave haven't talked for years before they're forced into this situation. Neither of them completely trusts the other, whilst back home patriarch Albert is having another crisis. Meanwhile, we finally meet Jaz and Dave's mother, who's in hell.

Romantic complications arise when former private investigator Cole makes clear his intentions for Jaz, but she's still mooning over their boss, Vayl. I'm usually first to stick my hand up for a hot foreigner (Vayl's Romanian), but I'm just not connecting with him. Brooding Vamp with a Troubled Past is a common archetype in fiction, thus making it difficult for one to stand out from the crowd. However, I do fancy Jaz's Spanish spirit guide, Raoul, though I have the feeling Jaz and Vayl will shag before the series is over.

Jaz's out-of-body experiences are often confusing, and though I don't quite follow them I have much respect for the author featuring some creatures not usually found in current novels. ... Read more

Superb Perspectives on Southern Utah
Fascinating and authoritative. And small enough that you can lug it around in a pack or keep it in the glove compartment.

Lots of illustrations, informative and beautiful pictures. Lots of coverage: Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon, Escalante, and (of course) Zion National Park. My favorite aspect of this book is that you can use it on the road because it has mile-by-mile descriptions.

Does a fair job on the basics, but too much east-coast liberal attitude. The bad cattle, bad dams, people building houses.

Being a Geology major learning under Professor Fillmore, his book helped me many times in my research.Not only does he do a great job describing the geology of southern Utah, but his enthusiasm for the area shines through in his writing.Fillmore also has a knack describing very technical processes in ways which anyone can understand.

The first chapter in his book consists of basic principles of geology.This covers most of the forces behind the deposition of the various formations in Utah.Theseinclude the geologic rock cycle, basic igneous and sedimentary classifications,rock deformation, monoclines/anticlines/synclines, and the geologic time scale.

The second part consists of a chronological description of the geology of southern Utah, starting from the Pennsylvanian (about 12,500 million years ago)and running all the way to the Quaternary (present).This is the part which comes in really useful for research, because not only does Fillmore write in very easy to understand language, but he also cites all of his sources, mostly from scientific papers, in an easy to look up GSA format.

The third part comes in handy for the tourist and fossil hounds out there!Once you are familiar with the geology of Southern Utah, Fillmore takes you through a mile-by-mile tour, pointing out various rock outcrops and explaining what caused them to form.This is a wealth of knowledge which can make any drive through southern utah an educational experience for the whole family.

This book is a must have for anyone wanting to know about the geology of southern Utah.The material within is very well researched by a college professor of geology, who has a love for the area he is writing about.

fillmore spends the first 2/3's of the book discussing, via geologic time periods, the formations laid down in so. utah, and the conditions which created the formations - it is wonderfully written for the layperson to the non-professional but very interested geologist - the final third is dedicated to describing roadside geology starting from east of capital reef and traveling to just west of zion - overall an excellent book and definitely worth the read for anyone interested in understanding more about the beautiful areas that are so. utah

Great look at the history of park rangers
This book is full of wonderful photos that tell the history of national park rangers, as well as some interesting text. If you're a ranger, related to one, or simply a fan of parks, you'll enjoy this book. It's an easy read and will probably make you wish you had one of these great jobs.

Rangers must have and constantly upgrade diverse knowledge, skills and abilities, and be able to diplomatically use those skills alone in the wild or in crowded urban settings. Rangers carry out technical search and rescue in every ecosystem - from 594 meters below the surface of Crater Lake to the top of Denali in Alaska at 6,194 meters, and under water in the Florida Everglades and Hawaii - while working efficiently using appropriate skills and equipment in team efforts. Commissioned rangers are federal law enforcement officers who effectively work with felons, traffic infractions and other local, state and federal agencies. Other ranges are interpreters who share the human and natural history of an area with visitors. Resource management, for the parks and people, permeates everything and every day. A ranger may repair a plumbing problem in the morning, help a visitor identify a plant, animal or rock before noon, carry out a custodial arrest or technical search and rescue in early afternoon, while working creatively within budget and administrative limitations.

The "way of life" of being a ranger is hard on rangers, spouses and children. Living conditions are often sparse and distant and people must be very tolerant, proactive for food, education and routine maintenance and be able to think and act long-term. Advancement comes competitively, often requiring major long-distance moves and extreme changes in climate - from cold interior Alaska, to warm Death Valley, to warm and humid Guam or Florida, to the snowy Great Lakes.

Rangers are female and male, come in every type of skin pigmentation, are physically abled and disabled, speak a wide variety of languages and come from many cultures. National Park Service rangers are consistently the most admired people and the most admired agency. Too many legislators use the NPS for political expediency and short-term gain. This is a good read and underscores the strong need for much better funding and support of rangers and the National Park Service.

Great for guitar players
This book is laid out like just about any other guitar tablature book out there, with the authentic sheet music for all the songs on Hybrid Theory, and includes the 2nd guitar where appropriate.

Unfortunately, what ISN'T in it is the rest of the instruments, nor do those tabs/sheet music appear to be available from any official sources. I'd be much more impressed if WB would release a similar book for each instrument, if not one complete band score.

Not just lyrics.
Ok, this book may seem to just be the lyrics, but only to people who are better at critiquing music than they are reading it.This not only contains sheet music to the songs on Hybrid Theory, but it is a guitar tablature book.If you've played guitar more than a couple weeks, you know how to read this, and it will teach you how to CORRECTLY play all the songs on the album. It also gives the correct guitar timing and the timing and notes for the lyrics. It's not the same as the booklet that comes with the album, by a longshot.This book isn't necessarily for Linkin Park fans altogether, but for LP fans who are musicians as well.If you're a guitarist who likes the album and are interested in playing it, it is worth it.It's not rocket science.

Completely useless.
Let me ask you a completely logical question: Why would you want to buy this book (which only features the lyrics to songs off of Linkin Park's "Hybrid Theory" album), when you can read these lyrics anywhere on the internet for free? Not only that, but the booklet that comes with the "Hybrid Theory" album contains the lyrics to each song anyway, so there really is absolutely no point in getting this book.

David Park Comes Alive
David Park the man, and David Park the painter both come alive in his daughter's intimate memoir. For those who admire Park's paintings, reading this book will answer many questions about his background and his character. As author Helen Park Bigelow candidly points out, there are some mysteries that remain, but the book is the most complete portrait of Park that will ever be published. It is also the story of a marriage and of the family life of a man just selfish enough to be a painter, and of his devoted wife who overcame her own problems to care for him at the end of his life. Keep in mind, this isn't a book that has a critical tone, but rather a daughter's effort to tell us what she can about a father she always called "David." The chapter describing Park's final show in New York and his death of bone cancer is especially moving and compelling. Park was an American original whose work brought a hint of the anxiety of European expressionism into the American figurative tradition. As Henry Geldzahler once stated, he moved the tradition of the figure in painting forward. David and his works are worth knowing, and this book is a fitting tribute that recalls Park with affection, respect and candor. The book also reproduces many of his works, including a moving selection of the works on paper he completed just prior to his death.

Excellent Intimate View of David Park
Written by the daughter of David Park, he being considered by many (including myself) as the best of the Bay Area Figurative Artists of the 1950's and 1960's (Richard Diebenkorn, Nathan Oliveira, Manuel Neri, Elmer Bischoff, etc.), this biography offers a splendid 'behind the scenes' look at a great painter, a master of color, and is lavishly illustrated with his works.Its only sin, totally excusable, is an occasional bit of over-sentimentality, but then again, it's the voice of an admiring daughter.Five stars, five stars, and more of same.

Excellent
I really enjoyed this book, as Rosa Parks herself was involved in its writing. I'm from the French West Indian island of Guadeloupe, so I wasn't taught the history of Mrs. Parks as a youngster, and my knowledge of the history of African Americans derived mostly from reading books about the subject. I found this book really easy to read plus it allowed me to gain accurate and deep understanding of what African Americans had to go through in Montgomery at the time, the difficulties Mrs. Parks had to face and the risks she was willing to take to fight against segregation. One thing I really appreciated is that she doesn't try to oppose Black Americans to White Americans, she bore no grudge against white America despite all she had to go through. That really made her special to me. It's up to mankind to put an end to war, suffering, abuse, discrimination... against mankind.

Conversational History
I am not even remotely a history buff, but I started trying to learn more about African American history after seeing it being ignored in high school and my first college. Books like these make it far more interesting for me to want to learn more about our legendary American icons. Most people know the basics of Rosa Parks, but this book clears up some issues that photo captions or books written by others may not (ex. the real reason and day that Rosa Parks took the fingerprinting picture, her mood about taking photos on the bus after the boycott was over, how she feels about her health being documented, a prisoner she helped after the woman threatened her husband, how Mrs. Parks feels about nonviolence and Malcolm X). I can read any dry history book to find out an overview of Mrs. Parks, but this book felt like I was sitting cross-legged in front of her, and she was conversing about her life. I enjoyed it.

Rosa Parks Wasn't Just Tired
Rosa Parks: My Story immediately invokes a sense of warmth and intimacy.The autobiography is written in such a way that one can imagine a small, unassuming, elderly lady describing memorable moments of her life, as if she were speaking to a grandchild or friend.This style easily invokes vivid imagery of the events, providing intimate glimpses into the life of one of the most influential leaders in the Civil Rights movement. Through this personalized tone and realistic imagery Rosa Parks tells a history of hatred and compassion, of fear and strength, but most of all of her own commitment to non-violent change in a balanced and fair way.

My Story is a collection of personal stories, which serve to demonstrate the extreme racism and as well as the incredible commitment and compassion the Civil Rights icon encounters throughout her life. Rosa relates the violent reaction of the KKK to the black soldiers homecoming after WWI, saying, "At one point the violence was so bad that my grandfather kept his gun... close by at all times... just in case the Klansmen broke into our house" (30).While the entire book could be filled with horrific stories of the blatant racism and violent actions of white Southerners, Rosa chooses to also relate the counterexamples. Her extraordinary experiences include, not only stories of extraordinary wrongs but extraordinary courage to do what is right, as well.

One poignant story is that of Miss White, the white woman from Massachusetts who chose to "educate black girls [despite] being ostracized by the white community in Montgomery" (42-43).The numerous stories juxtaposed against one another serve not only to demonstrate the extremes but they also show Rosa's extremely aware yet fair view of the world throughout her childhood and adolescence.While the book is written in a simplistic manner, this only serves to draw the reader closer into a more intimate contact with Parks herself.

While white people's attitudes were shown to vary widely and extremely, Rosa depicts blacks in the South in the same light.She acknowledges the understandably fearful acquiescence of the majority of the black community brought on by years of intimidation and threats of violence to those who would deviate from the status quo. She mentions her grandmother's chastising words when Rosa stood up to some white children to protect her brother. Parks tells of how hurt she felt by the fact that her grandmother thought she should simply accept the unjust behavior without a defending her or her brother's integrity. However, she also realizes later that the harsh words of her grandmother were brought on by love of her grandchildren and fear of the very tangible threat of violence and harm that any sort of pride in the black community would surely entice (22-23).Although this attitude of fear was common, it was by no means predestined.Strong black men and women made an impact on Rosa as a child. Her grandfather and neighbor both had a strong sense of pride and dignity that no white person could intimidate out of them. Rosa herself recounts her own "very strong sense of what was fair" (22).Her internal sense of justice is apparent throughout her story; not only because of her direct assertion of these feelings, but also through her view of the world and her personality, which is seen in the content of the book.

Rosa Park's values of justice, fairness, her balanced view of the world and internal strength all attributed to the most notable moment in her life:refusing to give up her bus seat and, in doing so, launching the non-violent civil rights movement in the United States. Her willingness and commitment to the cause is evident. More importantly, though, this autobiography also demonstrates very clearly that she, too, had doubts and was only human.She expresses her own doubt that non-violence could truly accomplish all that she now knows it did in the Civil Rights movement, attributing her own steadfast commitment to non-violence to Martin Luther King Jr.This seems to be too humble a self-assessment, but it is not hard for one to understand from her writing that she was just like any other person, with her own unique life experiences and conviction which she applied and committed to a cause.Rosa Parks says it best:I couldn't do everything I wanted to, but I did what I could (181). Perhaps the most important message of this biography is that of strength and commitment of character despite the uncertainty and fear inherent to the fight against oppression and injustice.

Upon finishing the biography, one is left wanting--not for lack of story or inadequate biases, but rather because this incredible woman so eloquently and intimately shares her life and in doing so bestows her own tacit understanding of the world upon the reader.It is obvious Rosa Parks is just one woman who is not without doubt or fear; this simple fact makes her story even more of an inspiration. Hence, the reader feels as though she needs to learn more, to hear more of her experiences, and to understand more about her quite source of strength. It is apparent upon finishing her autobiography that Rosa Parks writes My Story in a simple, unpretentious way that reflects her own strong sense of fairness and justice.

This book recognizes a lot of the Civil Rights Movement being that she was a part of the mistreatment of African-Americans.As said in the first paragraph she didn't give up her bus seat because she was tired of giving in to white people intimidating her and other African-Americans.That and other arrestments started the Montgomery bus boycott.

She recognizes the fact a lot that everyone's the same and shouldn't be treated any differently than others.She also says that Dr. Martin Luther King, jr. made a point about not fighting back with violence.When Rosa was young she didn't know what nonviolence really was.All her and her brother knew were to say if someone did something to them they would go right back and do something to them.After Dr. King's speeches' she realized that he believed strongly in nonviolence and listened to Mohandas Gandhi on liberating India from Great Britain.

Rosa has been a national icon when you think of the Civil Rights Movement.Her nickname is the Mother of Civil Rights just for her accomplishments.It wasn't because she didn't give up her seat.It was because she is a strong woman and cares about her friends and family.Rosa Parks died a great person.Even if she got arrested she is still a great person.

An autobiography that should be required reading in American schools
If there is a single autobiography that should be read by all American children as they go through school, it is this one. Rosa Parks was the person who lit the spark that ignited the civil rights movement in the United States that led to so much positive change. Tired after a long day at work, she was riding the bus home. According to law, if a white person wanted her seat, she was forced to give it up. A white man wanted to sit, but she refused to yield. The white driver then ordered her to relinquish the seat and when she again refused, the police were called, which led to her arrest. This action sparked the famous Montgomery bus boycott, which led to a change in the law. Once the civil rights movement started, it could not be stopped, despite ferocious and violent opposition by southern whites.
This story is one of an otherwise unassuming but proud woman who possessed great courage. Her life is one of hardship, trials and eventually great triumph. Young children of today do not understand what life was like in the segregated, racist society of the first half of the twentieth century. This book will help them understand the debt we all owe to the people who sparked, nurtured and led the civil rights movement to the success that it was. It is a very moving and inspiring book.
