Excellent resource book for species of birds
Rosemary Low, a premier British aviculturist, has written an excellent guide for breeders and bird fanciers about the species and subspecies of many types of psitticines with color photographs and descriptions to help identify them. There is information on their locale of origin and population in the wild. I believe her information on breeding histories of these birds is interesting and helpful for potential breeders of any of these birds.I do however, feel that her information on nutrition and feeding is dated. There has been so much discovered in more recent years on the nutritional requirements of birds, certain species in particular, that one should refer to more current reference materials for that information. ... excellent research
This book was the most informative book I've read on the parrot population, pet stores, smuggling, etc.It also gave a grasp of the magnificence of the parrot intelligence.

Bittersweet, feathered insights
This is quite an eye-opening account of virtually every aspect of the relationships between these intelligent birds and the humans that can befriend or bedevil them. The later chapters about Charles Munn's efforts to preserve natural habitats in South America are inspiring, while the ones dealing with the bird trade are depressing and infuriating. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys hanging out around and observing talking, squawking feathered creatures.

A worthwhile book for people who live with parrots
I found this book interesting and also very helpful in understanding the parrit I live with.

An excellent book for parrot lovers
As a parrot owner/rescuer/lover, I would recommend this book to any parrot fancier.I would also recommend it to new parrot owners so they can see they are not alone.

Polemical. Some Good Points and Insights along with Some Distortions.
Some people might consider Mira Tweti a fanatic, because she doesn't believe in any captive breeding of parrots for the pet trade or that captive parrots should ever have their wings clipped. I might be one of those people. Tweti's intention is to present us with the current relationship between humans and parrots, both captive and wild, so that we see how dysfunctional and destructive that relationship is at times. "Of Parrots and People" largely succeeds in that goal by looking at the current state of parrots in the pet trade and in their natural habitat. Conditions are not what they should be for parrots and many populations seemed doomed to extinction.

Tweti begins by introducing the reader to the amazing cognitive, linguistic, and emotional capacity of parrots. The book's twelve chapters explore issues like: the crisis of unwanted birds and overburdened rescue facilities, feral flocks of non-native parrots in the United States, the plight of breeder birds on typical breeding farms, bird rescue organizations, parrot poaching and the illegal parrot trade, a US Fish & Wildlife Service Special Enforcement Agent's fight against parrot smuggling, and a trip to Brazil to see parrots in the wild with conservationist Charles Munn. She progresses from discussion of captive companion and breeding birds to the threats to wild parrot populations.

"Of Parrots and People" is not exhaustive on each topic, nor is it always objective, but it presents major parrot issues in a generally engaging style. I felt that Tweti could have done more to impress her readership with parrots' intelligence, to explain why they have such great needs in captivity and would be an extraordinary loss if they were extinct in the wild. People should be thinking of these birds as dolphin or elephants, as smarter than chimpanzees, by the time they finish the book, and I don't think they are. I was annoyed repeatedly by omissions and misstatements of facts to distort some issues. This is a polemic.But "Of Parrots and People" does illuminate the problems and provide insight into aspects of the parrot trade that even parrot lovers may not know about. ... Read more

"Well," said Fido to himself, "I have no doubt but she will love me in time; all the more, as I have great hopes of growing bigger before the spring."

my least favorite of Lester's books
While I am generally a huge fan of HL/LM books, this one I found a little too abrasive/foul for a young audience (my kids are 5and 2).I would not recommend this one for young kids, but would steer you instead to other HL/LM books that we absolutely loved (and I would rate 5 stars):

Helen Lester Strikes Again!
As a kindergarten teacher, I am always looking for books that teach as well as entertain.Helen Lester delivers just this in her story about avery spoiled princess named Penelope and her parrot that she receives as abirthday present.Penelope does not speak nicely to the bird, and isangered when the bird will not speak to her.Penelope later learns howimportant it is to use "nice words" when speaking to othersbecause her words come back(as the voice of the parrot) to haunt her infront of a prince she wishes to impress.

The story is cleverly writtenin a language that the children identify with and the pictures match thestory completely and are as equally amusing. My class loves this book andbegs to hear it over and over.This is one of Helen Lester's best books,and is definitely a must have!If a five year old want to read it, it hasto be wonderful! ... Allowing parrots to fly free outdoors is stupid and foolish.
This book had potential as a good book for children -- Until the child whoowned the parrot, at the advice of his veterinarian, allowed the parrot tofly outside without restraint.This allowed the parrot many adventures,but at great risk to the parrot.I bought this book to give to my locallibrary so children would have the opportunity to get to know about thejoys of having parrots as pets, not to be fed misinformation.Knowing thata veterinarian would never ever give this extremely poor advice because ofthe danger it would pose to the parrot, I am very concerned that childrenwould, if they had access to a pet bird, think it ok to free it. ...
