4-0 out of 5 stars "Brother Bear" meets "Captain Planet"
Naysayers may decry WHAT THE PARROT TOLD ALICE as propaganda for young minds, you can't go wrong when you've got Dr. Seuss as a trailblazer for kids' eco-fiction. The beginning reminds one of "Brother Bear". A young man is transformed into a parrot to atone for a crime against nature. The young man-turned-parrot ends up, Lorax-style, in the home of Alice Smith, a preteen who, although bright, has no idea of the environmental devastation her species, namely humans, wreaks upon tropical birds and rainforests. While the book and its sequel present grim and what this reviewer thinks of as exaggerated portraits of man's inhumanity to the whole universe, the book also provides an imaginative gateway to thinking about the future of life on this planet as we know it...and as we want it to be...straight from the parrot's mouth, right to our hearts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
It all began in the year 1966, in the Solomon Islands. Manao was 12 years old and had cut down the biggest tree in the forest. This was a huge sin. As punishment, the tribe's magician pronounced that Manao's spirit would inhabit the body of a parrot. During his life as a parrot, he would have a few magical abilities and he would have a special gift that must be used wisely. He would be able to speak his thoughts to ONE human being. Manao would deliver a message about the importance of balance and harmony among life.

Thirty years later...

Bo Parrot "Bobo" chose to speak with Alice, the young girl in the family that kept him as a pet. Bobo could make himself into other types of birds for Alice to talk to and learn from. Bobo told Alice the cruel way in which he came to be with her family. Then he turned into a Goffin's cockatoo, a Spix's macaw, a gray parrot, and several other types of birds. Each bird told Alice where they were from originally and how humans' greed ruined their lives.

***** This book is a perfect way for teens and pre-teens to become aware of species that are in danger of extinction and how to help make sure such atrocities never happen again. In fact, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of each book goes toward acquisition of wildlife habitat. So it not only teaches those who read it, but just by purchasing it the reader helps the environment!

The author did a wonderful job of creating Alice, which many kids will be able to relate to. Each bird is like a short story and each story is intertwined with a larger tale. Excellent! *****

5-0 out of 5 stars Sally Blanchard is a THIEF and CON ARTIST!
This is a Great Book. The finest ever published on Parrot Behavior.
However, the Author and her company CPQ are Con Artists and Thieves.

They sold hundreds of subscriptions to their expensive magazine "Companion Parrot Quarterly."
Most of the subcribers, including myself, recieved one or NO issues. In two years, not one issue was ever published and recieved. CPQ never answered any inquiries and the subscribers never got a single penny back.
AND Blanchard kept selling subscriptions and pocketing money!

This is a scandal and I understand that complaints have been filed with the Colorado Attorney General.
If you don't believe me, check the internet.Anyway, only buy this Book from Amazon.NEVER Send any money to Blanchard or CPQ...you will recieve nothing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book ever!
This is probably the best book I have ever read based on living with a companion parrot! It covers every topic I can think of and is very easy to read. Too many people buy birds without knowing what they are getting themselves into which leads to a neglected and miserable bird. This book teaches you everything you need to know to have a happy, lifelong companion parrot. It should be illegal for anyone to buy a parrot without reading this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Handfeeding Bible
If you handfeed birds or plan to this is a must have book. It's a great reference not only for general information on how to feed, but also the problems that can occur while doing so.It also details proper handling and sanitation procedures to keep disease from spreading within a flock.Small breeders may not be able to emulate all the procedures outlined in the book.Regardless, it is an excellent source of information on how an ideal facility should operate (something any size aviary should know).

For breeders who incubate their own eggs I suggest Parrot Incubation Procedures by Rick Jordan as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference book for any experience level
This is a must have book for anyone new to breeding, and a great reference book for experienced breeders. Here are the chapter headings:

1:Managing the Nursery
2:Maintenance of Nestlings (Brooding)
3:Formulas
4:Feeding Instruments and Methods
5:Feeding
6:Weight Monitoring
7:Non-Dietary Factors That Control Weight Gain
8:Potential Health Problems in the Nursery
9:Non-Pathogenic Death
10: Medical Procedures for the Aviculturist
11: Weaning

Each chapter is packed with critical information and well documented with excellent photographs from experienced aviculturists Voren and Jordan.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book!
I just wanted to correct one review here, the one that just gave one star... This is a book for bird lovers in the scientific sense, eg naturalists or orinthologists. This isn't a book about bird breeding and selling... This book is a fauna book, our a sort of Psittacum specium... The book provides a brief overview of the natural histoty of these wonderfull birds (evolution classification etc), plus incredible illustrations and wonderfull detailed descriptions plus distribution maps. I am a botanist, but I have a passion for parrots. this book will allow to feed that passion. Next time I head to the south american jungles, I will keep my eyes open and hopefully be able to name a few parrots I see from far.
So, in my view this book deserves straight five stars!

5-0 out of 5 stars Unbeatable Reference on WILD Parrots
I was long wondering whether to buy this book or not, but it was well worth getting.
The species accounts are incredibly detailed and it must have been hard work to collect all that data.
I have field experience regarding parrots in Eastern Indonesia, and found this book to be amazingly up to date about the status of species occuring there - so I trust it is similarly accurate about parrots in the rest of the world, too!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good guide
I own parrots, I have friends who own parrots, and I have a brother who breeds parrots.I feel I can knowledgably say that this is not a good guide to parrots. It is full of mistakes both in the text and in the illustrations.I was very disappointed when I went through this book and, fortunately, I did not buy it but got it through the library. If you want info about this group of birds buy the standard, Forshaw's Parrots of the World, and just realize that the information about ranges and scientific names might be out-of-date but overall this is the better book by far.It deserves no stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Terrific Guide to Parrots!
This is got to be one of the best guide books I have ever seen featuring over 350 different species of parrots on our planet.Being the bird lover that I am, and that includes domestic as well as wild birds,I own almost every book out there on birds, and I really love this edition by Tony Juniper & Mike Parr.It should really be called an encyclopedia because there is just so much information in these almost 600 pages. The 88 superb color illustrations of all the species by 5 different artists are so beautiful & true to life.As you already know by reading the editorial & other reviews, this book includes range maps of the species locations, their vocalizations, life expectancies, and much more fascinating information.

Remember, this is not a book about parrots in captivity, its information about birds in the wild.If you don't own a parrot and are thinking about one, this book is a definite help in learning about all the different species that are out there. The more knowledge you have the better it will be when you do decide to pick out that perfect companion parrot for yourself & family.Owning a companion parrot is a lifetime commitment that shouldn't be taken lightly.I know I researched many months before I found the perfect parrot for us.The love you receive in return from your parrot will amaze you.I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars.Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Encyclopedia for Parrots
This is the first book I bought on Parrots and it is the only I would ever need to learn about the different types of Parrots in the world. It contains information and pictures on every type of Parrot from the AfricanGrey to the rare Kakapo. I only wish they had an indication on the pricerange of each bird on the market for those who breed and sell. I woulddefinitely recommend this book to the serious Parrot collector. A definitemust on a Parrot lover's bookshelf and worth every dollar. ... Read more

Product Description
Psittacines are maintained in captivity as pets, in the home, as breeding birds in avicultures, in zoos and in conservation projects. Because of their intelligence, playfulness and ability in mimicry, psittacines are the most widely kept companion birds. In the wild, these birds are normally social, living with others. In captivity most are kept in a cage without other birds. The advantage of caging psittacines is that they are more likely to become tame and develop their powers of mimicry. The disadvantage, however, is that in this environment, psittacines develop behavior problems that can take many forms, including biting, screeching and self-mutilation. It is estimated that more than half of the cases presented to clinicians in companion psittacine practice are the result of behavioral problems - problems inherent to the caged psittacine.Bringing together a host of international experts on avian behavior, Andrew Leuscher explores the many facets of psittacine behavior, both normal and abnormal, and offers useful techniques of diagnosis and treatment for clinicians who see birds in practice. Species covered include Macaws, Amazon Parrots, African Grey Parrots, Cockatiels, Budgerigars and Cockatoos. This authoritative reference, the first of its kind, is a necessary addition to the library of any practitioner who sees avian companion animals.

5-0 out of 5 stars Parrot Behavior Manual
Best book on parrot behavior I have read. As parrot owners, we are constantly being challenged by our pets. This book reinforces your experiences with logical and well thought-out explanations as to why parrots react and behave the way they do. Would highly recommend to anyone who owns (or is thinking of acquiring) a parrot, since they require far more attention than more conventional pets (such as dogs and cats).

5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource for the new parrot owner!
This book is a great resource tool for me to look up specific questions I have about my pet parrots!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Help In Choosing aBird
Although "complete" is anoverstatement, "The Complete Parrot" providesinformation on the personalities, abilities, care, and history of about 85 species of parrot, not including subspecies. It is also generously illustrated with color photographs of most of these birds. There are short chapters on Getting Started, Longevity, Training, Nutrition, Grooming, Avian Medicine, and Breeding. But these chapters are overviews of these subjects more than comprehensive how-to guides. The bulk of the book is dedicated to describing the birds. There are chapters on: African Greys, Amazons, Australasian Parrots, Cockatoos, Conures(only the most common species of conure are covered), Eclectus, Lories, Lovebirds, Macaws, and some additional Smaller and Unusual Parrots. The book seems to be intended as more of an exploration of the characteristics and delights of parrots than as a how-to reference. This probably explains why the sections on each species are not organized into breeding, housing, diet, history, etc. subsections. These topics run together. This does make it difficult to relocate something you have read, but it gives the book a more prosaic and narrative style, which I believe was the author's intention. I think any bird lover will find the information in "The Complete Parrot" interesting, but it would be most helpful to those who are trying to decide which species of bird to buy, or if bird ownership is the thing for them at all. The author gives more details about the personalities and abilities of more species of birds, in themselves and compared to each other, than I have ever seen in one place. He also relates his personal experiences with birds, as well as those of other bird owners. And he frequently gives some interesting history of the species. This information, along with the nice color photographs, will really help you chose a bird that is right for you. If you are considering a conure, you'll need a book dedicated to conures for more detailed information on the many species available.

Recommended for anyone who likes interesting bird stories and lovely bird pictures, but especially to those who are wondering which species of bird they should get.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun Anecdotal Articles
Besides being a beautiful book, the author shares his experiences with the parrots who have touched his life.

There are profiles of many species, fantastic photos, and my favorite section: Parrot Potpourri which is full of interesting parrot-related tid-bits.

I recommend adding this book to your avian library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Photos, Stories, and Information From a Trusted Source
The Complete Parrot is a wonderful book in every way. This book provides colorful pictures useful in deciphering any parrot of your choice, comical anecdotes that contain miscellaneous bits of useful information, and is easily read by any newcomer of the parrot fancy. Being a well-rounded piece of literature, the book may by itself give any person a significant understanding of the psittacine birds.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wide ranging and topical
Very readable and entertaining.Clearly the work of a bird-lover.Some readers have criticized the book for the very characteristics that make it a joy to own. This book is not a "how to" or a guide to basicparrot care, of which there are several on the market. It is, rather, ageneral discussion of parrots, with more information on the parrots thatare better known to the author. The photographs are wonderful, and some ofthe stories are quite amusing. The author began as a parrot owner during atime when not much was known about these wonderful companion birds. He ishonest about his experiences, and these can help people who are new toparrot ownership now. There are not a great many books available to theparrot owner, and if one wishes to be reasonably well informed, it isadvisable to read most of the available field. In doing so, this will beone of the most delightful experiences. ... Product Description
"When I'm really old and can't use myself anymore, this is what I'll be doing."-Cindy Sherman

"Not only was I enthralled with Mrs. Ballard's Parrots, I was slightly jealous that these creatures had a better sense of style than me." -Isaac Mizrahi

In the late 1960s, Long Island housewife Alba Ballard decided to sew a little outfit for one of her many pet parrots. Soon she began staging elaborate productions, casting her lavishly costumed birds in scenes from popular movies, TV shows, and historical events-all preserved in photographs by Alba and her husband. One minute, parrots were tiny, winged incarnations of such luminaries as Sonny and Cher and General George Patton; another, yellow and green macaws in leather jackets rode on miniature motorcycles reenacting scenes from Easy Rider. Word of Alba's quirky creations spread, and with her feathered cast she eventually appeared on Late Night with David Letterman, Saturday Night Live, and even in Woody Allen's film Broadway Danny Rose.

In 1992 a small collection of her photographs turned up in the Swiss home of Elizabeth Taylor, and they soon reached the hands of Arne Svenson. Although Alba died in 1994, her fantasy world lives on in these pictures-a bizarre yet endearing mix of artistry, kitsch, and humor-which form the heart of this irresistible book.AUTHOR BIO: Arne Svenson is a New York-based photographer whose work has been shown extensively in the United States and Europe. He is the author of Prisoners and Sock Monkeys. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, Funny, and a Little Frightening
A book filled with parrots dressed up in costumes and photographed in appropriate settings.I would have loved to be in the room when this was proposed to the publisher.

The result is page after page of hilariously enchanting, fun, and meticulously created scenes. So meticulous that once you stop laughing, you kind of HAVE to sit back and wonder about the person who clearly dedicated many months of long, long days to get these just right. It's very existance is a reason to smile through your day.

If you have any sense of humor at all, get this book today. You will never regret it.
