Not detailed enough for shelf exam
I just took the shelf exam, and felt under prepared after having relied heavily on case files.If I was going to do it again, I would have used Blueprints or First Aid.

Not up to par with others in the series
Although this is a great book, it really isn't as good as other books in the series.I stilled enjoyed using this book for the same reason that I loved using the other case files series: fast read, clinically relevant, good for shelf exam.However, this book seemed to have some strange questions at the end of each chapter.While some of the questions were excellent, others were not well thought out and tested on some very strange things that would never show up on any shelf examination.Aside from that, the clinical cases presented are very relevant to what you will see in the clinic and on exams.Good choice for a quick read through one week before an exam.

Definitely worth the money!
The Lange case files books are great, the pediatric one included.Putting this information into a case really helps make it memorable and manageable.

Good for clinic
This book explains diseases very clearly and is easy to read.It's good to read during your Pediatric rotation to give you a basic understanding of the most common diseases.However, the Shelf tests are notoriously hard, so don't make Case Files your sole study tool.

Easy to Read
I used this book as the sole source for my shelf study, and got a 77 on the shelf exam - not great, but definitely passing.It's a fairly absorbing book, can be read in a few sittings without a big problem.Obviously someone truly interested in pediatrics would buy a more complete textbook, but this is nice, with vignettes, bold print for the big points, and questions to test your understanding at the end of each chapter. ... Excellent
The book is excellent. It was very informative and helped us understand our baby's growth very well.

TEACHERS VS. CHILD CARE PROVIDERS!
here is a huge misconception that continues in literature like the ones in this book... Private schools and Child Care Centers and Day Care Centers all across the country hire "Child-Care Providers" and NOT "Teachers". What is the difference? "Teachers" have college degrees and certification and usually experience in their field.

However, "Child-Care Providers" are individuals that usually do not have teaching credentials or college education, and ONLY have to obtain a minimum numbers of state mandated "training hours" to work with your child! This is not to say that these individuals are not loving, caring, and nurturing individuals...

However, society needs to stop the misconception of a job title that does not apply to the work setting in this book and others like it... If you don't believe that there is a difference, then just look at the Yale Study from 2005 where preschool children are three times more likely to be kicked-out of preschool than children in grades K-12 combined. SAD!

By far the best comprehensive resource book you can buy
I purchased many many books to educate myself on child development, nutrition, medical, etc before my first child (of four) was born. I kept coming back to this book for absolutely everything. I don't think there was one question I had that this book did not address. I give this book as a gift to every expecting mother in my and my husbands family- Better than a swing, mobile or baby monitor. Biggest bonus was all the developmental "what should my baby be doing now, at 3 months, 4 months...6 months - really took the "worry" out of a first time mom. And with the medical info in the back, I felt prepared indeed. If you do not want 10 books with bits and pieces, get this ONE -

Great book
Great book. I bought it when my twins were just 2 months. Covers a lot of issues and is very helpful. The way it is written is easy to understand, yet sounds professional. It gives you more confidence in the hard moments of raising a child. Will recommend to future or now parents. The book was recommended to me by friends and I do not regret buying it. Good luck.

This Guide Was Pediatrician Recommended!
This is a great book to take you through the week-to-week, and month-to-month of development. Our pediatrician told us to buy the book the first time we met her, before our baby was born. It is a very informative medical guide, and we have gotten a lot out of it. This is definitely a great book to read, and then have around to reference. Because it is a reference guide, it does not offer many tips or suggestions on comforting fussy babies, or learning their cries, or teaching infants to sleep without crying, like other popular books - so keep that in mind. However it does go stage by stage of your infant's development, such as how their eye sight develops, their growth spurt timing, their capacity to learn, etc. ... Read more

Great for shelves
Every topic I encountered on the shelf exam, was covered in blueprints. It explains everything thoroughly which means that you have to read slowly but when the shelf exam comes around you'll be happy you did.

What is with the Zebras in this book.
So I just finished up my pediatric rotation and used this book pretty heavily.Having used blueprints for Neuro and OB/GYN, I have a pretty good grasp on how this book compared to some of the other books in this series, and I have to say that I was a little disappointed.Don't get me wrong, it is well written and concise, but it is not necessarily geared toward passing the pediatric shelf exam, which I was using it for.It touches on a number of points that are outright ridiculous to teach to a medical student in their pediatric clerkship.If anything, the first chapter should clue you in on this.It speaks about life saving measures in an emergency department setting.Unfortunately the ED is not covered by general pediatricians and this information is not pertinent to the pediatric shelf exam.It continues by introducing a number of diseases, zebras, which are almost never seen!For example, the dermatology chapter introduces several common rashes that present in children and then the next thing you know it is talking about Gianotti-Crosti, a very rare form of post viral exanthema.It neglects to introduce some very common problems in children, while letting minute points drag on and on.Odd facts continue in tables that are over packed with so much information that it is just doesn't help you diagnose or manage x,y, and z.I mean really, I bought this book with the intent of reading it like a textbook, and it was really disappointing to see a chapter heading that referred you to a table without saying a word about it.In summary, this book is a broad overview of pediatrics.It is so broad that it fails to gear itself toward the medical students and helping them pass the shelf exam.So, if you would like a well written book on pediatrics that is concise and too the point, but you don't mind a couple zebras every now and then, this is your book.

kind of like a condensed book
This book is set up like a full-length book, but is condensed into a review format. Each section gives some general information about the body system before going into each diagnosis. It's written up in paragraph style instead of bullet-point.

Lack of Focus on Important Issues

Solid choice!
I would definitely recommend Pretest in preparation for the Peds shelf. I confess, I didn't study as much as I should have (Peds is *not* my thing) but I did shockingly well on the shelf and I attribute that mostly to Pretest in the final days before the exam...I had many questions on the shelf that were nearly identical to Pretest questions on topics I didn't really encounter much elsewhere. I also read Case Files earlier on, which I'd also recommend, but I think Pretest is the go-to book for the shelf.

Best (and cheapest) question source for peds shelf exam.
This PreTest book is probably one of the best of the series. It has many vignettes, contains good B&W pictures, tests the most high-yield stuff, and does an excellent job illuminating the differences between similar diseases. It does have some errors (from the 12th edition, p. 131, Q. 182 screws up tricuspid regurgitation (it's a systolic murmur!); p. 371 Q. 482 pulmonic stenosis is accentuated with inspiration, not expiration), but other than that is fantastic. This is the best and only question source you need to correspond with a good clerkship text like Nelson's Essentials or First Aid for Pediatrics.

Great Overview
Of the few sources I looked through, this one was the best bang for the buck.

Unlike others in the PreTest series most of these questions are either similar to the shelf or very helpful to your learning. I only wish I had discovered it sooner and gone through it twice.

It is not comprehensive - nothing short of 500 pages will be I imagine, but overall this is probably one of the best books for the test. Relatively high yield.

Good review book, but lacking in some areas
I've been using the Pre-Test series for all the rotations I have done so far (surgery and neurology), and like the other books in the series, PreTest for Pediatrics provides a good overview of which topics to know about for the shelf exam. I also personally like using the question-answer format for reviewing material because the information sticks better than from just reading a paragraph in Blueprints or First Aid. However, I've noticed that some of the answer sections at the back are lacking in a discussion of why a certain answer is better than the other, and I had to look up the information elsewhere. Also, the question format is not as similar to the USMLE questions as I'd like (they use many more buzz words in PreTest, and the question stems are not as long as the ones on shelf exams). They also have a few questions on very low-yield material.

In summary, this book is very useful when used in conjunction with a more in-depth, text-book type book and is nice to carry around with you on wards to study when you have a short period of free time, but not great if you are trying to thoroughly learn the material.

Good review, but not enough for NBME shelf
This was an excellent quick review of basic peds, however it lacked the depth of knowledge needed to crush the NBME shelf exam.The questions in PreTest are straight forward and several of them were nearly reproduced for the shelf exam.However, the shelf also had more intricate questions for which a deeper review would have been helpful.In summary: PreTest is a great foundation, but expect to do additional reading for the shelf. ... Decent resource
I am a Med/Peds resident who was looking for a good companion to my Pocket Medicine: The Massachusetts General Hospital Handbook of Internal Medicine (Pocket Notebook Series) (Ring-bound). My Pocket Medicine is very well used and an excellent resource. I have had Pocket Pediatrics in my coat for the last two months and have referred to it a couple of times. As with Pocket Medicine, there are many subjects not covered or not covered in great detail, but a comprehensive resource is not what this book is meant to be. So far, it's usefulness on the wards has been adequate and I hope to update this review when I have had more time with it.

Pocket Pediatrics
This is a terrific book to carry with you for quick info about the most important pediatric data.It is succinct & very helpful.

The best pocket-sized resource
Much like the pocket medicine book we all love, this book contains all of the high-yield, easily-readable information you need to know to take care of your patients as a House Officer.While I have piles of medical books collecting dust, this is one of the four books I ACTUALLY use and one of the two books I keep in my pocket.It's weak in neonatology, but it makes up for it in PICU material.If it only had a few pages dedicated to medication dosing, I'd be leaving my Harriet at home.If I had to pick one book to carry with me, this would be it.

Ripped out pages
The book was missing half of it's pages. This is a study guide book, and 75% of the answers to the study guide were cut out of the book. Therefore the book is completely useless. As for the book itself, there a serious lack of multiple choice questions. There were 0-1 question per chapter.

To me in a timely manner
Time was of the essence to get the book before school started and I did. It saved me $138 over the bundle it was attached to at the campus store.

Thourough, yet managable!
This book is an incredibly awesome asset to third year medical students.It goes from the ground up and really gives the high yield details needed to do well on exams.This is one of the best books in the first aid series because it explains things so much better than the other books in the series.It also has a lot of intangables to really shine on your rotation.For example, a basic review on echocardigrams is included in the cardio chapter,PALS is reviewed at the end of the book, and practical points on routine health and supervision are included.It coveres just about every topic that you'll encounter on pediatrics and is managable to get through.Don't let the 500 pages intimidate you.The first aid format is notorious for an outline form, diagrams, and pictures.It's really not that hard to get through.The high yield notes in the margins are A+.They aren't stupid/often useless details that Step up to Medicine often adds (great book but often bad margin notes).They are almost all good tid-bits to answer questions.Grab this book and tear up your miniboard and Step 2.

Good reference, but can't go through clerkship with this alone
The book was a good reference, but its bulky size makes it impractical for carrying around the hospital.I used it mainly to quickly look something up when reading from Blueprints at home.If you get the time to review it before the shelf, like they recommend, I'm sure it would be more useful.Practically, that is unlikely to happen.

Must have for any pediatric office
This is a wonderful resource for pediatric drugs...it has way more than the Harriet Lane. The newest edition has even more information, including pregnancy and lactation information related to specific drugs. Get this, you will not be sorry!

Dosage handbook
My daughter-in-law has given this handbook rave reviews.It is written in comprehensive language and has helped her to understand and be informed of any of the medications my granddaughter is taking or must take.She's been able to receive great feedback from her pediatricians because of this understanding.I heartily recommend it to any parent or caretaker who wants to be conscientious about the medications they give to their children.

Pediatric Dosage Handbook
I needed this book as it is a required text for my pediatric clinical rotation in nursing school.Since it was a required text, I didn't compare it to other pediatric dosage guides.I'm not a big fan of the layout, etc. compared to my Davis Drug guide for adults.It seems harder to follow and a little less consistent with regard to where certain information on each individual drug can be found.Unless it is a required text, I would probably shop around for a better PEDs dosage guide.

Morbidly Obese

The 18th edition of Nelson is horrifically overweight: difficult to handle and unwieldy and the reference ranges are gone. The 17th edition was a much better size.

Please authors/editors- a strict diet is required before any forthcoming editions... a general textbook is not meant to be exhaustive on every subject- there are specialty texts for that. So for goodness sakes, trim the fat next time round !

This book is a must for chiropractors who's practice includes pediatric patients.It is a one stop source for everything I have needed in practice.

One of the best all around references I have found. It gives you the important info you need and cuts out the fluff.

THE Textbook of Pediatrics.
This is THE textbook of pediatrics. I own Rudolphs and Oski's as well. This is the book to buy (or read if you have MDconsult). It has the best diagrams, graphs and is the easiest to read. Don't waste your time with the minibooks such as currents or the mini Nelson book, as most of the information in those books is available for free online on websites such as eMedicine etc... One think i must stress however is that we all need to read the classic core texts. So much emphasis is placed on "Evidence Based Medicine" and advanced diagnostic testing and the latest treatments that we often forget the core pathophysiology of the disease. And that is why core texts like this and Harrison's are still relevant today. We still need our building blocks. ... Read more

Used to prepare for CPN exam
I used this book to prepare for my CPN exam and there were actually questions on the test that were straight from the book.I was hoping it had more questions but I think it has just the perfect amount of questions and review material.I highly suggest this book for anyone taking their CPN or even if you are getting your MSN and are in school.

Comprehensive
This book is truly wonderful!It is set up well and really covers every topic.I've also heard that some of the boards questions came out of this book!A great prep for the pediatric NP boards exam.

Good in terms of review, but not on its own
Almost all testable, high-yield points are highlighted, which is unique to BRS. However, the sections on cardiology and neonatology are probably too brief and simple for clerkship; also, the dermatology section doesn't contain any pictures, which could be quite a problem when a pictorial review is desired. This book is best when combined with blueprints pediatrics, which sort of remedies its shortcomings.

Best peds book I have seen so far, to cover this expansive subject in 600 pages.
I've used multiple pediatrics book either as a main studying source or reference guide, and this book for both causes is invaluable. It's not Nelson or Rudolph but are you going to read those books anyway duringyour peds rotation?comparing to Nelson's essential or other concise books out there like Blueprints or NMS I'd go with this book in a heartbeat. It covers such vast topics in Peds that almost every time I was able to find my answers in it. I wish it's going to be second edition or multiple editions of this book after 2004 edition and some more graphs and charts. Combine it with Harriet lane for tables and charts and other reference numbers you need and you're more than equipped to shine in peds.

Very comprehensive book
This book is very well-written and flows quite smoothly --- there's not so much of the choppy, outline-ish feeling found in other books of the BRS series. Keep in mind that it's 600 pages long, so you'll need to budget your time accordingly. It took me the full 6 weeks of my pediatrics rotation to get through the book. The questions at the end of each chapter (and in the comprehensive exam) are challenging, but they'll prepare you well for the end-of-rotation exam. Highly recommended! ... Read more

Must have for a Residents
I bought this book since it comes highly recommended and I was not dissapointed, excellent quality photographs and detailed explanations and aids to understanding. The new edition has added many more pictures and text increasing the weight of the book.It does not replace a textbook in pediatrics since the management aspects are not gone into great detail but it will defintely serve as an excellent comapanion to one of the comprehensive textbooks in pediatrics.
It also is excellent in preparing for the pediatric boards and the picture questions are very similar to the photos in this book.

Textbook style, not for speedy clinical use
I am a new NP and ordered this book to have a good resource for pediatrics.It is a good textbook but isn't concise enough for everyday clinical use.The pictures were helpful but they were all grouped together so it was hard to find the treatment suggestions. Probably a good reference for complicated cases or for students.Not as handy for the practitioner.I'm exchanging it for the 5 Minute Clinical Consult and Dermatology Deck.

The Bible
This book is regarded as the bible by me and friends of mine who are studying pediatrics with me. It has a little bit of everything and loads of great pictures. I guess my only criticism is that it doesn't go into enough detail on some topics. Very worth having!

Great for board study
I passed boards on my first try and I think this book is totally what helped me.It is a quick review and is organized well.You will need to supplement areas of the book (just because it may not be clear or you may have some holes in your training) with a more comprehensive resource, but this book will reliably get you through all the important knowledge.I took notes and then reviewed my notes before the exam (<2 mos of prep time)and found that it really helped me keep everything together.Yah, some of the mnemonics really are quite silly, but it did lighten my study time and sometimes actually worked.After paying close to 2 grand for boards, don't sell yourself short and at least take a good look at this book.Obviously, the pedialink questions are a must for studying as well.

So far, it keeps my attention.
I'm a second year Internal Medicine and Pediatrics resident who was freaking out about taking the inservice exam on Peds...I ordered this a bit late to be able to use to study, but I'm glad I ordered it anyway!Just skimming through, it'll be nice to have once source I can use to write in margins and do a brief overview of topics.I'm sure I'll have to buy a new version when I'm actually studying for boards, but for now it's an easy read and is definitely informative.

There are short clinical vignettes to help illustrate certain learning points and they try to emphasize the buzz words so that you'll recognize it right away on the test.

May be too soon to have purchased it 3 years prior to taking the boards, but I can see why most of the graduating class used this book for their board review.

Great overview
This was the only book that i used to review for the board exam.
It was easy to read and hit some questions right on.
I would recommend this book for last minute studying that will help you pass the boards.

Not THAT bad....
I'm an '09 pedi residency grad who just took the board exam this past week.Having been pleased with my inservice exam scores, I didn't feel the pressure to sign up for an expensive, intensive review course, nor to spend all my waking hours studying for the exam.That, coupled with the paucity of excellent pedi board review material, led me to use this book in my studying efforts.

Other than the name of one bacterium (Moraxella) and the ideal test for CGD, I found few factual errors.The material was high yield, and several of the bullet points were on my exam.I don't know if Silverstein actually spent time looking at the exam's content specs, but he certainly knew which material had been frequently asked.For example, there are always questions about epiglottitis and rabies, and he nailed what I needed to know.

As for the mnemonics (not just those related to the lungs, as one reviewer seems to imply):None of them were as clever or memorable as the ones in that microbiology book we all still quote, and there were few illustrations to help me lock a picture into my head.The majority seemed forced and awkward.But it's hard to make a good mnemonic for someone else's mind.

So on the whole, it was a good read the week or two before the exam, after I had been through as many PREP questions as I could handle.High yield, not heavy reading.

A few last comments I have to make:
1.Despite lauding a former reader for helping make many changes, it appears that neither said reader, the author, nor anyone in the print-setting process know the appropriate punctuation for a sentence which contains a coordinating conjunction and two independent clauses.
2.As Dr. Silverstein aptly points out, medicine is trying to move away from the term "Reiter's syndrome."Given the history (which he notes), why would an author with such a Semitic surname not be inclined to title the section "reactive arthritis" and give the footnote with the explanation?
3.For the love of God, the comma/period/question mark goes BEFORE the close quotation marks, not after.

Way too many errors...
I bought this book to take my pediatric boards on the recommendation of several of my co-residents.While the book does a good job of outlining the high-yield topics that you will encounter on the boards, the actual information it provides is not reliable.Several times I encountered errata and had to corroborate the information in Nelson's Textbook of Pediatrics.Additionally, there were so many instances of words misspelled that it became very clear to me that this book was not well edited.Apparently some of the mistakes were even present in previous editions of the book.So for me, going through this book, I did not feel confident that I could trust the information being presented.Definitely annotate this book with your own notes if you do buy it. ... The content is accessible and well organized for quick acquisition of knowledge for teaching students, residents and colleagues not to mention for the reader as well. The references are either classic or outdated. A lot of work and time went into the preparation of this book. Are the authors and editors planning to revise and publish a more recent edition?

Superb Resource!

Most comprehensive Pediatric Anesthesia pocket guide!
I believe that this is the most comprehensive, practical, concise pediatric pocket reference. I carry this valuable tool with me everyday of clinical experience. The book has info about all the possible drugs used in pediatric population, weight based dosages down to 250gm premie baby. I do wish that the font was a little larger for a better view. This pediatric pocket is an excellent pocket reference.

Pediatric anesthesia and Emergency Drug Guide
Good info organized by child's age. It would be more convenient to have the two pages per each age placed so they face each other.That way you could leave the book open without flipping back and forth between pages. Also, the pages aren't laminated so you have to be careful about spills since this is the kind of book you bring into the OR with you and leave on top of your anesthesia cart during your pediatric cases.

I received this book promptly but it was boxed with another item I ordered and I failed to open the box. I thought my book would come separately. Pediatric Nursing
This book is great when it comes to the topic of Pediatric nursing.It is easy to read and understand.In addition, it has great test questions at the end of each chapter.On the other hand, the cd-rom that comes with the book is not helpful, in fact, it is confusing.All in all, this book is a blessing and it is worth the money.

Unforgivable errors for a medical book
Alison and Orestes were correct.The text had numerous errors in spelling which plainly show the need for a proofreader who knows medicine.The difference between "symptomatic" and "asymptomatic" is only one letter, but oh, what a difference in meaning!At least one condition is repeatedly misnamed (misspelled) throughout the text.The book is useful for review, but much more so when the reader has prior knowledge and can recognize these mistakes.Given that it's the fourth edition, I would have expected at least an insert of Errata.Given these problems, the book's worth three stars.

However, the accompanying CD, which contains reviews/tests, drags it down. To be fair to the author, this is probably the fault of the publishers.

The program appears to be Windows-95 vintage.That in itself is not a problem.But it simply does not work.If you want to do the review, answering the questions is supposed to give immediate feedback.If you want to take the test, it should provide a total score without the feedback.Unfortunately, it was impossible to find out.For either one, the user is presented with a starting menu: Do you want 10, 25, 50, or All questions, or do you want to specify a different number?The 10/25/50 choices were always grayed out.The All, when selected, immediately proceeded to a summary stating that 0 of 0 questions were answered correctly.The final choice, where the user is prompted for a specific number of questions to be asked, presents a true conundrum:if a positive number is entered, a message pops up:"The number of questions must be equal to or less than 0."If zero is entered, it states "The number of questions must be greater than zero."Taken in sum, these behaviors make the CD absolutely worthless:zero stars.The test cannot be used to confirm or deny the accuracy of the text or the knowledge of the user.The problem would be easily remedied, if I had access to the source code.I sent a query to tech support at the publisher, but have not received an answer, four days after sending it.

Many errors... beware, but may be useful.
I am an instructor in pediatric nursing in an RN program, and I reviewed this book and found dozens of typographical, editorial, and content errors, which were submitted to the publisher.The content errors were few, but the other mistakes in editing show that this book was put together rather poorly and hurriedly.I would NOT recommend reading this in place of class notes or textbook.Doing so will be career suicide.Helpful for those studying for the CPN exam or a final exam for class, but only if you identify the content errors in the book. ...
