This approach also focuses students on nursing care. Features abundant four-color photos and drawings throughout, extensive marginal notes, chapter-opening vignettes and more plus a heavy emphasis on community nursing. 5-0 out of 5 stars Pediatric Nursing: Caring for Children
This book is FANTASTIC! My school doesn't use this book, but I wish it did. I used it more than the recommended text book. Filled with pics, sidebars of info, & detailed explanations. Whenever anyone had a question, they would ask me, "what does THAT book say?". This book was given to me, so I don't know anything about the other manual that the other 2 reviewers are talking about.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I just started my first year of radiology residency (hooray for not being an intern anymore!), and my first rotation is pediatrics. This book was strongly recommended to me by more senior residents in my program. I have not been disappointed. The book is fairly small (about 250 pages), which makes finishing it during the course of a one month rotation a completely doable task. When we do teaching cases with the attending every morning, I feel like I can contribute meaningful differential diagnoses based on what I've read in this book the night before, even as an inexperienced R1. This book is a must-have for radiology residents!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
Awesome, concise book for all your pedi rad needs. The succinctness allows the important points to stick. There are numerous tables comparing and contrasting ddx considerations (ie neuroblastoma vs Wilm's).In a pediatric heavy program like ours this book gave me a huge leg up with minimal effort.

5-0 out of 5 stars so entertaining
o.k., I lied.I know nothing about this book.My husband bought it on my account and insists that he'll never write anything about it b/c what resident physician does?I think he likes it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book to read
I like the book. I bought it because I did not have the older edition. The new edition contains the same knowledge that the older edition had - plus some new sections. However, it is still a thin book and easy to read. The illustrations are much more better including more CTs and MRIs. The images of X-rays has still not been improved and in medium quality. It is a classic and if you dont have the older edition, you should definitely buy it; if you already have the older version, you should wait until its price drops more. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good content
The content in the book is a great review. My only complaint is the layout of some of the review sections. ie: instead of listing all of the developmental milestones for a 2 yr old it organizes it by types of development.....so it will list all of the fine motor development for every age then go and list all of the gross motor for every age. It kinda jumps around with points. Overall a good review though.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent Review Book
I bought this book to review for the certification exam and to help me with my studying during the last 2 semesters of my program. It is pretty good. The pages are thick enough that they can handle being highlighted without bleeding though too much to the other side (very important for study materials!). The information in each section is decent, and there are several questions. However, there are no explanations/rationale for the answers, so that's a missed opportunity for learning. There is minimal information on pharmacology, but I'm trusting them that it has what we need to know. It's not what you'd want to use to study for a pharmacology exam, though. Overall, I'm glad I got it, but it certainly won't be the only study guide I use! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good info but not much help with problems
I got this book while I was expecting my first child and it has plenty of useful information in it. It mostly seems geared toward making a case for breastfeeding, which I already was planning to do, so I found it a little overly enthusiastic. It is a very good intro to breastfeeding and the benefits but what I found, as soon as I had my baby, was that it really was no help for breastfeeding problems outside of the very most common issues. If someone was looking to this book and breastfeeding was offering challenges this book would make a new mom feel like a failure and that she must not be someone who could do it. I needed more help and ended up getting that from the La Leche League website and from a lactation consultant. I give it four stars because I think it unwittingly could discourage a new mom who is trying but lacks the support of a good social network that she can do it even if getting started is challenging. I also think that trying to convince breastfeeding past the first year is rather unrealistic and would not appeal to many people.

4-0 out of 5 stars Breastfeeding book
This book is small enough to fit in a pocket of the diaper bag for easy reference. It has a lot of information in it and a great read for expecting and new moms.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great purchase
I took a breastfeeding class and it was recommended to follow up with a good book. This book was on a list provided by the pediatrician I chose for my baby. So I ordered it and am almost finished reading it. It gives lots of helpful tips.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this book!
A friend gave me this book, took me a while to open it but after I did, I had to BF, I have loaned this book out many times to many friends.I work full time and been BF my son for 12m, BF daughter for 11m, I also recommend this book to friends/family who are expecting and refer back to it time and time again.Book has all sorts of answers to questions and education on the subject.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible Book
I bought this book before my first daughter was born. My milk supply was low with her and I went through hell trying to get my milk supply up (pumping, SNS, meds, lactation consultants...everything) but had to supplement her through the entire 9 months of breastfeeding when she weaned herself. I felt so inadequate and like a total failure as a mother. Since then I've met SO many women with a similar problems. Anyway, I pulled this book out again last night since I am starting to have similar supply problems with my 2nd, 3 month old daughter. What an awful book. The book does not address supply problems at all except for a couple of cursory comments and offers no real advice on the subject. It appears that the whole point of the book is to push breastfeeding propaganda through fear while purposely ignoring real problems to make breastfeeding seem easy. If you're a new mom, DO NOT GET THIS BOOK. If you do have problems, this book will only make you feel like you are going to make your children unhealthy and stupid if you can't breastfeed through puberty. A much, much more useful book is "The Nursing Mother's Companion". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I'm using this to study for Peds during and after my rotation. It's a great book with lots of information for each important topic. I want my residency in Peds and I hope to keep this book around for a long time!

5-0 out of 5 stars great pediatrics book
I thought this was one of the most complete pediatrics books out there. I had my pediatrics rotation before internal medicine, so I wanted a book that had complete information, especially about critical care management, etc. I used Blueprints and Case Files and thought this NMS book was the most helpful for the shelf. I used the new 2009 version.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pediatrics (NMSIS)
The format is helpful. It contains pertinent information, that is well orgainized. The questions and answers with explanations puts you in the test taking mode and gives detailed content for the answers. This edition sorely needs to be updated. 2000 edition.Additional sources should be used to prepare for an exam.Do not rely on this source alone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Time consuming but excellent
This book is more in depth than blueprints pediatrics. A lot more pages to go through so you have to be disciplined. The best part is they start from step one and explain concepts. Versus blueprints which seems to assume you already know the concepts and they point out the more important details to know for Step 2. The neonatology and cardiology sections were great, so I read them instead of the corresponding sections in blueprints. I think there are a lot of wonderful sections to read to get a good foundation on pathophysiology. Some NMS books (like NMS Medicine) have come out with the 5th edition 2004 - which has a nicer layout, larger book size, easier on the eyes, and some nice algorithms & tables. You might want to wait for the 5th edition of Pediatrics. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book
This book had an excellent amount of depth when considering multiple topics. There was much more information than other review books, and the format of presentation is light as a Q&A format. Ordered this product to be able to study with my book, and what I receive was not what I ordered so needilessly I am very upset and disappointed. This is my first time after three years of ordering through amozon that I received something completely wrong. Would like my money back but I doubt that this will be honored. 3-0 out of 5 stars its ok but lacks answer key
the book is a really good "test bank" to get you ready for a test but does not have an answer key...all it has are page numbers of where to find the answer (which have not always been 100% correct) not worth the money I spent on it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Textbook Review
Upon receipt of my book I was a little surprised that it was a paperback.Usually when i order a textbook from Amazon, they are normally hardback books. However, this I know has nothing to do with Amazon.com, but has everything to do with the publisher of the book.Otherwise, I was please with my book and the speed at this I received it.As a matter of fact, I order all of my textbooks from Amazon because of their wonderful service.

Study guide is somewhat helpful in the fact that, like any other work book, it helps jog your memory. However, the answers are not located in the back of the book. Page numbers are listed next to each question, so you have to go back through the text book to reread the page. That's fine, but not in a pinch.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I was looking for
I dont really consider this book a study guide, its more of a workbook. This book does not provide an answer key, but page numbers where the answers can be found in the actual lecture book. So if youre looking for a quick review book like i was, this isnt for you! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good!
This book covers all the aspects you need to understand..simple, detailed, exactly what I wanted

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the $$
I bought this book to study for my Pediatric CCRN exam. It came highly recommended from people i work with, so i bought it. Not worth the money! I had a hard time finding information i was looking for and found the book way to long winded. Hardly even used it. even the questions in the back are nothing like the exam. Do not buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for Pediatric Critical Care RN's
This book is packed with information for pediatric critical care RN's. I'm using it to study for my CCRN and will continue to use it on a daily basis at work. I feel that any nurse in the pediatric field could use this book as a reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book for serious Pediatric ICU Nurses
I was lucky to get this book at a used-and-reduced price; however, that doesn't change the fact that the book is outstanding in it's content. I own Hazinski's pediatric ICU "bible", but this book is SO much more detailed. If you want to learn peds cardiology...REALLY learn not only the congenital malformations but the surgery for each malformation with detailed diagrams in a step-by-step process, then this is the book for you. Each section starts with detailed embryology and expands your knowledge base from there. Most of the PICU nurses I work with have grabbed this book out of my nursing bag to use as a reference many times in the month I've owned it. They are all planning to buy it in the near future. This is a great book even if you don't plan to take the AACN certification exam for RNC. I highly recommend it! ... Read more

Product Description

In the recent literature, the most influential case study books in neuropsychology are in the adult realm. Pediatric neuropsychology is a rapidly developing field with increasingly greater influence in the assessment, diagnosis, early identification, and treatment of childhood illnesses. This book will provide the first centralized, comprehensive resource for case studies in pediatric neuropsychology. Not only will this supply a valuable compilation for the growing numbers of professionals in this field, but will also serve as an innovative and appealing resource for therapists, teachers, and others interested in child development.

This book will be structured in such a way that readers can easily access individual cases of interest, as well as related areas of dysfunction. Section breakdowns will be provided in order to highlight the combined focus of case presentations in acquired neuropsychological dysfunction as well as developmental disorders. Each section will begin with an introductory chapter, highlighting the salient feature of the concept and providing brief, up to date reviews of the current research and theories. Within each global section, individual case studies will serve as stand-alone chapters. Contributing authors will be provided extensive guidance and coaching with regards to the standard format and information to be included in each chapter.

The first section of this book will present cases involving neurological disorders. The intention of this section is to provide not only “classic” examples of neurological dysfunction in children, but also to provide interesting cases of unique or remarkable presentations. The second section will present an accumulation of cases representing both common and progressive conceptualizations of developmental disabilities. Section three has been designed to highlight cases which often present complex issues to neuropsychologists. The case examples in this section will highlight the use of alternative treatments, pathologies that are often a source of inquiry, and situations that lack the more rigorous scientific data often utilized in other diagnostic procedures. Additionally, this section may include chapters on common differential diagnosis dilemmas in clinical practice. Often multifaceted and even contradictory evidence can arise during evaluations, resulting in complex or problematic situations for the clinician. Such examples are difficult, by their nature, to forecast, but rather would be added during the book’s development, as they occur.

1-0 out of 5 stars Rating for seller, not the book
My book does not come with CD and quick reference guide.Had I known, I should have ordered from the official publisher.

1-0 out of 5 stars No CD-ROM
The book was in great shape like it said on the site, but NO CD-ROM or reference cards, which are essential to this course. There was never an indication that these items would not be included. I'm very disappointed :(

3-0 out of 5 stars Students Beware! Buy at your own risk.
Three stars.Five stars for a great book on Pediatric Advanced Life Support.Negative Two stars for a Missing CD-ROM!!!!Especially when it is required for a course you are taking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent course.Official AHA book with CD ROM
Great course and materials.Be sure you get the cards and CD, as were included with this book. They are essential. If you plan to renew your PALS on line you NEED this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars buyer beware
Pediatric Advanced Life Support: Provider Manual

I find myself wondering how any large book store can not have enough of these textbooks on hand. These are the mandatory books that most hospitals demand! If you are a health care provider (which endorses a huge population of medical care givers,)the necessity of this book as THE primary study guideto pass and obtain your certification so you are allowed to work in the department you are in is of paramount importance. It amazes me that the most well know on line book seller finds itself without the current editions, forcing people to choose used copies and risk buying an outdated book.By outdated, I mean that the guidelines have significantly changed in the past year or so and this is very importantfor the buyer to understand.

Many times have I have experienced purchasing into a class and having the book sent to me very late, so I basically had very little time to study from the mandatory manual. This is true of many other mandatory classes as well. Unfortunately, the book was automatically charged in with the class. So, if a friend offered you their recent copy, in some facilities the opting out of a book purchase was not allowed.

I was surprised to see that the new updated version of ACLS AND PALS was very difficult to identify.I found a class that did not demand the purchase of the book when registering, but offered alternatives of library copies and any other resource that allowed you to obtain the most current book.I found it difficult to verify the demanded copy for the class, and again, rolled back around to my dismay that a proper supply of these kind of manuals were not appropriately available on amazon.com.Aw, well, consider it just another necessity of my profession.More and more certificates are being required to prove we are skilled and meetquality assurance guidelines.Apparantly, eacy specialty is asking for more...this in a time of severe medical providing shortage.I ask Amazon to try and pay more attention to these demanded classes requested of all ranges of hospital employees and insure these books be available year round. Many of us would be very appreciative. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Adequate but could be much better
I purchased this book last semester for the fall semester for my Respiratory therapy class. I liked many things about it, it is straight forward and easy to understand, the reviews work wonders and it has a great flow to the information. The bad parts are the glossary has not nearly as many needed terms defined. The answers for the chapter reviews are non existent, and the book is riddled with spelling errors, I would have also like color photographs and better diagrams in some areas. I would recommend this book if you have no alternative, it gets the job done but if there is a newer addition or alternative I would say get that one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Happy with choice
I had never ordered online before. It was quick and easy. I have learned a lot from this book. I'm happy I found it online for less money.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poorly organized, and far too many typos
Unfortunately, this is one of the few books on the subject of neonatal respiratory care. I found the book to be cumbersome and poorly organized. The book offers conflicting information on several topics, and there are far too many typos. It is also frustrating that the answers to post-chapter questions are not available. The book does contain a lot of information, but good luck finding it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Resp Care
The book has some good information in it. The only down side of the book is it does not have an answer key for review question and a workbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good deal.
I bought this book because it was required for a class I was taking, it was very specific and yet easy to understand.I would recommend this book to anyone who has the need to better understand the proper care of neonates.I was also surprised how cheaply I was able to purchase this book on Amazon. It was far more expensive on other sites and at the college book store. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Reads like a textbook
I really TRIED to go through this book...and I just couldn't!Reads like a textbook; too boring; lacks any special study tips or memory techniques.I ended up borrowing the "Laughing Your Way" review book from another physician - and it was great!Everything was nicely laid out (bullet format); actually gives you a lot of tips for the exam & ways to remember specific facts. Not sure I passed yet (just took the exam yesterday), but would definitely recommend "Laughing Your Way" over Cleveland clinic.[also, MUST do some PREP questions from AAP - helped a lot].Having just taken the exam, then flipping through the Cleveland Clinic book (to see if it would have helped me at all), I have to say it would have been a waste of my time to go through the book.Laughing Your Way reviews/covers more material than Cleveland clinic, and the info in the Cleveland Clinic review book did not seem relevant! So much for the 'intensive review'.Anyways, hope this helps.

2-0 out of 5 stars not for board study
Really not a very helpful book for board study. Many of the sections have major holes in terms of knowledge, including topics in the content specs. The questions at the end of the sections are minimally helpful.Honestly, I thought it was a waste of money. If I wasn't so stressed out, I wouldn't have bought it at all.I gave it away.Don't think it is useful for board prep and it certainly isn't useful for general knowledge.

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent
It is an excellent book.
help me to focus on certain points needed in exam.
Simple way to study without feeling that you are sinking in alot of un needed informations especially when there is NO time.

3-0 out of 5 stars Identity crisis
I am a recent pedi resident graduate who is preparing for the 2009 board exam. This book came highly recommended from several colleagues. However, I have been underwhelmed with its usefulness as a board preparation source.

Most of the chapters are well researched and written. Some are repetitive and poorly proofread. But my biggest complaint is that no one seems to have read the content specifications that the board publishes. If you are going to thumb through this book in the bookstore, go to page 62 and read about Foreign Bodies and Caustic Ingestions.Rather than having board-germane content, it reads more like a review article, enumerating who reported what, in which journal, which year, how many patients....all a bunch of irrelevant nonsense for me in my limited time.

If you have the board specifications in your lap at home (it previously came as a separate booklet with the PREP study questions), go to p 123 and read about adrenal disorders.Again, this section is replete with information, but probably not stuff that I need now.

On the whole, this book has an identitiy crisis. It is trying to both be a prosiac form of board review and a general pediatrics text at the same time.I already have the general text on my bookshelf.I wanted to buy the board review book.

Lastly, as other reviewers have pointed out, maybe they focused so intently on being an "Intensive Review" that some of the relevant content (e.g. type 1 DM) got left on the editing room floor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent review book
I purchased 6 different review books, and this was hands-down my favorite. It is very clearly written, and it provides a bit of background/pathophys to help things make sense but then focuses on what is most important to know.It is true that it is not complete (and I can't help thinking that the ideal peds board review book has yet to be written), but no review book will be--there is enough info in here, and it is sufficiently focused on what is important for the Boards, that if you learn what's here then you should be in good shape. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Dr Ogre
This is a good book, easy to read, and full of useful information, if somewhat light on treatment

5-0 out of 5 stars Well-Organized
I just love medical texts that take the "Signs and Symptoms Approach." That's how real medicine works. This book is no exception--while not a comprehensive reference by any means, it is very helpful in diagnosing childhood neurological conditions. That's why I recommend it for office use. For something more comprehensive, check MD Consult online or visit your nearest medical library. For something truly useful for your office, buy this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars good for review ; handy for quick clinical reference
The format (signs & symptoms approach) of this text should be helpful for those who need to know where to start with a case. Text is brief and to the point. The long ddx lists would be great, except that they are in alphabetical order, rather than listing by frequency of occurrence or some similar relevant quality. It is the only decent, recently published pediatric neurology text of its size that I'm aware of, so is a good choice for those needing a quick review. With improved proofreading/editing, I would rate it more highly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for residents
This is a very good book. The signs and symptoms approach makes this book quite easy to read. No, it is not a comprehensive text of child neurology. But, yes, it is an extremely valuable resource for residents rotating through child neuro.
